Because of this, dowry is used as a means to gain a higher socioeconomic status. As status is continually gained, the demand for bridal dowry increases in order to keep moving up the social ladder. Get A Life is a Living reality television show hosted by Jodie Marsh, which premiered 1 March 2007. The show consisted of five shy, nervous, unconfident and low self-esteemed participants who want to change their personalities for the better. Each of the five participants is assigned a mentor—someone he or she aspired to be like, at the top of their social ladder, confident, with a positive outlook on life. The mentors' job is to motivate their protégés throughout the show, giving them words of wisdom and encouragement.

In the first part of the 18th century, the art of the fukusa reflected the taste of the aristocratic minority of Japan: the daimyō and samurai. This theoretical perspective centres on the interconnections among the state, nation and citizenship. Accordingly, bilingual elite groups try to take control of the opportunities for mediation between the monolingual group and the state. Subsequently, they use the official language to dominate the sectors of government and administration and the higher levels of employment. It assumes that both the established and outsider groups are able to communicate in a shared vernacular, but the latter groups lack the literacy skills that could allow them to learn the written form of the central or supercentral language, which would, in turn allow, them to move up the social ladder.
A study of the Ugandan context shows great disparity between the rich elite and the average Ugandan who struggles to make ends meet. The Huffman Historic District is a historic neighborhood in eastern Dayton, Ohio, United States. Formed at the end of the nineteenth century primarily by a wealthy businessman, it has long been home to people of many different occupations and numerous places on the social ladder. After seeing very few changes throughout the twentieth century, it was named a historic site in the 1980s. William P. Huffman was both a banker and a real estate developer; although some of the land in the neighborhood had already been developed before Huffman became involved, he spurred development by arranging for the construction of a street railway on Third Street.
