Carter goes to the restaurant alone and sees a surveillance video of Juntao carrying Soo Yung into a van. Lee arrives and saves Carter from Juntao's syndicate, but they are taken off the case after the FBI blames them for ruining the ransom drop, with Lee sent back to Hong Kong. But Carter refuses to give up; he appeals to Johnson for assistance and sneaks on board Lee's plane, persuading him to help finish the case and stop Juntao.

Thorfinn sneaks on his father's ship despite his orders to remain home, and the ship is eventually lured into a trap at the Faroe Islands and ambushed by a band of mercenaries led by Askeladd, with whom Floki had conspired to kill Thors. With his great strength and skill, Thors at first fights off the attackers even without using deadly force, but submits to execution after Thorfinn is taken hostage. After his father's death, Thorfinn joins Askeladd's crew in order to avenge his father and constantly challenges his commander to various duels. By 1013, Askeladd's company find employment as mercenaries in the Danish invasion of London under Thorkell the Tall.

Tony than eats a Gallsaberry raw and finds out that it is from outer space.Chew #8 Tony sneaks on the base where Gallsaberries are grown, evacuates several people that are imprisoned there only to find out that the entire crop of Gallsaberries are burning.Chew #9 It turns out that Ray Jack Montero is burning the plants to remove any competition, with a little help from some residents of Yamapalu, who are rebelling due to the capture of Poyo. Tony is shot at by an employee of Montero, but is missed, and has a confrontation with a person known as The Vampire who is also a cibopath.Chew #10 Tony finds out that Poyo had been moved to America, so he retrieves him and shuts down a cockfighting ring.

Pursued by Daulat Khan and Tor Gul's henchmen, and knowing that she is highly conspicuous as an unaccompanied woman on a mountain road, Allah Rakhi sneaks on board a truck.

Kalam meets Salk Elan to learn that the Ragstopper and the whole Aren fleet has been impounded and Admiral Nok arrested by Pormqual, who plans to flee by sea. Minala sneaks on board a trader following the Ragstopper, which Pormqual puts in the charge of his treasurer.

'Skunk' is first seen in Saint-Tropez guarding the Grimaldi twins' yacht, the Quicksilver, and is distracted from his position at the gangway when Alex self-destructs his laptop computer and sneaks on board. When Stallone accidentally detonates Alex's gas bomb, 'Skunk' suffers from having his clothes ignite, as well as having one of his eyes swelling shut and his lips swelling so that he cannot talk properly. When Frankie Stallone tries to kill Alex at Needle Point, 'Skunk' is ordered to film it, but Alex fights with Stallone, causing the filming to go awry, such as 'Skunk' missing the scene where Alex is thrown off the cliff, much to his dismay, but getting the scene where Alex stabs Stallone in the neck with a nail. 'Skunk' reappears at the Grimaldi twins' disused former coke plant in Wales, seen only towards the end of the novel, where he is put to work fuelling the engine of the twins' train, The Midnight Flyer, as it tries to pursue the coach when Alex and Jack rescue the fifty-two hostages and try to get them out.
