It also performs well made into a thick-but-not-sludgy curry soup with thin pink slices of washugyu beef; a shaggy, mossy, salty-sour mass of ume and kombu; and a soup of shaved beef and onions that tastes like a deeper, stronger version of French dip jus and is blitzed by a little grated yuzu peel at the end.

As the years progressed, they found a way to sneak in a lengthy slab of sludgy metal that could be bold (starting out 2006's If Thine Enemy Hunger album with the eight-minute opus "She Tides the Deep") or proggy (the stretched-out drum solo at the end of "The Mountain" that's rhythmic indulgence on a half-speed Iron Butterfly "In A Gadda Da Vida" scale).

And in seasonal countries, these are all things we gravitate towards when the sun is shining, when the world looks brighter, and our lives feel easier, pumped up on all that extra vitamin D. But also, rules are there to be broken, and if you feel most comfortable listening to some sludgy industrial goth shit with the curtains closed at the height of July, then you do you.

Boston garage duo Vundabar have been lowkey turning out some of the best sludgy pop around since 2012, earning a devoted following (a recent sold-out show at NYC's Union Pool was so packed, we had to sneak in high school-style), and are finally gearing up to become one of your favorite new discoveries with a tour this November and the forthcoming Smell Smoke early next year.

Some of the masks I find myself returning to are Biologique Recherche Masque Vivant, which is identical in both yeasty smell and brown sludgy appearance to Vegemite but leaves my skin glowing; Glossier Mega Greens Galaxy Pack with cress sprout extract, which I like to think is a good alternative to imbibing green juice; and Omorovicza Ultramoor Mud Mask, which goes on vividly blue and conquers my oily T-zone.
