Some years later, after a stage accident left a leg permanently damaged, he reinvented himself as a sleight of hand artist with a flair for humor and a thick Low Dutch-accented patter, with which he accompanied his performances. Capitalising on Hustle's international success, the BBC created a spin off series, The Real Hustle, which premiered on 10 February 2006. The documentary follows three genuine hustlers – a magician and professional gambler, a glamorous actress, and a professional sleight-of-hand artist and crooked gambling consultant – as they pull short-cons on unsuspecting businesses and members of the public. Vernon later taught him how to cut silhouettes and they both worked together cutting silhouettes at the Toronto Exhibition in 1919 and at a booth in New York City in the 1920s.

Ryan also made a January 11, 2013 appearance on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno by swinging a 15-pound ham from an inserted meat hook through his nose and out his mouth, to the amusement of NBC's Al Roker during a "Meal or No Meal" sketch in which a panel of celebrity judges agree to give 3 invited people a free meal at a local restaurant in exchange for a quirky body stunt sketch they can do.
