In Australia, the term swag is still widely used to refer to a tent or other portable shelter used for camping or outdoor sleeping. Karmann Coachbuilt was a brand of recreational vehicle or camper manufactured by German company Karmann. In 1975 Wilhelm Karmann visited South Africa, where he saw the Transporter gen 2 based Jürgens. He forged an agreement with Jürgens to make campers in Europe based on the same design. The first campers were based on the Volkswagen Type 2, with no over-cab sleeping compartment. In 1979 Volkswagen introduced the third generation of Transporter, the T3/T25/Vanagon.

The capacious pressurized cabin (with a near-circular fuselage section with 4.7 m/ 15 ft width and height) was intended for a three tier sleeping compartment configuration which ultimately was not fitted to any of the S.E.2010 versions. The fuselage was left with a good deal of unusable space with only open luggage shelves mounted in the upper fuselage.Stroud 1993, p. 60.

Warren Freer became an Auckland Labour member of parliament in 1947, and recalled the Friday night comradeship in a sleeping compartment of the train to Auckland after a week in Parliament, when a bottle of whisky would be produced and incidents in the house or caucus recalled. Freer and Charles Petrie lived near the Otahuhu Station, and Petrie arranged via a sympathetic guard for the driver to slow the train after Middlemore Station so that they could save time by alighting there; the younger Freer first so Petrie could pass their bags to him and then alight; the train then speeded up towards Auckland. In 1949 air travel to Wellington was introduced for backbench MPs.

The LNER introduced a Touring Camping Coach in 1935, this service enabled campers to undertake a week-long tour of the Yorkshire Dales from York. The coach was moved from place to place in the evenings by attaching it to scheduled passenger services, initially the coach visited , , , and , the route was later simplified and only went to Pateley Bridge, Aysgarth and Glaisdale. The vehicle was a conversion of a bogie carriage from 1905 and had a living/dining room with kitchenette and six one-person sleeping compartments, a toilet and a seventh compartment could be used as a bathroom, store or an extra sleeping compartment utilising a collapsible camp bed. As with the static camping coaches campers were expected to provide their own provisions.
