There's something blank-slatey about it, for the general population, and I find that fascinating.

Gladysdale Post Office opened on 17 July 1914 and closed in 1978. Originally called "Slatey creek" but was renamed as mail kept going to Slatey Creek up near St Arnard Vic. It was Renamed after Gladys Petitt, the daughter of the post mistress at the time. The post office was first run by the Victorian Hardwood company, who had the contract for the mail along the tramway at the time.

The fingers and toes were without any webbing. The skin was perfectly smooth (i.e., without any spinosities) but with rugose folds. Colouration was very similar to Hoplophryne rogersi, which is slatey-blue above, shading to blue-grey peripherally.

Rich Mountain salamanders grow to a length of about , snout to vent. They are mottled and slatey-grey in colour which makes them inconspicuous. There are glands on their backs which secrete a noxious substance to deter predators.

The rocks in Taylor are from the late middle Silurian period. Hawkins volcanics green grey dacite and quartz andesite are in the west. The Canberra Formation is separated by a fault in the east side. It consists of slatey shale and mudstone, with north east trending bands of acid volcanics (dacite and andesite).

Bonner as seen when under development Rocks in Bonner are from the late middle Silurian period and are called Canberra Formation. They are mostly slatey shale and mudstone. A band of dacite follows a ridge in the north east direction in the western third. Also ashstone occurs on a hill top in the north west corner of Bonner.

The flame-crested tanager grows to a length of about and a weight of around . The male has a black head, small orangeish-red bib and a moderate-sized orangish crest. The upper parts are slatey-black with a golden-buff rump, and the upper wing-coverts bear a large patch of white. The underparts are dark brownish-black.

The sides of the head, throat and underparts are slatey-grey. The legs are dark grey, the bill is blackish, the iris brown and the bare area around the eyes red. The length range is about . Juveniles are similar in colouring but have reddish bills, more speckled upper parts and grey underparts flushed with rust and speckled with white.

The adult E. melanoleuca is a small, dark grey, moth with short, broad wings giving it a triangular outline. The male has a whitish margin to both pairs of wings, while the female has slatey-grey forewings and dark grey hindwings. The wingspan is in females, and slightly less in males. The antennae are bipectinate (have comb-like lateral processes on both sides).

The iris is brown. Around and behind the eye is a slatey-grey patch, the rest of the head being white. The upper-parts and underparts are light bluish-grey, apart from the axilliaries, rump and tail-coverts, which are white. The wings are long, slender and pointed, sometimes with a little black on the wing-tips, and the tail is deeply forked.

Fülleborn's boubou is a medium-sized boubou, growing to a length of . The sexes are similar and the adult plumage is a bluish slate-grey with a blacker head, wings and tail, all of which are slightly glossed. The underparts are dark slatey-grey and the underwing is dark brown. The eye is brown or reddish- brown and the beak and legs are black.

Foliation is common in rocks affected by the regional metamorphic compression typical of areas of mountain belt formation (orogenic belts). More technically, foliation is any penetrative planar fabric present in metamorphic rocks. Rocks exhibiting foliation include the standard sequence formed by the prograde metamorphism of mudrocks; slate, phyllite, schist and gneiss. The slatey cleavage typical of slate is due to the preferred orientation of microscopic phyllosilicate crystals.

The black cuckoo is a medium-sized cuckoo. The sexes are similar, the plumage varying by subspecies; Cuculus clamosus clamosus has upper parts black glossed with green, slatey-grey wings and black tail tipped with white and sometimes with the outer feathers barred or spotted with white or buff; Cuculus clamosus gabonensis is mostly black with a red throat and black and white barring on the belly.

Helvella lacunosa has an irregularly folded or wrinkled cap which may be shades of slatey grey to black in colour, and measure anywhere from , though usually between . The wrinkled ringless high stem is chambered within, and may be white when young and darker with age, though may be any shade of grey. The spore print is white, the oval spores average (12) 15-21 x (9) 11-14 μm. Occasionally white capped forms are found.

Millais sought to create the correct effects of light and smoke by using a sheet of coloured glass and by burning planks of wood. This emphasis on fleeting effects of colour and light was a new departure in his art. The painting is also notable for its startling transitions of colour, particularly the dramatic effect by which the sleeve of the mother's nightgown changes from slatey blue to pale pink. This led to much critical comment at the time.

The region includes the Saar and Ruwer river tributaries and is centered on the city of Trier. The Middle Mosel or Mittelmosel is the main wine growing region and includes the villages of Bernkastel and Piesport. The Middle Mosel begins at the village of Zell and extends south to just north of the village of Schweich. The slate-based soil here is said to have one of the most recognizable terroir with the wines, especially Riesling, displaying slatey mineral notes.

It contains shale, siltstone and sandstone, which were deposited in a flat environment of the sea that covered the Archean surface. It is thick, with an average of . The 1,900- to 1,850-million-year- old Biwabik Iron Formation is a narrow belt of iron-rich strata that extends east-northeast for ; its thickness varies from , its average may be . It has four primary subdivisions: the Lower Cherty (which was deposited upon the Pokegama Quartzite), the Lower Slatey, the Upper Cherty and the Upper Slaty (which the Virginia Formation rests upon).

Twentieth century beer writer Michael Jackson wrote of Thisted's Limfjords Porter: :"It was full of character: a dense, brownish, head over a slatey, black, brew; full-bodied and lightly oily; a touch of burnt-grass, rooty, peatiness; a long, warming, finish; and an alcohol content of 7.9. The flavours were very complex, and I was not surprised to hear that both smoked malt and licorice were used." In the breeding season, the male has the crown, most of the neck, the back and under-wing coverts a yellowish-green colour with dull yellow spots in the shoulder region. The cheeks are also yellow with a narrow black line extending from the beak, through the eye to the nape of the neck. The irises are brown and the beak is slatey grey. There is a black patch on the throat immediately below the beak and below this, there is a broad, reddish-brown band round the breast, bordered by a thin black stripe above and below the band.

The history of the English Grey begins in 1933, when Mr T Watson of Bedford, England, discovered and purchased a hen of a slatey grey colour from a dealer. This may or may not have been an English Grey, as Mr Watson failed to establish the strain, but his report in 1935 of the bird's existence prompted both Mr E W Brooks of Mitcham, Surrey to report his breeding of Greys from two Cobalts in 1934, and Mrs S Harrison of Australia to report her breeding of Greys in the same year. Mrs Harrison's birds, of course, led to the foundation of today's Dominant Grey variety. In 1933 Mr Brooks purchased a pair of Cobalts from a dealer and paired them together for five seasons between 1934 and 1938, producing at least 25 Greys, giving full details of all his breeding records in the Budgerigar Bulletin up to the issue in September 1938, but after that no further mention of them is made.
