Although safety has always been the main concern when shooting, with everything done by the book, recent years have seen the introduction of a wider range of training courses for staff involved in shooting to improve quality and safety even further. There are many competitions, from postal smallbore competitions to the yearly Cadet-Inter-Service-Skill-at-Arms meet (CISSAM or commonly pronounced "siss-amm")and the annual Inter-Service-Cadet-Rifle-Meet (ISCRM or commonly pronounced "iss-crum") at Bisley, the home of UK shooting. There are currently four types of marksman award that a cadet can achieve, ranging from "Trained Shot", through "Marksman" and "Advanced Marksman", up to "Competition Marksman".

Salt of the Earth, however, was heavily suppressed during and after production by anti-communists in Hollywood and Washington. In October 1952, the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee (SISS) called on Clinton Jencks to testify in its hearings on communism in Mine-Mill, and on April 23, 1953, during the furor over the production of Salt of the Earth, federal agents arrested him on charges of falsifying a noncommunist affidavit he had signed in 1950. He went to trial in federal court in January 1954 and was convicted, largely on the testimony of Harvey Matusow, a paid informant for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Matusow later recanted his story, and while his recantation failed to help Jencks win on appeal, by the time Jencks's case was heard by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1957 the entire system of paid informants had been discredited.

Donghi was identified as a leader of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and a member of Weatherman by the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee (SISS) investigative report.U.S. Senate Subcommittee 65 She was affiliated with the Columbia University SDS chapter as well as the New York chapter.FBI Surveillance Files 274 During July 1969, Donghi was one of the SDS Weatherwomen who traveled with Bernardine Dohrn to Havana, Cuba to meet and talk with representatives of Cuba, National Liberation Front of South Vietnam (NLF) and the North Vietnamese governments.FBI Surveillance Files 97, 107U.S. Senate Subcommittee 13, 22, 65 Donghi spoke at a press conference held on August 19, 1969 at the New York City Diplomat Hotel after the group returned home from Cuba.FBI Surveillance Files 107 She also spoke at a National Action Conference held in Cleveland, Ohio during August 29-September 2, 1969.

Feller's appointment as chief legal counsel had upset the communist press: > Pravda, in an article published Feb, 21, 1951, said that Mr. Feller decided > all matters in the legal department and that Mr. Feller and Andrew W. > Cordier, Mr. Lie's executive assistant, were "agents of the American State > Department" and "American stooges" who "plan in the machinery of the > Secretariat various behind-the-scene actions connected with the American > aggression in Korea." TIME magazine also reported that Feller was under no suspicion himself–and that the US hearings had "uncovered 17 among the 2,000 Americans on the UN staff who refused to say whether or not they have engaged in subversive activities." However, according to Feller's grand-nephew, he had received a subpoena from Roy Cohn to appear before the SISS. Weeks before his death, he had become acting Assistant Secretary General of the UN.
