Barely Real is the 1992 extended play (EP) by the American indie rock band Codeine. After releasing their previous album Frigid Stars LP in 1990, the group accepted an invitation from the quartet Bastro to tour in Europe in 1991. Following the tour the group was invited to record a single for Sub Pop Singles Club and attempted to record their follow-up album The White Birch in 1992. The recording sessions proved to be disastrous for the group since it found themselves often with unusable tracks over several different studios.

The recording was released in December 2000 as part of the Sub Pop Singles Club in a limited edition pressing of 1,300 copies on half-red, half-white vinyl.
Rachel Carns circa 1999 Before their next album, The Need began branching out into other projects. With singer Nomy Lamm, the duo formed a highly theatrical surf punk drag king band called The Teenage Ho-Dads. They also created a collaborative project where Carns and Sloan, with a rotating cast of players, acted as a karaoke band for guest singers; including Lamm, Tamala Poljak (Longstocking), Audrey Marrs, Tracy Sawyer (Heavens to Betsy) and Slim Moon. The Need released these recordings as Karaneedoke, which would be part of Kill Rock Stars' Mailorder Freak Singles Club.
A 5-song EP of tracks recorded with Albini during the On Top sessions was released in 2003 on Tiger Style as the Jersey Girls EP. The band also contributed covers of AC/DC's "Whole Lotta Rosie" and Grand Funk Railroad's "Got This Thing On The Move" for a contribution to Sub Pop Records' Singles Club series. The critical success of On Top caught the attention of several major labels, and Rye Coalition was offered the opportunity to sign a major record contract for the release of their next album. Bryk moved to Durham, NC in 2003 with his life partner Erin McGinn, settling in neighbouring Raleigh. Immigration issues and further label wrangling (Bryk was dropped by Scratchie in 2004 after the latter's acquisition by New Line Records) kept him from touring or releasing new material until 2006, when Florida indie label Pop-Up Records released the tracks "We Don't Care" and "BecaRebecca" as part of their ongoing Singles Club. Bryk's third full-length CD Dan Bryk Christmas Record was released by the Urban Myth Recording Collective in November 2006. Christmas Record received enthusiastic reviews (including a 4-star review from indie tastemaker Pitchfork) and regional college radio airplay.
The EP garnered a good amount of positive press and put the band onto stage with an array of artists from Sloan to AWOLNATION to Kaiser Chiefs. By the fall of 2011 the band had added Christian Turner on guitar in order to become a five piece. They began work on their next self- produced EP, “Be On My Side,” which was released on March 2, 2012 and was mixed by Dan Weston (Attack in Black, Shad, Classified). Through much practice their music developed and they decided on the name Puressence, a name instantly identified by most Mancunians for the paper letters 'P'-'U'-'R'-'E'-'S'-'S'-'E'-'N'-'C'-'E', which were plastered around Manchester city centre, on derelict buildings, and on bridges (the most notable being the railway bridge opposite the Haçienda). Manchester independent record label 2 Damn Loud released two singles and there was a further single with Rough Trade Singles Club. The band played a series of gigs at Manchester's In The City festival early in the 1990s. The big breakthrough came a couple of years later, when the band signed to Island Records.
Blameless, 1995 Blameless were a rock quartet formed in Sheffield, England in 1993/94. The band consisted of singer Jared Daley, guitarist Matt Pirt, bassist Jason Leggatt and drummer Jon Dodd. Although coming from the UK during a "British Invasion" headed by Oasis, the band have been more-often compared to American bands such as Pearl Jam and R.E.M.. Their inclusion of the song "Town Clowns" in the Rough Trade Singles Club caught the attention of several labels, and the band finally signed to China Records. They released a single for China, "Don't Say You're Sorry", and then went to Fort Apache Studios in Boston, Massachusetts to record their debut album, The Signs Are All There.
Following the tour, Immerwahr returned to New York working as an engineer at Mike McMacklin's Sound on Sound studio. John Engle worked as a delivery man for a restaurant and Chris Brokaw waited tables and wrote songs with Thalia Zedek that would later be released on Eleven:Eleven, the debut album for Come. Towards the end of 1991, Sub Pop gave the group $1000 to record the July 1992 entry in the labels singles club series. The group entered James Kavoussi's Toxic Shock Studios on Broadway in New York with Frigid Stars LP producer Mike McMacklin to record early versions of "Realize", "Jr", and a cover of the MX-80 song "Promise of Love".
Walters fronted a number of bands in his teens before signing to Warner Chappell Music Publishing as frontman of Theremin in 2001. The band released one double A-side single—"In the Barn/Minor Planets"—through Oxford 'singles club' label Shifty Disco in 2001, before disbanding in late 2002. Walters was then taken on as a solo artist by both Warner Chappell Music and Radiohead's Courtyard Management in 2003, recording the Umbrella Songs EP at the companies' Oxfordshire studios in 2004. It was released by Half A Cow records in November 2003 receiving airplay on National Youth broadcaster, Triple JHerald Sun, 16 October 2003, "the goods on new album" and community radio stations across Australia including 3RRR (Melbourne), PBS (Melbourne), FBi (Sydney), 2SER (Sydney), 3D Radio (Adelaide), 4ZZZ (Brisbane) and RTRFM (Perth). Melbourne's Inpress magazine bestowing 'Single of the Week' status upon the song "Abraham Lincoln", which appeared on a split 7-inch shared with New Yorkers, The Essex Green. The single was released as part of the Singles Club collective, through Low Transit Industries.

Despite the positive response to their album, The Monsoon Bassoon did not get signed by any major labels to enable them to make the next step in scaling up their career. Undeterred, they continued to perform live, and to record and release on Weird Neighbourhood. 2000 saw the release of two seven-inch vinyl split singles, intended as the first two parts of an ongoing collaborative series, in which the band would cover/adapt one piece by a chosen collaborator in and in return would have one of their own pieces covered or adapted in a similar way. Wall of Suss 1 saw the band working with Rothko and Wall Of Suss 2 was a collaboration with Max Tundra. In mid-2001, The Monsoon Bassoon provided three tracks for the "Summer 2001" box-set release in Day Release Records’ "Four Seasons Singles Club" series (alongside Defeat The Young and The Naysayer).
