Main articles: Homeopathy Homeopathy and natural medicine were the focus of the studies of the students at MSM. Two main principles guide the use of medicine in homeopathy: the Similia Principle and the Dose. The Similia Principle states that a substance that can cause a symptom complex in a healthy person can be used to treat similar symptoms in a sick person. The Dose states that the quantity of medicine used should be the smallest possible to affect a cure and should not be repeated as long as improvement lasts.

Organotherapy is a technique that makes use of extracts derived from animal or human tissues to treat medical conditions. The practice of treating an organ with the same one derived from another creature, known as similia similibus, was familiar to the Ancient Greeks and Romans; consuming brain tissue was considered a potential treatment for those of low intellect for instance.

A popular aphorism used for predicting solubility is "like dissolves like" also expressed in the Latin language as "Similia similibus solventur". This statement indicates that a solute will dissolve best in a solvent that has a similar chemical structure to itself. This view is simplistic, but it is a useful rule of thumb. The overall solvation capacity of a solvent depends primarily on its polarity.

Homeopathy or homoeopathy is a pseudoscientific system of alternative medicine. It was created in 1796 by the German physician Samuel Hahnemann. Its practitioners, called homeopaths, believe that a substance that causes symptoms of a disease in healthy people would cure similar symptoms in sick people; this doctrine is called similia similibus curentur, or "like cures like". Homeopathic preparations are termed remedies and are made using homeopathic dilution.

Hahnemann conceived of homeopathy while translating a medical treatise by the Scottish physician and chemist William Cullen into German. Being sceptical of Cullen's theory that cinchona cured malaria because it was bitter, Hahnemann ingested some bark specifically to investigate what would happen. He experienced fever, shivering and joint pain: symptoms similar to those of malaria itself.

From this, Hahnemann came to believe that all effective drugs produce symptoms in healthy individuals similar to those of the diseases that they treat, in accord with the "law of similars" that had been proposed by ancient physicians. This led to the name "homeopathy", which comes from the hómoios, "-like" and páthos, "suffering". The law of similars doctrine is called similia similibus curentur, or "like cures like". Hahnemann's law of similars is an ipse dixit that does not derive from the scientific method.

In the area of Law, the summa is a practical and didactic genre, that was developed from the methodology of the gloss. It was divided into two different literary genres: the summa (derived from the similia), and the questio legitima (derived from the contraria). The summa was born in the minor Law schools whose aim was to instruct their students with easy summaries of the Justinian codes. In order to achieve this goal, easy, simple and systematic summaries of whole works were made, and the literary genre of the summae in the legal area was born.

The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C; Act) of 1938 recognized homeopathic preparations as drugs, but with significant exceptions. A principal sponsor of the Act was New York Senator and homeopathic physician Royal Copeland, who ensured that homeopathy's own Homœopathic Pharmacopœia of the United States (HPUS) be included, as it expressed the "self-professed quality standards" of the homeopathic profession. The finished Act thus created loopholes for the regulation of homeopathic drugs, and they are thus exempted from many of the rules regulating other drugs.

He pursued what he considered "natural laws" of medicine, opposing allopathy and developed the "laws of similars" (similia similibus curantur, meaning like is cured by like). His unorthodox views were controversial at the time, but Hahnemann continued to pursue his homeopathic studies and published several works, including The Organon of the Healing Act (1810), Materia Medica Para (1811–1821), and The Chronic Diseases, Their Peculiar Nature and Their Homeopathic Cure (1828). He is considered the greatest influence on the practice of homeopathy, which was very influential in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A monument honoring Hahnemann was first proposed in 1881 by physician James H. McClelland at a meeting of the Homeopathic Medical Society.

The text is composed of, and devised from, translations, adaptations, quotations and fragments from the Old and New Testaments of the Bible; Martin Luther; Herbert Maly; Byzantine hymnography; Stephen Hawking; The I Ching by Chuang-tse; the Torah; the Divine Liturgy; Carl Gustav Jung; AION; Ananda K. Coomaraswamy; Monoimos; The Guardian; Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species; Plato; Paracelsus' Hermetic Formula — "Similia similibus curantur" ("Like is cured by like"); and Job ix:20. The pre-recorded tapes for the opera were produced from numerous recordings of workshops with Access Arts members in August 1997 and April 1998 in Brisbane, Australia.

He also organized lectures by artists at Columbia. A result of Crone’s curatorial and pedagogic initiatives was the thematic exhibition Similia/Dissimilia, conceived and organized by Crone in collaboration with his students (1986–87). The show presented an early contemporary section (1960 to 1966) featuring artists Donald Judd, Joseph Beuys, Alighiero Boetti, John Chamberlain, Eva Hesse, Robert Ryman, Jasper Johns, Yves Klein and others, with as-yet unexhibited examples of their early work, along with the work of younger artists including Francesco Clemente, Peter Halley, Roni Horn, Anish Kapoor, Imi Knoebel, Tim Rollins & K.O.S., Philip Taaffe, Rosemarie Trockel, and Georg Herold. This exhibition was first hosted in the US by Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Art Gallery at Columbia University, Ileana Sonnabend Gallery and Leo Castelli Gallery in New York - and was subsequently shown at Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, Germany.
