Andrew of Metal Injection called the song the album's "most brutal moment" and called the addition of Jones on the song "an awesome fan-nerd moment, and a welcome combination of two of metal's most forceful voices." Ricky Aarons of Wall of Sound also praised Leach and Jones's performances, noting that the vocals of Jones were closer in style to what he used with Killswitch Engage compared to the style he uses in his current band Light the Torch.

As dusk approaches the abbot and his party become aware of a tall dark man accompanied by a black hound standing close by, whom one of the party recognises as Nicholas Demdike, husband of Bess Demdike, "an approved and notorious witch". Demdike starts to sing, mocking the abbot and foretelling of his execution, which so enrages the abbot that he orders one of his archers to loose a shot at him. But Demdike merely laughs before disappearing down the hill, only pausing about half-way down to trace a circle in the grass and repeat some incantation. In the growing darkness a signal fire is seen on a neighbouring hill, then another and another.

During Act I, the player assumes command of the Knights of St. John, which resembles the Spanish civilization. In the late 16th century, Morgan Black—a Scottish-born mid-level commander of the Knights of Saint John—is defending their last stronghold on Malta from the forces of Sahin "The Falcon" of the Ottoman Empire (in a telling of the Great Siege of Malta). When the Ottomans send in their great bombards, Morgan then lights a signal fire to call in supporting cavalry led by his superior, Alain Magnan, who drive the Turks back and capture a bombard. Morgan and Alain drive the Ottomans from Malta and detonate Ottoman weapon caches in the nearby caves.

Diana is first seen in action as Wonder Woman stopping a terrorist bomb plot in London at the beginning of the film. Seeing a news report that features a signal fire burning at the Shrine of the Amazons in Greece, Diana realizes that her mother had sent a message from Themyscira to warn her of an impending invasion, particularly, that of Steppenwolf (Ciaran Hinds). She then meets with Bruce Wayne in Gotham City, and the two decide to follow up on their plans to recruit other metahumans. While Bruce goes after Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa), also known as Aquaman, and Barry Allen (Ezra Miller), also known as the Flash, Diana tracks down the elusive Victor Stone (Ray Fisher), also known as Cyborg.

Uniform tunic buttons, lapel badges and the reverse of the ROC Medal also depict the soldier in the same pose while standing beside a coastal signal fire or warning beacon, with a chain of lit beacons extending along the coastline into the far distance. (In this representation it was easy to imagine the figure looking out towards the next beacon in the chain). The symbol of the coast watcher has its origins in the Elizabethan era, where such individuals were organised and paid for by the County Sheriff to tend and light beacons to warn of approaching enemies, such as the Spanish Armada of that period. Unlike an Armed Services unit, (having a Regimental Colour), the ROC has, in place of such, a Royal Banner.

One, which is favoured by Durham Wildlife Trust, relates the name to the ancient lead-smelting industry, in which a "baal" (or "bail") is said to have been a local term for a pit in which lead ore was "boiled" to remove impurities. There are references in old manuscripts to "les Bolehill" at Wolsingham and to payments being made to "bolers". Another explanation is that "baal" derives from an old spelling of "bailiff" and that the nearby Baal Hill House, referred to in a manuscript of 1558 as "Baylehilhous", was at one time the residence of the Bishop of Durham's local bailiff. The modern name is a corruption of northern dialect bale, a signal fire or beacon, based on an association with the Baal, the Old Testament deity mentioned in the Book of Jeremiah.

There is some doubt as to how long the family had held the ancestral family home, but it is certain that there a castle of sorts at Hawkshaw, probably built as no more than a small fortified keep, and intended as a watch tower where a signal fire could be lit to warn of approaching danger. A line of these so-called Peel towers was built in the 1430s across the Tweed valley from Berwick to its source, as a response to the dangers of invasion from the English borders. Hawkshaw was one of over two dozen of these in Peeblesshire alone. During the eighteenth century there began a massive migration of families from Scotland, initially to England and Ireland - and eventually to the New World and the newly discovered countries of the British Empire.

On August 30, 2017, the band announced on their Instagram page that they were in the process of demoing material for their upcoming eighth studio album. In April 2018, it was revealed that their former singer Howard Jones will appear on their new album performing a duet with Jesse Leach during a song that was revealed to be titled "The Signal Fire". The band cancelled their tour dates from April 26 to May 5 due to the need of vocalist Jesse Leach undergoing surgery on his vocal cords. During an interview with the Wall of Sound: Up Against the Wall podcast in October 2018, Jesse Leach revealed more details about the song with former singer Howard Jones stating: "He does a verse, I do a verse, we sing the chorus together it's a real heavy shitkicker" and that the song was inspired by Howard's new band name Light the Torch and their friendship.
