The Shrives (formerly "Matt Grocott & the Shrives") is an English punk rock band formed in Grantham, England, by Matt Grocott. In 2014 the band toured the UK with SWMRS. SWMRS drummer Joey Armstrong went on to record drums for the band's first full-length album, recorded that same year in Oakland, California at Jingletown Recording Studios. Green Day's frontman, Billie Joe Armstrong produced the album and played bass in a few songs.

Frankenshark Two songs, "TV Dinner" and "Stink Eye", were tweeted by the band as a Soundcloud link under the name of Frankenshark. To date, "Stink Eye", (later renamed "Tito, Don't Give Me Stink Eye") has been played live several times as SWMRS. Matt Grocott & The Shrives In 2014 two UK bands called Matt Grocott & The Shrives toured with Emily's Army. They booked these dates under the name "Swimmers", conceiving the name for Emily's Army.

Shives (also Shrives) is an unincorporated community in Chicot County, Arkansas, United States. Shives is located on the southeast shore of Lake Chicot, approximately west of the Mississippi River. U.S. Route 278 passes through Shives, and Shives is the first settlement west of the Greenville Bridge.

It was later announced Joey Armstrong would feature on drums for Matt Grocott & The Shrives' first EP; "Turn Me On" after the band had visited him in California. DDG DDG is a band formed at school by Joey and Seb and a few friends. They released two EPs for free on Bandcamp Fact Check and A DDG Christmas. The Christmas record featured Max and Travis from Emily's Army on bass and rhythm guitar.

The Roy Hesketh Circuit was a racing circuit located on the outskirts of Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal. It was named after South African racing driver Roy Hesketh, who died in the Second World War. Doug Aldridge, Colin Dove, Ossie Fisher, George Finch and George Shrives got together as a Consortium from Pietermaritzburg in the early nineteen fifties to first build and then maintain and improve the circuit. During its period of operation (1953-1981) it hosted rounds of the South African National Drivers Championship, and national Formula Atlantic races.

The velodrome is situated within Preston Park, Brighton, which was opened in 1884 following the purchase by Brighton Corporation of land from V F Bennett-Stanford in 1883 for £50,000. The entire park was laid out by the Corporation's Head Gardener, James Shrives and the Borough Engineer, Philip Lockwood, in 1883-4 and formally opened to the public on 8 November 1884. Construction then moved onto the velodrome and cricket ground site, which was previously a polo ground during the Stanfords' ownership, this use being transferred to the park's playing fields upon purchase by Brighton Corporation. A retaining bank in the north-east corner of the park was constructed to house the cricket ground and surrounding cycle track.

Before this change was made, Swimmers was the name that the band used as a low key name for a small UK tour with Matt Grocott & The Shrives and Wasters. The band released their first song as Swimmers, a cover of "Dancing on My Own", by Robyn in October 2014. The band announced that they would be releasing an EP, Silver Bullets/Palm Trees on March 30, 2015. In March 2015, the band announced that Silver Bullets/Palm Trees release would be delayed and that Jakob Armstrong, brother of drummer Joey, would be filling in for, and subsequently replacing, bassist Seb Mueller, who had to take college exams. On March 28, 2015 at Burgerama, bassist Seb Mueller returned to the band. The release of Silver Bullets/Palm Trees was eventually shelved.
