It is a soft rock ballad that features Richards on wah wah/Leslie speaker filtered guitar with Mick Taylor playing a brief solo. In addition, "Short and Curlies" was started at the Goats Head Soup sessions and ended up appearing on the It's Only Rock 'n' Roll LP.

In July 1974, the lead single, "It's Only Rock ’n Roll (But I Like It)," was released. Despite the familiar sound, it surprised many by failing to reach the top 10 in the United States (although it did reach the top 10 in the UK). With its sing-along chorus, it has become a staple at Rolling Stones concerts. The B-side "Through the Lonely Nights" (later included on the album Rarities 1971–2003) dates back to the previous year's Goats Head Soup sessions as well as the track "Short and Curlies". A cover of "Ain’t Too Proud to Beg," originally a 1966 hit by The Temptations, was released as the second single in the United States only, where it also became a top 20 hit.

For the BBC and Masterpiece Theatre, he was Executive Producer of Noël Coward's Star Quality, a series of six plays which starred, among others, Judi Dench, Ian Holm, Susannah York, Ian Richardson, Patricia Hayes, Max Wall, Gary Waldhorn, Nigel Havers and a very young Hugh Laurie. From 1984 until 1996 Victor Glynn was with Portman Productions (later) Portman Zenith Group, initially as Head of Production and for the last nine years as Chief Executive. In 1987, Victor Glynn produced Mike Leigh's film The Short and Curlies and in 1988 co-produced (with Simon Channing-Williams) the multi award-winning Mike Leigh feature High Hopes for Channel Four and Palace Pictures. For this work, Rake lay fully immersed in a glass tank filled with melted lard, again breathing through a tube, until the fat cooled down and solidified. The work was presented in an installation where three aligned television monitors, each showing a third of the artist's body and together forming a nearly life-size image, are fitted in blankly dark premises, raised on a platform with their backs turned to the spectator; in front of the screens a pane of shop-window glass is hung obliquely, so that the view from the screens is reflected in the glass. As of 2006, "Till The Next Goodbye," "Time Waits For No-One," "If You Really Want To Be My Friend" and "Short and Curlies" had never been played live. In order to promote the album, music videos were filmed for several of the songs. The most commonly seen video from the album was the one for "It’s Only Rock’n’Roll (But I Like It)," featuring the band (in sailor suits) playing in a tent, which gradually fills with soap bubbles (Taylor is featured in the video but did not actually play on the recorded cut). Videos were also filmed for "Ain’t Too Proud to Beg" and "Till The Next Goodbye." In 1994, It's Only Rock ’n Roll was remastered and reissued by Virgin Records, in 2009 by Universal Music, and once more in 2011 by Universal Music Enterprises in a Japanese-only SHM-SACD version.
