He became secretary of the Perth Chamber of Commerce, and was also a director of a local building society. Allen served on the Perth City Council from 1904 to 1912 and again from 1915 to 1918. He first ran for parliament at the 1908 Legislative Council elections, but lost to Arthur Jenkins in Metropolitan Province.
When still young John Mackintosh went to work in the City of London, showing great ability as a businessman and returning to Gibraltar to join his uncle John Peacock in the cotton goods and shipping trade as Peacock & Company. He later entered into partnership with C.W. Mathiesen, Consul for Denmark and shipping agent. This partnership was later followed by that of Crusoe & Mackintosh. The firm prospered as it developed its extensive coal business.

He attended Burwood Public School and Sydney Grammar School before working in his father's business and eventually becoming a customs and shipping agent. On 14 October 1911 he married Ethel May Hindmarsh at Gerringong, with whom he would have three children.

John Richard Ryan (24 April 1911 – 12 September 1988) was an Australian politician who represented the South Australian House of Assembly seats of Port Adelaide from 1959 to 1970 and Price from 1970 to 1975 for the Labor Party. He served as Speaker of the South Australian House of Assembly for the Don Dunstan Labor government from 1973 to 1975. Prior to parliament he was a waterside worker and a Licensed Customs and Shipping Agent.
Egon Terzetta (Bulgarian: Егон Терцета) (2 July 1899 Valona, Ottoman Empire, modern-day Albania - 16 August 1964 Genoa, Italy) was an Italian football player who played for SK Ticha and SC Vladislav from Varna, Bulgaria. Terzetta was born into a family of old Venetian descent. At age 9, Egon was sent to the Military Academy of Vienna (Militar Oberrealschule – Marburg), where he graduated at 18. He followed in his father's footsteps, becoming a shipping agent.

Cornelius Kingsland Garrison (March 1, 1809 – May 1, 1885) was a steamboat captain, shipping agent, shipbuilder, capitalist, and the fifth Mayor of San Francisco (1853–1854). He was born in Fort Montgomery, near West Point, New York. During his childhood, he studied architecture and civil engineering while working on his father's schooner. Henry Frederick Keep (27 January 1863 – 26 September 1905) was a Member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from 1894 to 1897. The son of farmer Adam Corrie Keep, Henry Keep was born in Wollaston, Northamptonshire, England on 27 January 1863, and named, according to his birth certificate, Henry Francis Keep. Around 1890 he emigrated to Western Australia, establishing himself as a shipping agent at Cossack. Around 1893 he moved to Fremantle where he was agent for the Adelaide Steamship Company until 1897.

Carrega studied at the religious high school managed by the Piarists in Cornigliano, and then in a few private schools, without achieving a diploma. In 1955, he was pushed by his parents to travel to London to learn the profession of shipping agent, and there he became proficient in the English language.

On 10 June 1890 he appeared at Liverpool County Intermediate Sessions court at Sessions House, Islington, Liverpool after previously having pleaded guilty to housebreaking and larceny on 31 May 1890. On 27 May 1890 he had broken into the dwelling house of his sister's employer, Charles Fay junior, shipping agent, Courtney Road, Great Crosby and stolen a quantity of silver and electro-plated articles. He was given a six-month prison sentence.

Sir John Frederick Drughorn, 1st Baronet (1 August 1862 – 23 February 1943) was a Dutch-born English shipowner and benefactor. Drughorn was born Jean Frederic Drughorn in Amsterdam, as the oldest son of the shipping agent Johannes Jacobus Drughorn (1839–1967) and Frederica Christina Kessler, both from Amsterdam.Amsterdam citizen registration 1853-63 At the age of 20, already in charge of his father's business, he married Roosje Moses Piller (1863, Purmerend – 1943, Sobibor). Born in Limehouse, a maritime district of London, Cayzer was the son of Charles Cayzer, a schoolmaster, and his wife Mary Elizabeth née Nicklin. Nortonville owes its existence to the railroad industry and is named for Eckstein Norton, a Kentucky-born investment banker who started as a clerk in a country store in Russellville, Kentucky, in 1846. Norton participated in the creation of the Elizabethtown and Paducah Railroad in the late 1860s (east- west tracks). He then purchased of land in what would become "Norton Village", later changed to "Nortonville" around 1900. John White (1830 – 4 September 1876) was a 19th-century member of the House of Representatives from the West Coast, New Zealand. White was born in England in 1830, the son of Richard White of London. Perla Siedle Gibson was a South African soprano and artist who became internationally celebrated during the Second World War as the Lady in White, when she sang troopships in and out of Durban harbour. Gibson was born in Durban in 1888, the daughter of Otto Siedle, a prominent local shipping agent, businessman and musician of German extraction. In the early twentieth century she studied music and art in Europe and the US, and gave recitals in London and New York. Her youngest brother was Jack Siedle, the South African Test cricketer.
William Henry Paxton (1844 – 19 August 1887) was a prominent businessman in the early days of Mackay, Queensland. He was born in 1844 in Berwick, Northumberland to Thomas Paxton and Mary Louisa Pease. Little is known of his earliest days in Australia, but he arrived in Mackay in 1874 as assistant to Robert Jonathan Jeffray of Wm. Sloan and Co., a Melbourne merchant house. In 1876, he took over the store of sugar grower Arthur Kemmis and expanded the business as merchant and shipping agent, with close links to the Australasian United Steam Navigation Company.

Born on 23 June 1860 in Copenhagen, Denmark, Mathilda was the daughter of the photographer and engineer Wilhelm Ranch (died 1906). She moved to Sweden with her family when she was 10, first to Gothenburg and then to Varberg where her father established a photographic studio in 1871. In 1882, when she was only 22, her father transferred the studio to her, preferring to act as a shipping agent. In 1872 he moved to Townsville and set up his own business there, as improvements to the port and the wharves on Ross Creek were beginning. The creation of the province of Manitoba from the former Rupert's Land in 1870 marked the end of the HBC trade monopoly. In 1872 Kittson joined up with another former competitor, James Jerome Hill, forming the Red River Transportation Company.
In 1862, he went to Louisville, Kentucky, to take command of a steamer running from there to Memphis, Tennessee. He returned to St. Louis in 1864 to serve as captain of the steamer Davenport, which ran from St. Louis to St. Paul, before resigning that position to organize a branch of the Halliday Brothers Corporation in Cairo, Illinois, which was engaged in the river transportation and shipping businesses. At around this time he moved to Antwerp where he held an informal position as shipping agent handling trade in the name of Queen Mary. The following year he returned to Italy and worked as a shipping agent, then since 1963 as a translator for various publishers. A lych-gate, which is also heritage listed, was built in 1919 as a memorial to Woodville men who served in World War One. The church is significant as one of several 'village' churches built within the Adelaide districts between 1836 and 1860, as well as its representation of the development of the early Anglican Church within South Australia. The Brocas Museum, located on Woodville Road, is the former residence of John Newman, a shipping agent, and Henry Fletcher. The heritage significance of the Brocas includes its representation of the scale and style of residence built by the Adelaide gentry in what was at the time a semi-rural district.

Her son, James Hughes, a shipping agent who operated a steamship business between Tenby and Bristol then ran the hotel with his wife Maria. Hughes was appointed chief magistrate of the town in 1840–41. After his death in September 1857, Maria took over the hotel and was in charge until her death in 1883, after nearly fifty years at the Cobourg. Maria's youngest son John Bilbie Hughes succeeded her as landlord of the hotel, but six years later his died of gout at just 45, leaving his widow Joyce to co-operate the hotel along with the Royal Station Hotel in Bath until her death in March 1923.
Arthur Lewin Alexander (6 March 1907 – 17 April 1971) was a British police officer and was the last non-Ghanaian Inspector General of Police of the Ghana Police Service from 1 May 1958 to 8 October 1959. After returning to England, he served as secretary of the Henley Royal Regatta from 1959 to his death. He was awarded the King's Police Medal for Meritorious Service in the 1951 Birthday Honours and was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 1959 New Year Honours. Alexander was born in Hutton, Essex to Lewin Venn Alexander, a shipping agent and underwriter, and Miriam Devereux Alexander.
A Russian freighter delivered 500 tons of Ukrainian 7.62 mm ammunition to Simportex, a division of the Angolan government, with the help of a shipping agent in London on September 21, 2000. The ship's captain declared his cargo "fragile" to minimize inspection. The next day, the MPLA began attacking UNITA, winning victories in several battles from September 22–25. The government gained control over military bases and diamond mines in Lunda Norte and Lunda Sul, hurting Savimbi's ability to pay his troops. Angola agreed to trade oil to Slovakia in return for arms, buying six Sukhoi Su-17 attack aircraft on April 3, 2000.
In 1888 during a stop-over on Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean, Conrad developed a couple of romantic interests. One of these would be described in his 1910 story "A Smile of Fortune", which contains autobiographical elements (e.g., one of the characters is the same Chief Mate Burns who appears in The Shadow Line). The narrator, a young captain, flirts ambiguously and surreptitiously with Alice Jacobus, daughter of a local merchant living in a house surrounded by a magnificent rose garden. Research has confirmed that in Port Louis at the time there was a 17-year-old Alice Shaw, whose father, a shipping agent, owned the only rose garden in town.
Mann was the son of Rudolf Mann, a shipping agent who later became a board member at IG Farben and Bayer, and his wife Selma Herrenbrück. Mann initially received a commercial education in Cologne and served a three- year apprenticeship at an Elberfeld steelworks before serving with the German Imperial Army in the First World War. Following his military service he studied political economy for a time before entering the sales department at Hoechst, rising quickly through the ranks at the company. The Phillip's Foote building, constructed in 1838, is of significance as part of the early commercial development of The Rocks area, with a history of tenancies typical of the area's association with shipping and wharfage, including a shipping providore, oyster saloon, wine bar, shipping agent, and commission agent. In the evolution of The Rocks, the Phillip's Foote building is of some significance as the first building to be subject of major renovations following the Green Bans' halting of redevelopment plans for the area.
One of Helbert's Lane uncles was a Major- general in the Bengal Army and another, a shipping agent with Lane, Hickey & Company (bust by 1865), was English Secretary to the Japanese Legation in London and a Knight Commander of the Orders of the Rising Sun of Japan, Christ of Portugal, and Isabella the Catholic of Spain. His aunt (click here to see a portrait of her by Fedrico de Madrazo y Kuntz, now in the Musée Bonnat, Bayonne) Adeline (1825–1892) was wife to Baron de Weissweiller of Madrid. Another was married to a Duke de Laurito (d.1907). His Cohen great-aunts, who were also his cousins, had married Nathan Mayer Rothschild and Moses Montefiore.
After satisfying himself that a repeat of Flying Scotsman's stranding in the United States in 1972 was not likely occur, McAlpine asked George Hinchcliffe, a former manager of the Flying Scotsman and a former director of Steamtown Railway Museum in Carnforth, where the locomotive was based, to help prepare it for the trip. Final agreement was reached when McAlpine met representatives of the Victorian Department of Transport, and the P&O; shipping agent, in Transport House in Yarraville. Although the Flying Scotsman was set to come to Australia, some problems were emerging. The New South Wales Bicentennial programme was taking its toll, with many locomotives failing and others not restored in time for the celebrations.

Notes in library catalogue entry have details about Collinsons time in Perth - He moved to South Australia around 1847 and set up in business as a shipping agent, taking over the lease of Queen's Wharf, Port Adelaide to which he added the bonded warehouse in 1848. In 1851 Collinson and Younghusband built a wharf at the top end of the Port River opposite Fletcher's Slip, officially named "Princes Wharf" but was generally known as "Collinson's Wharf" until around 1861. He was member of the South Australian House of Assembly for the seat of Port Adelaide from 11 October 1858 to 12 March 1860.
After the establishment of the company Burns Philp ships were openly dispatched on recruiting voyages. During 1883-1884 the company had five ships working in the trade, however, they dropped out of the trade after two crew from a company ship Hopeful were found guilty of murder and the captain and crew were found guilty of kidnapping in 1884. Despite the loss of the Pacific labour trade, by the 1890s there were branches of the business at Cairns, Charters Towers, Cooktown, Normanton, Burketown, Brisbane, Sydney and in the Pacific. At the same time Burns became a shipping agent for companies such as the Queensland Steam Shipping Company which had the mail contract from London via Singapore, Batavia, Thursday Island, Townsville to Sydney.
In 1869 Lindsay partially removed from the company's activities with the formation of a second company Acraman, Main, & Co., but Acraman, Main, Lindsay, & Co. continued to trade until around 1870. He was a director of the South Australian Gas Company 1870 to 1873. In 1873 he opened a business in Port Darwin and Palmerston as shipping agent and merchant, stocking a small range of foodstuffs and beverages, and agent for Adelaide Marine and Fire Assurance Co. and Mercantile Marine Insurance Co., he may also have acquired a large interest in land in the Northern Territory and gold mining at Yam Creek. The tropics did not agree with his health, and he only stayed up north a few months; he sold up in 1878.

Zaharoff did not make arms dealing his sole business at first. After Cyprus passed under British control in 1878 he seems to have slipped back into Britain; by 1883 he was working as a shipping agent in Galway, Ireland, where he recruited local girls for work in American factories. He also had a spell in the United States where he worked as a confidence man, and later as a salesman for a St. Louis railcar business. In 1885, posing as "Prince Zacharias Basileus Zacharoff", he married a Philadelphia heiress, Jennie Billings, and was pursued to Rotterdam by detectives after his exposure as a bigamist by an Englishman who recognised him as the same man who had married an English girl in Bristol in 1872.
Myrsten was an authorized shipping agent for Gotland, CEO and director of Rederi AB Volo from 1947 and CEO of AB Robert Myrsten from 1950. He was a member of the National Board for the Granting of Loans on Small Ships (Statens lånenämnd för den mindre skeppsfarten) in 1957 and was a member of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors for The Baltic and International Maritime Conference in Copenhagen. Myrsten was a board member of the Swedish Shipowners' Association (Sveriges Redareförening) and Rederi AB Gotland and was a member of the Stockholm Mercantile Marine Office Board (Stockholms sjömansnämnd), the city council and the Slite port directorate and was chairman of Slite Association of the Right (Slite högerförening) from 1959 to 1962.
Vasko Lipovac was born on June 14, 1931, in Škaljari, a small coastal settlement near Kotor in Montenegro. He was the youngest of five children in a very harmonious family of a prosperous merchant and a shipping agent Spasoje Lipovac and Antica Lui, the daughter of a respectable landowner Maksimilijan Lui. He attended Real Grammar School in Kotor, where his drawing teacher was Mato Đuranović (1895–1973), the painter who inspired his students with the bright, shiny colors of his works. After graduating from the secondary school, he moved to Zagreb, Croatia in 1950 and enrolled in the Academy of Applied Arts. He initially chose sculpture, in the class of Kosta Angeli Radovani, but during his second year (1951/1952) he switched to painting, where his mentor became Željko Hegedušić.

In Sydney on 5 March 1838, with Joshua Young and his brother Alexander, both of whom he had known in Scotland, he established Ramsay, Young & Co., a mercantile firm and shipping agent. The inclusion of the name 'Ramsay & Young' in a letter dated 22 August 1838 to Sir Gordon Bremer regarding a new settlement at Port Essington revealed that even then Robert and his partners had an eye on trading up north. From sometime in 1839 until 27 January 1843, Ramsay and the Young brothers were also in business with a John Holdsworth in Holdsworth & Co., a trading company in Sydney that specialised in ironmongery. Anecdotal evidence together with numerous local newspaper advertisements and articles at the time relating to shipping in and out of Sydney suggests that both firms did well.
Dinsdale was born in Aberystwyth, Wales, the son of Felix and Dorys (Smith) Dinsdale, who were on a year's leave from China where his father was a shipping agent. Along with his parents, his older sister, Felicity, and later a younger brother, Peter, he lived in Hong Kong, Antung, and Shanghai, going to the China Inland Missionary School in Chefoo some 500 miles away from his home.. This necessitated a journey along the coast and in 1935 the ship, SS Tungchow, containing 70 British and American schoolchildren, was seized by pirates. Eventually Dinsdale and the other children were rescued by HMS Hermes a British Aircraft carrier. The 10-year-old Dinsdale wrote an account of the adventure which received second prize in a competition run by a local newspaper, his first success as a writer.
Jim Hawkins (Ashley Knight) discovers a treasure map and embarks on a journey to find the treasure, but pirates led by Long John Silver (Alfred Burke) have plans to take the treasure for themselves by way of mutiny. This four-episode adaptation by John Lucarotti, while particularly faithful to the original, adds an expanded narrative concerning the declining Daniel Hawkins, as well as clarifying Squire Trelawney's naiveté in trusting Blandly and Silver. This takes place in the first episode; Billy Bones tempts Jim's father into arranging a two-man treasure voyage, the corrupt shipping agent Ezra Blandly guesses their intentions and tips off Silver, who hoodwinks and then cruelly tortures the information out of a hapless alcoholic Mr Arrow. Billy Bones plans founder, and Hawkins snr catches pneumonia in the rain, which finishes him.
The Raphael Mackeller Stores is associated with the merchants and professionals Frederick Mackellar (solicitor, father of long-term parliamentarian Sir Charles Mackellar and grandfather of poet Dorothea Mackellar), Joseph George Raphael (merchant, seaman shipping agent, clothier, publican and member of NSW parliament) and Frederic Wright Unwin, who were all instrumental in the early development of the commercial precinct of George Street North and Kendall Lane. The place is important in demonstrating aesthetic characteristics and/or a high degree of creative or technical achievement in New South Wales. The Raphael Mackeller Stores is a well detailed colonial sandstone three storey building which is relatively intact and has had sympathetic restoration works carried out. It is an extremely significant townscape element to Kendall Lane portraying the original form, scale, detail and material of the 1850s.
Captain Hustwick had contracted the disease but recovered as did Dr. Bowler of the Rattlesnake. These three were popularly regarded as heroes; John Marshall, the London shipping agent whose duty it was to select prospective migrants and arrange their transportation, was the villain, dubbed "dealer in human flesh" for overcrowding the ship. Government regulations stipulated a maximum of 2 persons (including crew) for every 5 tons of Registered Burthen; Lady MacNaghten, of 550 tons should have carried no more than 334; she was carrying an equivalent of 336 adults, so certainly the ship was overcrowded, but the previous year she carried 300 convicts, a crew of 37 and 49 guards; 386 in all, but only lost two. Sixty-one Lady McNaghten passengers were lost, though probably not all to typhus.
After a lot of commotion Mr. Plate noted that: while he was busy promoting the establishment of the SMN among investors in Rotterdam, he could not imagine that one of the directors would appoint himself as its exclusive shipping agent. Shortly after the meeting Mr Plate was decorated with the Order of the Netherlands Lion. F.D. Franssen van de Putte then carried a motion to appoint a commission to investigate how the board should be formed. He was appointed chairman, and other members were C. Hartsen, N.G. Pierson, L. Pincoffs and P.H. Holzman. On 31 May 1872 the regular shareholders meeting took place. The loss for 1871 was 141,000 guilders, about 85,000 was caused by the burning of Willem III, 10,000 by the delayed first trip of Prins van Oranje.
Hunter was born in Banffshire, Scotland, in 1821. He was the eldest son of George Hunter, the first Mayor of Wellington. He came to New Zealand with his parents, six sisters, and three brothers. He worked in his father's business as a general merchant and shipping agent. His father died in 1843, his father's business partner Kenneth Bethune died in 1855, and Hunter became sole proprietor of the business. Hunter was appointed to the Legislative Council of the Province of New Munster in 1848. He was first elected to the Wellington Provincial Council on 5 November 1857 for the City of Wellington electorate, and served until the abolition of provincial government in October 1876. He was a member of the Wellington Executive Council in 1858, in 1871, and in 1873.

The outbreak of the American Revolutionary War in 1775, and the need to service substantial fleets at sea, strained Royal Navy resources and necessitated the purchase of additional storeships, transports and victualler vessels. As part of this process, on 13 June 1776 the Admiralty instructed the Navy Board to obtain two new ships of around 300 tons burthen, which would resupply naval vessels then operating off the Gulf of St Lawrence in North America. Only one such ship was immediately available a merchant barque named Union, was offered for sale by shipping agent James Wilkinson, with an asking price was £9 per ton for hull, masts and yards. A Navy Board counter-offer of £6.4s per ton was refused, and on 10 July the vessel was purchased on Wilkinson's terms for £3,438.
Gray was born in Sydney to Alexander Gray, a licensed victualler, and his wife Margaret (née Hall). He left school early but studied accountancy at night and in 1863 moved to Queensland where he found work with Clarke, Hodgson & Co, first as a clerk in Ipswich and then as a manager in Brisbane.Gray, George Wilkie (1844–1924) – Australian Dictionary of Biography Retrieved 15 March 2015. Around 1870, Gray became friends with Michael Quinlan, a mercantile shipping agent, and joined Quinlan Donnelly & Co. After Quinlan died in 1878, his widow made Gray a managing partner in the now renamed Quinlan Gray & Co. In 1887, Gray amalgamated his company with E. and N. Fitzgerald to form a public company, the Castlemaine Brewery and established its premises in Milton with Gray being managing director in 1924.
The name of a small town in Southland originally known as Longridge was changed to Balfour to avoid confusion other New Zealand localities of that name. It is uncertain whether the new name refers to an employee of the Waimea Company who lived locally, or the provincial engineer. When Eleanor Catton started working on her novel The Luminaries, she used the Papers Past website of the National Library of New Zealand to find suitable names for her characters, set during the time of the West Coast Gold Rush (1864–1867). Balfour was active on the West Coast during that time, and it is assumed that Catton adopted his surname for the character of the shipping agent Thomas Balfour, who represents Sagittarius in the Man Booker Prize-winning novel.
Sabine was born in Bury St Edmonds, Suffolk to John Sabine and Adelaide Isham Sabine (née Eppes) and emigrated with his parents, two brothers and two sisters aboard the barque Derwent, arriving at Port Adelaide in March 1853 He worked for several years as Clement Sabine & Co., customs and shipping agent, then from 1857 to 1894 as Adelaide agent for pastoralist and absentee landowner Price Maurice (1818–1894), who had sheep runs near Coffin's Bay and was largely responsible for the rise of Angora goat farming and breeding in South Australia. Properties managed by Sabine for Maurice included Pekina, O'Laddie. Tarcowie, Warrow, Lake Hamilton, Branfield, and "the ill-fated" Mt. Eba station. In 1900 he left for South Africa, to investigate purchase land there post-war, concluding it was hopeless.
Hartshorne was employed as a shipping agent in San Francisco and another partner Captain Alfred H. Wilcox, who was an experienced sea captain, was taken on for his experience in the hazards of the Colorado River Delta. The company brought the disassembled side-wheel steamboat General Jesup to the Colorado River Delta and assembled it with a more powerful 70 hp engine. There Johnson began successfully shipping cargo and carrying passengers on the Colorado River from its estuary, up to Fort Yuma. This steamboat carried 50 tons of cargo to the fort in 5 days and brought the cost to supply the fort down to $75 a ton from the $500 a ton it cost to ship cargo overland across the desert from San Diego. The route made the Company $4,000 per trip per ship in the estuary of the Colorado River.
SS Great Britain in 1853, after her refit to four masts Antony had taken a share in his uncle's shipping business, which on George Snr's death was renamed Gibbs, Bright & Co. of Bristol and Liverpool, with partners George Gibbs Jnr (managing), William Gibbs and Robert Bright. The firm acted as the shipping agent for various companies, including the "Great Western Steam Shipping Company", whose fleet included Isambard Kingdom Brunel's . After she ran aground west of Ireland, the firm acquired her and fully refitted her, running her for the next 30+ years on the Anglo- Australian run as an emigrant liner. In 1882 Great Britain was converted into a sailing ship to transport bulk coal, but after a fire on board in 1886 she was found on arrival at Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands to be damaged beyond repair.
In October 2010, O'Keefe joined the "Road to Hope", a humanitarian aid convoy to Gaza. Organizers were seeking to transport the convoy from the port of Derna, Libya to el-Arish, Egypt on board the private-charter roll-on/roll-off ferry M.V. Strofades IV, which left port unexpectedly without any of the aid after the ship's owners and captain got into an argument with the aid workers, although seven Libyan port officials and ten of the Road to Hope team were on board. Organisers of the convoy claimed that despite paying a shipping agent for the charter of the ship, O'Keefe and the others were "kidnapped" from the port by the owner and the captain of the ship who "went nuts". The ship owners claimed that the activists had boarded the ship without any contract or charter.

The twelve men inform Walter Moody about the events that have happened leading up to the current night. Crosbie Wells, a hermit of no ordinary notice, was found dead in his cabin, from an apparently peaceful death.
The barquentine Ailsa Craig was built for Handyside and Henderson in 1860 and lost at sea in 1865 The sinking of the SS Utopia 1891 eyewitness painting The company began in 1855 when Captain Thomas Henderson from Fife became a partner in the shipping agent firm of N & R Handyside & Co, of Glasgow who operated a few sailing vessels. This resulted in the formation of the company Handysides & Henderson with the aim of establishing a New York service. At first they only operated to India under sail, in 1856 the company advertised it was to begin transatlantic sailings and the sailing ship Tempest was sent to Randolf and Elder, to have 150 horsepower compound steam engines installed In October of that year the first Anchor Line service to New York set sail. Unfortunately, the following year the Tempest was lost at sea.
B & O stock certificate, 1903 Steamboats began to see strong competition from the railroads after the post-Civil War replacement of the rail lines, and after a brief episode of poor health in 1870, Hinde sold his interests in the river navigation business and turned his attention to railroads.
