Our Mutual Friend refers to a Charles Dicken's novel, and is a visual example of MacLeod's interest with satire, and disembodied parts.

Several of the original team developed successful careers at the ABC: Mark Colvin hosted ABC Radio National's current affairs show PM; Jim Middleton hosts Newsline with Jim Middleton on ABC Television; and Ros Cheney became Arts Editor of ABC radio until her dismissal in 2001 (during the controversial regime of Jonathan Shier). 2JJ's programming policies were considered a radical departure from the formats of commercial stations. In 2005 Austin published a recollection from Colin Vercoe, one of the station's first music programmers: "In those days it was the early disco stuff and if it was black they just wouldn't play it." 2JJ was also a pioneer in terms of its coverage of local music.

Sunderland's name is thought to come from Charles Spencer, the Third Earl of Sunderland in England. He was the Secretary of State, and he helped move Palatine German families to London and then, with Queen Anne's aid, to Ireland in the early 18th century. Many of the men in these families had ancestors who fought for Britain in the American War of Independence in 1776 and in the War of 1812 in the New World, and so, in 1818, after the wars, for their efforts, they were granted free land in what was to become Brock Township, Ontario. These early Palatine settlers included surnames like: Shier, Baker, Bagshaw, Switzer, Lowe, St. John, Lodwick, Brethour and Doble.

In 2006 Shier expanded Broadway Bound, creating Broadway Bound Fine Arts and Entertainment to include a Fine Arts Division to orchestrate the acquisition of a wide range of art works, paintings, sculpture, and photography, for indoor and outdoor installations. These installations include large-scale projects in public places, intimate exhibitions, as well as artwork for residential spaces and premium hotels worldwide. Among Shier’s recent projects is the creation and development of the Pride of Canada Carousel, a multimillion-dollar fine art carousel commissioned by the Remington Group, that is the artistic centerpiece of Downtown Markham, a new city, outside Toronto, Ontario. The Pride of Canada Carousel opened to great critical acclaim on Canada Day, July 1, 2016.

During a forty-year career in music, he formed two record companies, Chiaroscuro RecordsChiaroscuro RecordsAll about Jazz and Hammond Music Enterprises,Hammond Music Enterprises built two recording studios (WARP and Downtown SoundDowntown Sound ), produced over 200 jazz LPs/CDs and - in conjunction with his business partner, Shelley M. Shier and their production company, HOSS, Inc. - over 100 music festivals (The Floating Jazz Festival,Whitney Balliett, The New Yorker, February 8, 1988 pp. 82-89Oren Jacoby, Travel and Leisure, January 1997, pp. 8-11 The Blues Cruise, Mardi Gras At Sea,Whitney Balliett Big Bands At Sea, and others from 1983–2002), published a number of books and articles on jazz, photographed most of the giants of jazz from the second half of the 20th Century, exhibited these photographs regularly, and served on the boards of various non-profit organizations that serve the jazz community, including the Jazz and Contemporary Music Program of The New School (1985 to present), The Jazz Foundation of America (1993 to present) and more recently the Jazz Gallery (1995 to present) and the National Jazz Museum in Harlem.

194 & 223 O'Brien opposed the Howard Government's budget cuts to the ABC, and said the appointment of John Shier as its Managing Director was a manifestation of the "conservative obsession with the ABC as a kind of biased, left-wing culture". After retiring from the 7.30 Report, O'Brien presented the 2013 ABC series, Keating: the Interviews from which he wrote a biography of former Labor Prime Minister Paul Keating, who co-operated with O'Brien, rather than write an autobiography. O'Brien welcomed the replacement of Liberal Prime Minister Tony Abbott by the less conservative Malcolm Turnbull in 2015, telling Fairfax that it was "a little burst of sunlight nationally..." and that "There's a surge of relief because things were so bad"Kerry O'Brien stepping down as host of ABC-TV's Four Corners , Sydney Morning Herald; 16 November 2015. In his 2019 induction speech to the Logies Hall of Fame, O'Brien voiced his support for the Uluru Statement from the Heart and called on the Australian Parliament, during the current term, to "make a genuine effort to understand and support what is embodied in the Uluru Statement From the Heart".
