Darcy Lever (c. 1759 – 1839) was a nineteenth-century British author and expert in seamanship, most well known for his work The Young Sea Officer's Sheet Anchor: Or a Key to the Leading of Rigging and to Practical Seamanship. The book, first published in 1808 with a second edition in 1819, became the standard authority on traditional rigging and seamanship throughout the century.

Lincoln's redefinition of republican values has been stressed by historians such as John Patrick Diggins, Harry V. Jaffa, Vernon Burton, Eric Foner, and Herman J. Belz. Lincoln called the Declaration of Independence—which emphasized freedom and equality for all—the "sheet anchor" of republicanism beginning in the 1850s. He did this at a time when the Constitution, which "tolerated slavery", was the focus of most political discourse. Diggins notes, "Lincoln presented Americans a theory of history that offers a profound contribution to the theory and destiny of republicanism itself" in the 1860 Cooper Union speech.

In spite of the availability of carbamazepine and valproate, physicians practicing in Mediterranean countries still preferred phenobarbital. Other medications were seen as not usually necessary. Phenytoin was to be used as adjunctive therapy only. Sheet Anchor, his only publication, was written as a reference for general use by young officers in the East India Company and the Royal Navy, and is well known for its detailed engravings which illustrate each concept addressed in the text. Lever himself never served in the Navy, and had little direct experience with sailing; his book is largely the result of extensive research he conducted himself, including multiple interviews with experienced seamen. During the Napoleonic Wars, however, Lever served as Adjutant to the North Battalion of the Leeds Volunteers. In his memoir, former U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant says he read Lever's work while at West Point.

" In 1921, Pike went to work for old friend Harry Bruce Wolfe at British Instructional Films on the single-reel series Secrets of Nature series. His inaugural film for the series was The Cuckoo's Secret (1922), commissioned by Edgar Chance, which changed public perception of how common cuckoos reproduce by providing the first proof that they lay their eggs directly in the nests of the species they parasitise rather than laying them on the ground and carrying them to the nest. Over the course of the next 11 years, Smith blended "nature photography with painstaking laboratory work," on the series, "providing an atmospheric account of British wildlife," which filmmaker, historian and critic Paul Rotha described in 1930 as "the sheet anchor of the British film industry.

Braithwaite is best known as the constructor of one of the earliest successful forms of diving bell. In 1783 he descended in one of his own construction into the wreck of the Royal George, which had gone down off Spithead in the August of the previous year, and recovered her sheet anchor and many of her guns. In the same year, and by the same means, he recovered a number of guns sunk in the Spanish flotilla off Gibraltar. In 1788, again he made a descent to the wreck of the Hartwell, an East Indiaman, lost off Boa Vista, one of the Cape Verde islands, and recovered dollars to the value of £38,000, 7,000 pigs of lead, and 360 boxes of tin.

Melville described the crew complement of the frigate warship, United States, as about 500—including officers, enlisted personnel and 50 Marines. Towards the close of the long French war, Paget, while cruising in the Endymion on the coast of Spain, sighted a French ship-of-the-line in imminent danger, embayed among rocks upon a lee shore, bowsprit and foremast gone, and riding by a stream cable, her only remaining one. Though it was blowing a gale, Paget bore down to the assistance of his enemy, dropped his sheet anchor on the Frenchman's bow, buoyed the cable, and veered it athwart his hawse. This the disabled ship succeeded in getting in, and thus seven hundred lives were rescued from destruction. After performing this chivalrous action, Endymion, being herself in great peril, hauled to the wind, let go her bower anchor, club-hauled and stood off shore on the other tack.

Approaching the final furlong the filly accelerated sharply, settled the race in two or three strides and won "without the semblance of an effort" by a length from Hornsea and Sheet Anchor, with Preserve in fourth place. She became the first Oaks winner to add a success in the St Leger and was the only winner of Epsom classic to take the race between Champion in 1800 and Surplice in 1848. Cambridge, England ; Melbourne : Cambridge University Press] Kable did much to pioneer sealing and shipbuilding in New South Wales, working with Simeon Lord who marketed the skins and James Underwood who built the ships. Like Lord and other early Sydney entrepreneurs, Kable always had a substantial landholding as a kind of 'sheet anchor'. He had been granted farms at Petersham Hill in 1794 and 1795, and in the latter year bought out four near-by grantees within a week of their grants being signed. In 1807 he owned at least four farms of about 170 acres (69 ha); in 1809 in addition he held five farms at the Hawkesbury and 300 acres (121 ha) at the Cowpastures, with a variety of real estate in Sydney itself including his comfortable house and extensive stores.

The MCC continued south to play Victoria in Adelaide. Hutton won the toss and decided to bat with Trevor Bailey as his opening partner. This made sense in that "Barnacle Bailey" was a negative stonewaller and unlikely to give his wicket away, but it robbed the lower order of its sheet-anchor. In 1958-59 Ashes series he would be the regular opener and was blamed for paralysing the England batting with his slow scoring, though this was hardly his fault. On this occasion he made 60 and put on 97 with Hutton (41) before both were removed by the veteran all-rounder Sam Loxton (2/54). Nobody bettered his analysis though three others took 2 wickets, but Len Maddocks took three catches and ran out Colin Cowdrey for 79. Tom Graveney made 48 as the MCC were out for 312 on the rain affected second day. Taking advice from his old coach Alf Gover, who was in Australia as a journalist covering the series, Tyson stopped using his laborious 38 yard run up and returned to the "short" 18 yard run up he had used for Knypersley in the Staffordshire League with ten short then ten long final strides.
