At a fairly young age he was shanghaied onto a seagoing freighter where he sailed the icy seas of the North Atlantic. It was a number of years before he found an opportunity to make a successful escape. He ventured to St. Joseph, Missouri where he was employed as a hostler by Fish and Robidoux in 1859.

Harry wins, and after the rodeo the boys go to a cafe where they imbibe too freely in the flowing wine and fall asleep. Harry finds himself robbed and with the others shanghaied and aboard a ship. They mutiny and Harry becomes the captain.

Thomas King, a barque of 346 tons, built for the West Indian sugar run, was taken to Australia for the gold rush. Captain J. H. Walker, with a crew shanghaied with the help of local police, after the original English crew had deserted for the gold fields, left Sydney on 4 April 1852 for the Philippines and China with a cargo of sugar and spirits. It wrecked on a reef east of Cato Reef, Queensland, 17 April 1852. The barque struck the reef and became a total wreck.

Carmen the Serpent is a monstrous, one-eyed sea serpent who lives in the Evil River, who is "evil" according to a sea-captain. The sea- captain fools the Bagges under the false promise of a luxury cruise, only to reveal that he actually shanghaied them to sail through the Evil River to find and hunt down Carmen. The sea-serpent kidnaps Muriel and takes her to her cave and starts singing opera to her. Courage comes to Muriel's rescue, only to realize that Carmen was not trying to harm Muriel.

Professor Robert Fairlie of Massachusetts University ponders that question when he is shanghaied and taken to Morrow Base, America's spaceport, in New Mexico. At Morrow, with three other linguists drafted into the project, he learns that an American expedition to Gassendi crater has made a discovery which US authorities are keeping secret — machinery, documents and speech recordings left over from a battle thirty thousand years before. The four men have been brought to Morrow to translate the extraterrestrial language.

According to Barrier, Beans made one last appearance in Shanghaied Shipmates (1936), a short film directed by Jack King. It was to be the last animated short featuring either Beans or the rest of the cast of I Haven't Got a Hat, with the exception of Porky Pig. Bismarcks escape into the swirling mists of the Atlantic prompted orders which sent Tuscaloosa to sea immediately. Most of the crew on liberty at the time could not be rounded up in time, so the ship set out for the hunt with personnel "shanghaied" from and Quincy and a group of reserve ensigns who happened to be on board for a reserve cruise.

As described in a film magazine, Elizabeth Blake (Calvert), who has been reared in the country since she was a foundling, is lured to her ruin by an unscrupulous landlord's agent. She runs away to the city and, after many adventures, is rescued by The Salvation Army and made a member of their order. When her county lover Luke (Anderson) finds her, she is about to embark for France, so he enlists in the army in the hope of meeting her in Europe. Harry Hammond (O'Brien), a son of wealth who has scorned The Salvation Army, is shanghaied and taken to London, where a representative of the order persuades him to enlist in the aviation corps.

As a child of nine, Agnes Sam's great-grandfather had been 'shanghaied' into indentureship and brought to Durban in 1860 on the Lord George Bentinck II. Sam was thus born into an Indian family in Port Elizabeth, and grew up there, near the family business. She was educated at a Roman Catholic school in Port Elizabeth. There the Indian experience was never mentioned in history lessons: Sam went on to study Zoology and Psychology at the National University of Lesotho, and trained as a teacher in Zimbabwe. "Shanghaied" originally aired on Nickelodeon in the United States as a television special titled "You Wish" on March 9, 2001. In the special, viewers who tuned in can vote by telephone or online for who gets the wish at the end of the episode. After SpongeBob received the most votes, the original episode proper had SpongeBob get the wish, and Patchy then featured what would have happened if viewers voted for either Squidward or Patrick. For every subsequent broadcast of the episode, SpongeBob is the official character selected to get the wish, while the segments featuring Patchy the Pirate are trimmed down to remove any reference to the original polling feature of the episode.

Rosamund intercedes to save his life, and following the death of Lionel they are married.

The world and rules of the game played out in Conestoga Hill; for example when two pieces of the Amulet were connected, a new character or weapon would be summoned. Four human characters learned of Mark's double life including his best friend Chuck Mugel, girlfriend Kat Adams, school teacher Mr. Cheseborough who comes to the belief that the characters are aliens, and Mark's cousin Ashley. Another character who is aware of the goings on is Duff Kent, the owner of the carnival who is shanghaied into being a minion for Lord Fear. An ongoing story was the love triangle between Ace and villain Lady Illusion, who was Lord Fear's mistress throughout the first season but betrays him in the finale.

Port Gamble S'Klallum and Lower Elwha S'Klallum members tell of Tribal Gatherings, ceremonies, and ancestral canoe burials, as well as regular trapping, hunting, and fishing endeavors going back far beyond the first documented visits made by European explorers to Point Hannon in the 1790s, and continuing to the present day. Shanghaied crew aboard inbound clippers, loggers, and other freighters were waylaid at Whiskey Spit so that they would not escape, and they were replaced by Native crews for the remainder of the sail into Puget Sound and back.

Set in Boston in the 1820s, the film tells of dancing teacher Jonathan Pride, shanghaied by pirates and forced to be a slave aboard his own ship. Jonathan is able to join a provisioning party that lands on the coast of California, then a part of the Spanish Empire where he makes his escape; his only possessions being his umbrella and music box that he uses for his dancing lessons. He is seen by a shepherd who warns the nearest town whose excitable population transform Jonathan's arrival into a full-fledged pirate invasion. The Alcalde Don Emilio Perena leads the militia into shooting up their own town whilst Jonathan is later captured in the boudoir of the Alcade's daughter Serafina.

The series follows the adventures and endeavours of the title character and his various friends in the underwater city of Bikini Bottom. The first usage of the daxophone in a musical work was the release of Hans Reichel's album The Dawn of Dachsman in 1987.The Daxophone Even with Hans Reichel's second album featuring the daxophone, Shanghaied on Tor Road: The World's 1st Operetta Performed on Nothing but the Daxophone, the instrument had remained very obscure. It was not until after his release of Yuxo: A New Daxophone Operetta that the daxophone began to gain notability through the internet, spawning YouTube videos and inspiring other artists such as Michael Hearst to create their own albums featuring the daxophone. Even today, the daxophone remains fairly obscure, and as such it has not been mass-produced, requiring any aspiring daxophonists to build their own.

Bill is a farmboy on a small backward agricultural planet who is drugged, hypnotised, then shanghaied into the Space Troopers and sent to recruit training under a fanged instructor named Deathwish Drang. After surviving boot camp, he is transferred to active duty as a fuse tender on the flagship of the space fleet in battle with the Chingers, a small reptilian race who are, in Trooper propaganda, portrayed as being 7 feet tall. Before the battle one of Bill's fellow troopers, known as Eager Beager, is revealed to be an android operated from within by a Chinger, who is in fact only 7 inches tall. Injured and with the fleet almost destroyed, Bill accidentally fires off a shot from his ship's main gun.

When the duo next see him, they're convinced he's the ghost of the "dead" sailor and run around the deck shrieking in terror. Meanwhile, the shanghaied sailors have been plotting revenge against the duo for shanghaiing them and decide to sneak back aboard the ship to clobber The Boys during the captain's absence. When they get to the ship and see Laurel and Hardy running, they begin to pursue them—only to be stopped when they see what they're running from: the drunken sailor covered in whitewash, which they too mistake for a ghost and jump overboard shrieking in terror. Captain Long returns with a barfly (Mae Busch) whom he has talked into joining him, only for her to recognize the whitewashed sailor as the husband who'd deserted her years ago.

In San Francisco in the 1850s, a city where gold fever has left shipowners short-handed, Bat Morgan, a sailor come ashore is robbed and nearly shanghaied aboard another ship. Managing to escape, he sticks around town to pay back those responsible and then to take a cut in the action in the vice district. Organizing the various gambling houses (and other forms of vice implied but, for Code reasons, not explicitly stated) into a consolidated enterprise in alliance with a corrupt city boss, Jim Dailey, he comes into conflict with a crusading newspaper, run by Jean Barrat, the daughter of the late murdered publisher, and Charles Ford, the idealistic editor. Loyal to his friends, even when they are on the other side, Bat Morgan protects the editor, when Jim Dailey orders him eliminated.

The involuntary colonists cause much trouble, knowing nothing but a welfare state existence in government ghettos (called Welfare Islands), where drugs, booze and entertainment, paid for by the productive members of society ("Taxpayers"), keep them pacified. Shanghaied to the colony worlds by the Bureau of Relocation ("BuReLock") in an attempt to keep Earth's population down, they gather in city centers and shanty towns, reverting to their parasitical or criminal lifestyles depending on their personal inclinations. While some convict and involuntary transportees do assimilate into their new planets' societies, most band together against the original colonists of whatever world they end up on. Political parties always form to demand a consumer-oriented welfare state, ostensibly to promote social fairness but with agendas meant to advance the welfare state at the expense of the productive.

Blogging on the 2009 cyber attack on Google, Joe Stewart of SecureWorks referred to a "persistent campaign of 'espionage-by-malware' emanating from the People’s Republic of China (PRC)" with both corporate and state secrets being "Shanghaied" over the past 5 or 6 years. The Northrop Grumann report states that the collection of US defense engineering data through cyberattack is regarded as having "saved the recipient of the information years of R&D; and significant amounts of funding". Concerns about the extent of cyberattacks on the US emanating from China has led to the situation being described as the dawn of a "new cold cyberwar".

The law in the United Kingdom does allow people to use copyrighted material for the purposes of parody, pastiche, and caricature without infringing on the copyright of the material. Copyright owners are only able to sue the parodist if the work contains hateful or discriminative messages.

As his powers and use of powers already suggest in the series, Ben is an Avataric Creature of Light. An early draft of Carnivàle, which consisted of diary entries by Benjamin "Ben" Hawkins, summarized his childhood as growing up on a run-down farm with his mother and grandfather in the belief that his father had died in World War I. After both his grandfather and mother had died from cancer, he was "shanghaied by a group of carnies" in 1930. In a later version closer to the actual series, Ben left his mother's farm at age sixteen and fell into a criminal life in Texas. After receiving a twenty-year sentence in a state prison-farm for a failed bank robbery, Ben planned his escape to return home to his sick mother, but he accidentally killed a prison guard who drew a gun on him.

The plot has some initial similarities to Captains Courageous by Rudyard Kipling in that they each have an idle, rich young man rescued from the sea and shanghaied into becoming a working sailor; however, the two stories differ widely in plot and moral tone.

Born John Preston Cheatham on December 28, 1894, in Jackson, Mississippi, he began acting in the 1920s, including two Broadway appearances. In 1928 he would appear in the successful Diamond Lil, written by and starring Mae West. Cheatham entered the film industry with his performance in a featured role in 1931's Shanghaied Love, starring Richard Cromwell, Noah Beery, and Sally Blane. Notable films in which Cheatham appeared include: The Whole Town's Talking (1935), starring Edward G. Robinson and Jean Arthur; The Petrified Forest (1936), starring Leslie Howard, Humphrey Bogart, and Bette Davis; Frank Capra's 1936 comedy, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, starring Gary Cooper and Jean Arthur; the classic Meet John Doe (1941), directed by Capra and starring Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck; Alfred Hitchcock's 1942 suspense drama, Saboteur, starring Priscilla Lane and Robert Cummings; the 1946 comedy, The Kid from Brooklyn, starring Danny Kaye and Virginia Mayo; and another Danny Kaye and Virginia Mayo vehicle, 1947's The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.

Celtic Music began as a publishing outlet for four books of Irish session tunes compiled by Dave Bulmer and Neil Sharpley in the 1970s, with the term first appearing on "Music from Ireland Volume 2" from 1976. It evolved into a record distribution company (CM Distribution) for other labels and then into a recording and record production operation from 1978 to around 2007 that was owned by Dave Bulmer in Leeds and Harrogate in Yorkshire, England. As well as issuing its own recordings, Celtic Music also acquired the back catalogue of other folk music record labels when the latter were on-sold, including Leader, Trailer, Rubber Records, Black Crow, Dambuster, Highway, Sweet Folk and Country, Greenwich Village, Mulligan, Broadside, Folk Heritage, and Making Waves, the majority of which, however, have not been re-issued. The first release on Celtic Music was the self-titled album by the band Iona in 1978, while the last was Tich Frier's Shanghaied in 2007.

Previously, he had written two other radio dramas – Lifestyles Of The Trapped and Cabbaged and Shanghaied and Shipless. He is a co-director of Hurricane Films along with business partner Sol Papadopoulos, and the pair produced their feature film Under the Mud, followed by the Terence Davies documentary Of Time and the City (for which the duo received a BAFTA nomination). Hurricane are lined up to produce two further Davies films – announcing Sunset Song (starring Peter Mullan and Agyness Deyn) at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2012 and A Quiet Passion (starring Sex and The City’s Cynthia Nixon) at the Toronto Film Festival, later that year. Boulter was appointed as Creative Director The Museum Of Liverpool’s Immersive exhibition - ‘Kicking And Screaming’ – a film about the City’s passion for football. Hurricane Films went on to win the tenders for two further immersives at the museum - an exploration of the early lives and career of The Beatles, made in collaboration with Apple Corps Ltd and ‘The Power And The Glory?’ an interpretation of how the growth and decline of the British Empire created and then almost destroyed the city of Liverpool.
