The game was one of few chances and a clash of styles between Roma's tiki-taka and the home side's counter-attacking football. Only Antonio Mirante's shakiness in the Parma goal from long shots appeared to be a route to goal in the first half, but the side from the capital struck early in the second half through a well-placed Dani Osvaldo header. Although Parma had more chances as the game went on, Osvaldo's effort was the only goal of the game, leaving Parma with 13 consecutive winless games against Roma. The following week, Genoa came to Parma led by ex-Parma manager Alberto Malesani as Parma looked to put an end to their indifferent early season form and Genoa went in search of a second win at the Tardini on their twentieth visit.

The criteria date back to the 1930s, when a few patients with hypoglycemic symptoms (such as shakiness, syncope, or sweating) due to hypoglycemia were found to be cured by surgery to remove an insulinoma, but a large proportion of people with symptoms suggestive of hypoglycemia apparently had no need of surgery. Diagnostic testing was rudimentary; beyond a crude assay for reducing substances as an indirect measure of blood glucose, no way had yet been found to measure hormones and metabolites such as insulin, with no imaging procedures for internal organs such as the pancreas. Allen O. Whipple was a well-known surgeon who had pioneered pancreatic surgery. In an article entitled "The surgical therapy of hyperinsulinism", in J Internat Chir 3:237-276 (1938), he proposed that no pancreatic surgery to look for an insulinoma be performed unless these criteria were met.

GRIs can induce a wide range of psychological and physiological effects, including a general and subjective alteration in consciousness, dizziness, blurry vision, diplopia or double vision, nystagmus or involuntary eye movements, amblyopia or "lazy eye", tinnitus or "ear ringing", sedation, drowsiness or somnolence, narcolepsy, tiredness or weakness, fatigue or lethargy, aches and pains, headache, nausea and vomiting, gastrointestinal disturbances, shakiness, disorientation, diminished awareness, impaired attention, focus, and concentration, decreased drive and motivation, stuttering and slurring of speech, confusion, cognitive and memory impairment, mood lift or drop, depression, anxiolysis, disinhibition, stress reduction, euphoria or dysphoria, irritability, aggression, anger or rage, increased appetite and subsequent weight gain, ataxia or impaired coordination and balance, muscle relaxation, trembling or muscle tremors and spasms, paresthesia or "pins and needles", analgesia, respiratory depression, and dyspnea or shortness of breath, among others. However, many of these properties are dependent on whether the GRI in question is capable of crossing the blood-brain-barrier (BBB). Those that do not will only produce peripheral effects. GRIs such as CI-966 have been characterized as hallucinogens with effects analogous to those of the GABAA receptor agonist muscimol (a constituent of Amanita muscaria (fly agaric) mushrooms) when administered at sufficient doses.
