In 1984, the Dogmatics released their first and only single to date on their own label "Cat records": 'Gimme the Shakes' on the A-side and the Eddie Cochran classic "20 Flight Rock" on the B-side. This little know single garnered lots of local airplay on WMBR, WERS, and other local college radio stations. In 1985, the Dogmatics signed with Homestead Records and released their first album, "Thayer Street", one of the highest selling records to date on Homestead records. April 15, 2012 Jones performed in Germany on April 18, 2012 at the Alter Wartesaal—the old waiting room of Cologne's main station, Köln Hauptbahnhof—a concert that was presented by the WDR. It was broadcast on radio and the music television show Rockpalast (on May 21). On April 25, she appeared in Later... with Jools Holland show alongside Jack White, Alabama Shakes, Grimes, The Chieftains, Carolina Chocolate Drops and The Secret Sisters where she performed three songs of the album: "Say Goodbye", "Happy Pills" and "Little Broken Hearts".Jack White, Norah Jones, Grimes and Alabama Shakes On Jools Holland Jones also announced some tour dates as promotion for the album.

Vázquez Mota was born in Mexico City on 20 January 1961. Her parents, Arnulfo Vázquez and Josefina Mota, are from the Sierra Norte de Puebla region of Mexico, and she has seven brothers and sisters. She says she is closest to her sister Lupita. When they were children they use to sell chocolate shakes on the street with a blender Josefina received for Day of the Magi. Vázquez Mota spent the first five years of her childhood in a working- class neighborhood called Colonia 20 de Noviembre in Mexico City and began her education in public school, starting at “La Patria es Primero” school in the Azcapotzalco borough. Her father originally wanted her to attend an all-girls high school, even paying a full year’s tuition in advance.

Inspired with a new vision of things to come, some changes in the band were made. Ahmad enlisted a roster of talent that would position the group for refinement and growth: his wife, Tena Jones on vocals, Tim Stewart aka "Timmy Shakes" on lead guitar, Gailybird on violin, "Phat" Albert Parker on bass, and Derrick "Dee" Calloway on drums. Their eclectic use of rock-influenced sounds atypical for hip-hop music, especially guitars, was most evident on their first album after leaving Interscope, 2003's compilation Gumbo which introduced the public to their new members, with several band members performing solo tracks on the album. In 2004, 4th Avenue Jones released their fourth independent album HipRockSoul, and the next year, they released their first Gotee Records-distributed album, titled Stereo: The Evolution of HipRockSoul containing re-mastered and re-mixed tracks from the HipRockSoul album as well as several new songs.
