The rotunda provides a shady retreat for garden visitors and an elegant platform for band concerts or other performances. The structure was erected in 1914 to a design by Alfred Foster, architectural assistant to the City Engineer. It is similar to the rotunda in New Farm Park also designed by Foster and constructed in 1915.

In the afternoon of December 15, police descended on a home in Pennsburg where they believed Stone had barricaded himself; however, he was not there. At around 8:00 p.m., Stone was reportedly sighted in Doylestown. Police were called to an attempted carjacking near the area of North Shady Retreat Road and Burpee Road.

Since summer heat fades only in the evening and the light lingers relatively late, this cool shady retreat remains a local hot spot into the night. Another regional summer attraction is the town's annual festival in July–August. The festival, or moussem, features traditional music, theater and fantasia as well as a wide display of local artisans' products. Numerous local painters, potters and craftsmen put their stock up for sale, but the marquee item is sure to be Bzou's own high quality djellaba material, made entirely by hand with traditional methods, exclusively in this region.

Distinguished by tall mature trees, the park provides a shady retreat for travellers off the busy highway. The grassed area between the carpark and the van area accommodates a picnic shelter, toilet block, concrete water tank, a scatter of concrete picnic tables and seats and the entrance to the Jowarra Walking Tracks. The picnic shelter consists of concreted coursed rubble stone walls with projecting piers to each corner and the doorways. Standing on a concrete slab floor, the shelter is protected by a timber framed gable roof clad with corrugated metal sheeting.

In 1796 Nathaniel Kent wrote:Spooner :Lord Petre has planted with great taste and success 700 acres at Buckenham House ... the park which is in the midst of a barren, dreary country, forms an agreeable shady retreat, covered with pleasant verdure richly ornamented with forest trees of large dimensions. In 1790 the parliamentary constituency of Thetford, in which Buckenham Tofts lay, was a rotten borough controlled by the two largest local landowners, the 4th Duke of Grafton, who was also the Recorder, and the 9th Baron Petre, disbarred from serving in public office due to his religion.

The spaces thus formed were provided as a shady retreat in the "trying summer months". A verandah was also erected on the rear of the timber classroom extension in 1900, although this section was again extended in 1903–1904 with the erection of another lecture hall. A Recreation Club was established in one of the rear timber buildings and this was furnished with billiard tables and assumed the role of the smoking room on the first floor of the main building which was converted into a reference library. The next major alteration occurred in 1907 when Bundaberg architect, Frederic Herbert Faircloth was commissioned to design a gallery in the library of the School of Arts.
