When Quint and Brody return to sea the following day, the shark begins attacking the boat. After Quint manages to harpoon it several times, the shark leaps out of the water and onto the stern of the Orca, tearing a huge hole in the aft section which causes the boat to start sinking. Quint plunges another harpoon into the shark's belly, but as it settles back into the water, Quint's foot becomes entangled in the rope attached to the harpoon, and he is dragged underwater to his death. Brody, now floating on a seat cushion, spots the shark slowly swimming towards him; he closes his eyes and prepares for death.

After his avowal of love, and her failure to make a similar declaration, Bazarov proceeds to his parents' home, and Arkady decides to accompany him. At Bazarov's home, they are received enthusiastically by his parents, and the traditional mores of both father and mother, who adulate their son, are portrayed with a nostalgic, idealistic description of humble people and their fast-disappearing world of simple values and virtues. Bazarov's social cynicism, invariably on display with outsiders, is still quite clear as he settles back into his own family's ambiance.

When he decides to go to Scotland, Father Christmas is initially happy to enjoy whisky and wearing a kilt, but hates the weather he deals with on his arrival, and trying to swim in a nearby loch that has cold, shark-infested waters. He eventually settles on spending his holiday at a luxurious casino resort in Las Vegas, and quickly enjoys his stay - he dines on good food, enjoys the resort's pool, and has fun enjoying the night life. After spending all of Summer at the hotel, he soon is forced to return home when kids begin questioning his identity, especially after noticing he is running low on funds and racking up a huge hotel bill. Upon returning home, Father Christmas settles back into his house, before heading to the kennels to pick up his pets.
