Being locked up is barely an inconvenience for an AI unless we first install artificial wanderlust that cannot be ignored or disabled by the AI on its own (and it would be systematically difficult to make this a foolproof solution, given the presumed cunning and self-knowledge of the AI); and dismantling an AI (either a robot or a bedridden agent like Watson) is not killing it if the information stored in its design and software is preserved.

Just as a practicing Christian may create and obtain new forms of self-knowledge through confession, prayer and the observance of Lent, a sports fan can come to understand himself as a particular sort of person — a Southerner, for example, or a "real man" — by adhering to certain rituals, like reading the sports page and watching ESPN every day to gather more and more knowledge about his team, by talking with other fans about that team in the right ways (and proving that he knows more than them), by learning and participating in the songs, chants, dress, tailgate rituals, game-day traditions and home décor choices of its fans.

Today, as Rory MacDonald prepares for his new life as a fighter in Bellator—the biggest name that promotion has yet managed to tease away from the UFC, arguably the first truly great fighter in his prime to make the move—it seemed right to honor the man we watched grow from a boy before our eyes, the man we watched change his nickname countless times in a quest for self-knowledge, from the Waterboy to Ares to the Red King (though always in our minds Canadian Psycho: the People's Psycho!), the man raised by and in MMA (a terrifying notion), the flagbearer of a new generation of fighters who came into the cage not as specialists but as mixed martial artists all the way, a true child of MMA, by remembering not his greatest triumph as a fighter (his three suplexes of Nate Diaz, perhaps?
