The name "Cenerentola" comes from the Italian word "cenere" (ash, cinder). It has to do with the fact that servants and scullions were usually soiled with ash at that time, because of their cleaning work and also because they had to live in cold basements so they usually tried to get warm by sitting close to the fireplace.

In his Tableau de Paris Louis-Sébastien Mercier describes the characteristics of the manservants (lackeys) of pre- revolutionaryy Paris. "An army of useless servants is kept entirely for show"; he observes that the presence of these servants in the capital has left the countryside rather empty. A tax-farmer's household consists of 24 servants in livery, besides scullions, kitchen maids and six lady's maids. Some lackeys would adopt the manners of their masters and affect a similar mode of dress.

Scullion became an influential figure in the Jesuit order, successfully lobbying for the creation of a Theological College in his home state of Victoria. He went on to become Professor of New Testament and Scripture at that college and was invited to preach at various functions around Australia. Scullions published works include, The Theology of Inspiration (1970), Genesis: A Commentary for Students, Teachers, and Preachers (Old Testament Studies) and Isaiah 40-66 (1982). Following a long battle with cancer Scullion died in 1990.

Nencio thinks he now understands the reason for Filippo's anger, but Vespina reappears now as the Marquis de Ripafratta, saying that although he promised to marry Sandrina he wouldn't marry below his station and will therefore trick her into marrying one of his scullions. Harrison, the man behind the Skullions slavery and the company itself, captures Sky and Luke and locks them up, separate from Sarah Jane. Sky throughout shows compassion towards the Skullions and revulsion at what was done to them, and tries to persuade one when he delivers food and water to them. She thinks of the idea to use K9's dog whistle to broadcast a Morse code message to Mr. Smith, who passes it on to Clyde and Rani. She helps free the Scullions, but has to operate the Serf hologram along with Luke when Harrison retrieves his pen controlling the Skullions torturing devices.

The administration of the külliyye rested upon the administrative officers also under the chief eunuch in the department of harem at Topkapi Palace (Ottoman Sultans primary and official palace of residence).Goodwin, 2008 Among the administrative officers, the külliyye also had "religious officers and teachers, porters, chanters, grave diggers, servants responsible for maintenance, including the polishing of courtyards and window grilles, cooks, scullions, plumbers, lamp-lighters, a guard against the theft of oil lamps, carpenters, masons and tillers responsible for the lead sheets covering over 500 domes". The staff magnitude illustrate the sophistication of the külliyye; though it began with a simple concept, it had developed and become complex that a magnitude of staffs and officers were needed to manage it. The kitchen was responsible for feeding the staff and officers, as well as the students, travelers and the poor.
