The Panther's 75 mm gun could penetrate the IS-2 model 1943's mantlet from , turret from , and driver's front plate from . From the side, the Panther's armour was penetrable by the 122 mm D-25T from over . The Panther carried more ammunition and had a faster firing cycle: for every 1–1.5 shots of the IS-2, the Panther and Tiger could fire 3-4 times. With the addition of a semi- automatic drop breech over the previously manual screw, this breech modification increased the IS-2's rate of fire to 3-4 rounds per minute. The IS-2 proved to have surprisingly good anti-tank capabilities due to the D-25T's extremely heavy HE projectiles.
