El-Sayed said the group isn't meant as a precursor to another campaign — but that he does plan to mount another run for office in the future.
Still, among El-Sayed supporters, there is a lingering perception that Whitmer is of the Michigan establishment and, as such, won't be able to deliver for them.
VICE News spent time in Michigan with El-Sayed to see how the Democrat is responding to the attacks and handling his religion on the campaign trail.

"There was a reading and an academic discussion and then there was a huge bang," said Sayed Jan, a participant in the conference, from his bed in the hospital.
El-Sayed was endorsed by Sanders and campaigned recently with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the young democratic socialist whose shocking, recent New York primary upset made her a movement star.
As Vox's Ella Nilsen reported over the summer, some supporters of El-Sayed sought to portray Whitmer as a centrist, establishment candidate, but others said the label never really fit.
"American forces in Afghanistan, and in this specific case in Helmand, are in the role of train, advise and assist," said Sayed Zafar Hashemi, a spokesman for President Ashraf Ghani.
"The reaction in equity markets was muted after the data release, probably because much of the positivity has already been priced in," said Hussein Sayed, chief market strategist at FXTM.
"With no updates so far on the case, expect the stock to remain on a roller coaster," FXTM Chief Market Strategist Hussein Sayed said in a note on Tuesday morning.

Sayed Fazel Sancharaki, an adviser to Mr. Abdullah, said that there was "no deal behind the curtains," and that the two leaders were united in disapproving of the parliamentary dismissals.
With backing from Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and rising Democratic star Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, it seemed possible Michigan gubernatorial candidate Abdul El-Sayed could become the country's first Muslim governor.
Bawadden Sayed, a spokesman for the progressive campaign-finance-reform group End Citizens United, says Twitter's ban makes it harder for the group to reach a younger, more diverse audience.
"We know what will happen to Hakeem if he is sent back," said Sayed Ahmed al-Wadaei, director of advocacy for the Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy in London.

Two of the left's brightest current stars, Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, campaigned in Michigan with Abdul El-Sayed, who aimed to be the first Muslim governor in America.
"There are a couple of reasons why he will do well in Virginia and North Carolina," former Michigan guernatorial candidate and progressive activist, Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, told The Hill.
"If the contraction in manufacturing activity translates to weakness in the far larger services sector, then it's time to get seriously worried," said Hussein Sayed, chief market strategist at FXTM.
El-Sayed had never run for office before his campaign for governor, and he lost the primary to former state Senate Minority Leader Gretchen Whitmer, 52 percent to 30 percent.
"This is a dirty action, as people who enter the palace are innocent," Ahmad al-Sayed, Syria's attorney general, said of the attack at the building, the Palace of Justice.
Karzai used to pay the family of a power broker named Pir Sayed Ahmed Gailani more than a hundred thousand dollars a month in "expense money" to keep its support.
"We still don't know how this political conflict will end, but it will no doubt create downside risk to the single currency," said Hussein Sayed, chief market strategist at FXTM.
Separately, Mohibullah Mohib, a spokesperson for Farah provincial police in western Afghanistan, said Mullah Sayed Azim, the Taliban's shadow governor for Anar Dara district, had been killed in a raid.
"They travel on ordinary flights to these countries, they travel like an ordinary person," said Sayed Akbar Agha, a former Taliban commander now living in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan.
The next test of the electoral power of progressive Democrats will be in Michigan, where health director Abdul El-Sayed is vying to become the country's first Muslim American governor.
El-Sayed has backed a state-level, single-payer healthcare system that the front-runner in the race, former state Senate Democratic leader Gretchen Whitmer, has said is not realistic.
"A mass trial cannot produce a just result and rendering people stateless in a mass trial is a clear violation of international law," institute Director of Advocacy Sayed Ahmed Alwadaei said.

Others, like Fayaz Nawabi, whose family came to the US from Afghanistan as refugees, and Abdul El-Sayed, an Egyptian-American doctor, are vying for positions at the state and local level.

Reality check: El-Sayed has been polling in third place, but activists hope Ocasio-Cortez's visit, plus an endorsement from Bernie Sanders, could give him the boost he needs to pull off an upset victory.

After the Michigan Secretary of State said the Shelby Township Democrat was eligible last week, the Court of Claims ruled Thursday that the lawsuit El-Sayed filed, asking the court to confirm his eligibility was dismissed.
Whitmer would get 22017 percent of the vote, while Ann-Arbor area businessman Shri Thanedar would get 22 percent, and Dr. Abdul El-Sayed , the former director of the Detroit health department, would get 19 percent.

As usual, the festival will include a strong international focus, with writers from Australia (Helen Garner), Chile (Lina Meruane), Denmark (Dorthe Nors), Israel (Sayed Kashua), Mexico (Álvaro Enrigue) and Nigeria (Okey Ndibe), among many other places.
The minutes were even more hawkish than what investors were expecting, with some suggesting pushing rates into "restrictive territory," in other words, beyond their neutral rate, FXTM Chief Market Strategist Hussein Sayed wrote in a note.

By June, when Mr. Abdel-Sayed became aware of a criminal investigation, he tried to cover up his crimes, the authorities said, by telling the undercover investigators to "take the fifth" if they were asked about the classes.
Over the midterms in 2018, Smidt pointed to the poor performance in these precincts by Sanders-backed gubernatorial challenger Abdul El-Sayed, who lost to the eventual governor, Gretchen Whitmer, by 22 percentage points in the Democratic primary.

"I like to think that even though I'm not going to get the opportunity to serve, now we've ignited a belief of what's possible in young people," Michigan gubernatorial candidate Abdul El-Sayed told supporters after losing his August primary.
But both those candidates won in very blue areas; Gillum is running at the state level in a place that voted for Donald Trump, much like another Sanders-backed candidate, Abdul El-Sayed, who recently lost the Michigan gubernatorial primary.

In 2018, Whitmer -- whose campaign slogan was "Fix the damn roads" -- defeated the Sanders-endorsed Abdul El-Sayed in the gubernatorial primary, and went on to trounce her Republican opponent by 9.5 percentage points just two years after Trump had won the state.

El-Sayed said that a universal healthcare system would allow the government to directly allocate resources to facilities to avoid overflow instead of private hospitals and insurance companies asking for a chunk of funding included in part of a major bailout package.
