In 1973, West married Rosemary Anne Linington Childs; they have two sons and one daughter. In a 1976 radio interview, Wilson said the song expresses "the need to have the freedom to live with somebody ... The idea is, the more we talk about it, the more we want it, but let's talk about it anyway. Let's talk it over, let's talk about what we might have if we really got down to it.

Through McFarland & Company and Scarecrow Press, Cox has published more than 15 books, including the recent Radio Speakers: Narrators, News Junkies, Sports Jockeys, Tattletales, Tipsters, Toastmasters and Coffee Klatch Couples Who Verbalized the Jargon of the Aural Ether from the 1920s to the 1980s—A Biographical Dictionary (2007). The book profiles of more than 1,100 “radio speakers,” including Red Barber, H. V. Kaltenborn, Dorothy Kilgallen, Edward R. Murrow, Louella Parsons and Walter Winchell. He later wrote hits for other artists such as Madonna ("Crazy for You"), Michael Jackson ("Human Nature"), The Pointer Sisters ("Slow Hand"), Diana Ross ("When You Tell Me That You Love Me"), Jennifer Warnes ("Nights Are Forever"), Peabo Bryson ("Can You Stop the Rain"), George Strait ("Heartland"), Ronnie Milsap ("Only One Love in My Life"), and Barbara Mandrell ("One of a Kind Pair of Fools"). Bettis also co-wrote, with Albert Hammond, "One Moment in Time", the 1988 Summer Olympics anthem performed by Whitney Houston and, with Steve Dorff, the theme song to the 1980s sitcom Growing Pains, "As Long as We Got Each Other." In theatre, Bettis has provided lyrics for the musicals Lunch (tour 1994); Svengali (1992); The Last Session (L.A. Drama critics Award, Best Musical Score 1998); Say Goodnight (1999); Pure Country (2008) and most recently Josephine (2011).

Yoachim started writing speculative fiction in 2005 and attended the 2006 Clarion West Writers' Workshop. She has been active as an author since 2007 when her first published short story, "Time to Say Goodnight", appeared in the December issue of Fantasy Magazine. She has collaborated on a few pieces with Tina Connolly. A few actors adapted entire novels for the stage including Patrick Stewart who played all 43 parts in his version of A Christmas Carol, which played three times on Broadway and at The Old Vic in London; actor Gerald Charles Dickens played 26 characters in his performances from the same work; and Jack Aranson starred in a solo, 13-character production of Moby Dick.
