The Pursuit of Diarmuid and Gráinne is notable for its similarities to other tales of love triangles in Irish and European literature. It has a number of parallels with the tale of Deirdre in the Ulster Cycle; like Gráinne, Deirdre is intended to marry a much older man, in this case the King of Ulster Conchobar mac Nessa, but she runs away with her young lover Naoise, who is finally killed after a long pursuit. However, earlier versions of Diarmuid and Gráinne may not have been so similar to the Ulster tale; for instance medieval references imply that Gráinne actually married Fionn and divorced him, rather than fleeing before their wedding. Another tale, , includes an episode in which a young wife drugs everyone in her household besides her desired.

She becomes a more prominent character in the Jeonju edition and Sin Jae-hyo edition, and Sim Cheong's father also becomes more important in the plot. This has led some scholars to argue that Sim Cheong's father becomes a main character in the Jeonju edition version, while Sim Cheong is the sole main character in earlier versions of Sim Cheong- jeon. On the way to the feast for the blind that Sim Cheong hosts as an empress, Bbaengdeok's mother falls in love with Blind Hwang and runs away with him, leaving Sim Cheong's father behind. In relation to the appearance of Bbaengdeok's mother, the yangban culture is often discussed as an important aspect shown through Sim Cheong's father, who is depicted as a foolish man who becomes infatuated with a woman and squanders his fortune away.

One of the earliest in English is referred to briefly in Geoffrey Chaucer's The Knight's Tale (1490): ::::We strive as did the two hounds for the bone, ::::They fought all day, and yet their part was none; ::::There came a kite by, while that they were wrath, ::::And bore away the bone between them both. (CT 1177-80) The situation was proverbial and expressed alternatively in English as "While two dogs are fighting for a bone, a third runs away with it". Its Dutch equivalent, Als twee honden vechten om een been, loopt de derde om mee heen,Emanuel Strauss, Concise Dictionary of European Proverbs, Routledge 2013, Proverb 1302 was among those illustrated in Pieter Bruegel the Elder's Netherlandish Proverbs (1559). Honoré Victorin Daumier: Lithograph of La Fontaine's fable, "The Ass and the Two Thieves", 1863 La Fontaine's Fables transformed the story into Les voleurs et l'âne (I.13).
Hogarth enjoys his time with the Giant, but is compelled to explain "death" to the Giant after he witnesses hunters killing a deer. That night, Hogarth is interrogated by Mansley when he discovers evidence of the Giant after finding a photo of him next to Hogarth and brings a U.S. Army contingent led by General Shannon Rogard to the scrapyard to prove the Giant's existence, but Dean (having been warned by Hogarth earlier) tricks them by pretending that the Giant is one of his art pieces. Upset by the apparent false alarm, Rogard prepares to leave with his forces after berating Mansley for his antics. Hogarth then continues to have fun with the Giant by playing with a toy gun, but inadvertently activates the Giant's defensive system, and Dean yells at him for nearly killing Hogarth, and the saddened Giant runs away with Hogarth giving chase.
This is repeated gently on flute, accompanied by harp, and the piece ends tranquilly with snatches of the variant title theme on violin solo, horn and oboe. As the composer said this piece is a "musical illustration to the ballad of the same name", it may be useful to realise that the folk ballad tells the tale of a farmer's daughter who falls in love with a young sea-captain, becomes pregnant and runs away with him to sea, having first stolen money from her parents. When her child is born on board ship, the labour is especially difficult and there is no "woman's help" available. Knowing she will die, she asks her lover to "bind a napkin round my head, then throw me overboard, both me and my baby"Text as noted by Butterworth from Mr & Mrs Cranstone, Vaughan Williams Memorial Library, Cecil Sharp House, London.

He abruptly proposes marriage, which she rejects, both because of an early insult she overheard him make toward both her appearance and her intelligence, and because his cousin Jeorgeullah Wickaam has recounted to Alys how Darsee cruelly cut Wickaam, an orphan, out of the family will. Desperate to regain Alys's trust, Darsee writes her a letter apologizing for his role in keeping Bungles from Jena as well as confiding the true reason for Wickaam's disinheritance: Wickaam had fathered, then abandoned, numerous children out of wedlock with servant women, and, ultimately with Darsee's sister. Family money allows his sister to travel to Europe to seek an abortion, but the lower-income women he had previously fathered children with did not have this option, nor any support from Wickaam in raising their children, so Darsee and family elect to spend Wickaam's inheritance establishing a school for disadvantaged students that his children could also attend. Darsee comes to the rescue again when it is Alys's party- girl youngest sister, Lady, whose reputation is in trouble: she too runs away with Wickaam, who demands to be paid $100,000 to marry her and restore the Binat sisters' good name.
