He died after surgery on 23 April 1914 in his home (no. 3 Romeland). The marriage did not produce any offspring.

The gateway marks the end of Romeland and the start of Abbey Mill Lane. Located next to St Albans Abbey and also next to the bishop's Private Residence (Abbey Gate House) the gateway is a good way to spot Abbey Mill Lane.

The first mayor was John Lockey. In 1555, during the reign of Queen Mary I, a Protestant baker from Yorkshire, George Tankerfield, was brought from London and burnt to death on Romeland for his refusal to accept the Roman Catholic doctrine of transubstantiation. During the English Civil War (1642–45) the town sided with parliament but was largely unaffected by the conflict.

It was officially opened by Mrs A. J. Chapman in late 1904. There were originally two arched doorways to the west of the front door for use by a horse-drawn fire engine. The fire engine was mechanised in 1923 and the fire station moved to Romeland after the Second World War. In late 1914, during the First World War, the building was converted for use as an auxiliary hospital.

Work on a fourth – intended to depict the Epiphany – was interrupted by the Second World War and never resumed. In April 1941, a 500 kg German parachute mine exploded in a field nearby at Romeland, destroying most of the windows on the north side of the church. In March 1945, a V-2 rocket landed in Highbridge Street, destroying the "Bellringers Window" in the tower; a detailed hand-tinted photograph of the window, discovered in 2007, may eventually allow the window to be recreated.

In 1184, Henry raised the status of the church to an abbey; he appointed an abbot and the number of canons was increased to 24. The completed abbey was finally re-dedicated on 30 September 1242, by William, Bishop of Norwich. The Holy Cross attracted many pilgrims and the Abbey became a popular place for overnight stays for kings and other notables hunting in Waltham Forest. Henry VIII was a frequent visitor and is said to have had a house or lodge at Romeland, adjacent to the abbey.

After the dissolution of the Abbey in 1539, Richard Boreman, the last Abbot, became Headmaster and the school moved to a chapel near St Peter's church in St Albans after its buildings in Romeland were demolished by Sir Richard Lee for building materials to rebuild Sopwell Priory into a country house.Rickmansworth Historical Society – St Albans dissolution of monastery. In 1549, to put the school on a firmer foundation, the last Abbot was granted the right to maintain a Grammar School by a private Act of Parliament.

The site was officially opened in October 2002 by Prince Richard, The Duke of Gloucester. Woollam's was built on part of a 400-acre farm owned by the school, which also contains a field studies centre used by the school's biology department. In 2003, the school opened a new Drama Department building and theatre in Romeland, on the site of the medieval school's building, called the "New Place". On 7 January 2010, the Herts Advertiser ran an article reporting that a loan of £1000 at the rate of 6% p.a.

Skeat's parents lived at Romeland Cottage, adjacent to St Albans Cathedral (which prior to 1877 was the church of St Albans Abbey, which in turn had been founded nearly 1100 years earlier in 793 by Offa, king of Mercia). Shortly before Skeat was born, a Swedish maid, Hilma, was climbing the stairs to go to bed when she felt the presence of something close to her; she was then pinned against the wall and her candle went out. In the darkness she saw a figure wearing a cowl who spoke to her in a strange tongue, later identified as Latin. The figure quickly vanished, leaving Hilma deeply shocked.
