The Motor Cycle road tested a Black Prince and concluded that it handled as well as the Vincent Black Shadow with improved fuel consumption.
The album was produced by John Leckie, of The Stone Roses and Radiohead fame, and was recorded at RAK studios in London as well as Rockfield in South Wales. Four singles were released from the album, "1000 Years", "More than a Lover","Walking in the Winter" and "Two Faces". The new songs had been crafted over a two-year span during which the band fine-honed and road-tested the material. The deluxe version of this album came with a bonus CD of 5 additional songs.
The Struggle received positive reviews from critics. AllMusic's Steve Leggett noted how "This set was road-tested live, with the band urging audience members to sing along on the choruses, and those varied audience contributions are actually here on the record, a sort of massed fan choir for the band. The result is Tenth Avenue North's best release yet." CCM Magazine's Andy Argyrakis gave credence to the fact of the band "had no trouble connecting with Christian music's masses" with respect to this album.
Open Live is the first live album by Australian musician Dan Sultan. The album was recorded at the National Theatre, Melbourne on 21 March 2015 during Sultan's Blackbird tour and released in November 2015. Upon announcement Sultan said "In case you missed my Open Live shows recently, we recorded a live album of these intimate and unique shows, where I even road-tested some new songs". In July 2016, the album was nominated for Album of the Year at the National Indigenous Music Awards 2016.
The Daily Blam called the book, "a refreshing new addition to the genre and well deserving of all five stars" while Guerrilla Geek said "...this book works on a subtle level of genius." Echert is currently Creative Co-Director of the independent comic publishing company Evil Ink Comics, helping with development of the ongoing, New York Times Bestselling science fiction comic series, The Amory Wars. Whilst the 1982–1983 brochure showed Goodyear Eagle tyres fitted, an Avon Roadrunner rear and Speedmaster front tyre went on production models, the tyres' lettering picked out in white. Although the German magazine Motorad road-tested a kick start-only version, the kickstart was an optional extra on the production TSX. The standard TSX engine was a T140ES (electric start) with two 32-mm Bing carburettors and electronic ignition. The engine was offset to accommodate the fatter rear tyre within the frame which also necessitated a unique swingarm and abbreviated chromed chainguard.
Stainless steel rear cowl and top of Tomahawk, with handlebars connected to a vertical stalk. At the Walter P. Chrysler Museum, Michigan. As introduced in 2003, the one-of-a-kind Tomahawk was operational and road-ready, but not fully road-tested, and acceleration and top speed were not confirmed; Dodge described the vehicle both as "automotive sculpture," intended for display only, while also saying it was "rideable". DaimlyerChrysler spokespeople declined Popular Sciences requests to test the Tomahawk's performance, or to speak to the company's test riders, or to share those riders' riding impressions.
In 2006, Strange Famous Records added a lot to its catalogue. They included not only Sage Francis items (such as Life is Easy and Road Tested), but items from people who work closely with SFR, including Solillaquists of Sound, B. Dolan, Grand Buffet, Sole, Alias, Reanimator, Prolyphic among others. Buck 65's album Situation which was produced by Skratch Bastid was released on Strange Famous Records on October 30, 2007. dan le sac vs Scroobius Pip's album Angles was released in the United States and Canada on SFR in 2008.
"Road Tested" (2003–2005) is a live album by Sage Francis. It is a compilation of tracks recorded from the Live Band Dead Poet Tour (with Gruvis Malt, 2003), the Fuck Clear Channel Tour (with The Gimme Fund, 2004) and the 2005 tour with Sol.iLLaquists Of Sound. Some of the tracks recorded with Gruvis Malt in 2003 appeared on Francis' previous live album Dead Poet, Live Album, however the versions appearing on this album have been cleaned up, featuring basslines performed by Mikal kHill (of The ThoughtCriminals) or Arit Harvanko.
Production ended in April 1960, but had slowed to a trickle long before. An open car was tested by The Motor magazine in 1958 and was found to have a top speed of , acceleration from 0– in 9.1 seconds and a fuel consumption of was recorded. The test car cost £1,283 including taxes of £428. Oddly, an open MGA Twin Cam (index PMO 326), road tested by The Autocar magazine in its 18 July 1958 edition only recorded a 0-60 time of 13.3secs with the standing quarter mile of 18.6secs.
In the case of American Motors (AMC), these included appearance modifications such as grilles, tail lights, trims, or interiors that were fabricated in clay, fiberglass, wood, or plaster. These experimental vehicles were road tested in anticipation of consumer demand and regulatory changes. Designs were tested in these cars in response to customers and drive reports, as well as to include better solutions like making the ashtray and cigar lighter more user friendly. Automakers put new technologies in endurance or motor sport contests to test their use in extreme conditions before incorporating them in production cars.
A 14/60 four-door four-light saloon was road tested by The Times. Head clearance was described as moderate but it was felt there was good width and leg room for two persons in the back seat and the doorways gave "reasonable entrance". Interior fittings included three electric lights, two-way visors, a sliding roof, three ashtrays, an instrument board with large dial clock and speedometer, a telescopic spring steering wheel, wholly automatic chassis lubrication, a jacking system and a windscreen which could be wound out to give a direct view.Cars Of To-Day.
A six-cylinder car was road tested by Britain's Autocar magazine in March 1975 at the time of the model's launch. It recorded a maximum speed of 104 mph (167 km/h) and reached 60 mph (97 km/h) from a standing start in 13.5 seconds. The top speed was marginally lower than the 109 mph (175 km/h) achieved by a recently tested Ford Consul 2500 L and a full three seconds slower to 60 mph than the Ford which managed the standing start test in just 10.4 seconds. The 2200 also fell slightly behind the Fiat 132GLS 1800 in these comparisons.
Since its release in 1989, Nick of Time has currently sold over five million copies in the US alone. Raitt followed up this success with three more Grammy Awards for her next album, 1991's Luck of the Draw, which has sold 7 million copies in the United States. Three years later, in 1994, she added two more Grammys with her album Longing in Their Hearts, her second no. 1 album, that has sold 2 million copies in the US. Raitt's collaboration with Don Was amicably came to an end with 1995's live release Road Tested.
After touring with Lords of Acid, Jack Off Jill headed to Los Angeles in order to complete 1998's Covetous Creature, a remix EP of songs from Sexless Demons and Scars with the help of SMP (Scott Putesky), a founding member of Marilyn Manson and new drummer Claudia Rossi. The new manifestation of Jack Off Jill hit the road on a national tour with Psychotica, joined along the way by Switchblade Symphony. The band road-tested new songs in March 1999 when JOJ played four dates on the Marilyn Manson Rock Is Dead Tour after Hole departed.MTV.com: "/ MTV news March 22, 1999 ".
Allman felt Leavell's style of playing fit the album perfectly: "He'd give you exactly what you wanted, without any questions, and if he embellished on a song, he made it even better." Unlike with the Brothers, none of the songs were performed live—or "road-tested"—before their release, with the album's eight songs being developed and arranged in the studio. The experience recording the album was a pleasurable one, according to all involved. Talton, reflecting in 2019, said the chemistry between the musicians were at a high, which he attributed to the fact that he, Boyer, and Leavell lived together during production.
Upon leaving Sony in 2000, Moe revived Fatboy Records and issued its second live album, L. In 2001, Moe launched the Warts & All series of complete live performances, released as multi-CD sets. Six such volumes were released between 2001-2008, on Fatboy Records, before the series was retitled Dr. Stan's Prescription, for two further volumes. 2001 also saw the release of Dither, which featured several road-tested originals as well as a cover of "In a Big Country", by Scottish rockers Big Country, while 2002 brought forth the Christmas album, Season's Greetings From Moe., featuring two original seasonal songs as well as several holiday standards.
An electric wheel motor concept that struck a chord with Quebecers, first prototyped in 1994 by Pierre Couture, an engineer and physicist working at IREQ, is one of these. The heir to the Couture wheel motor is now marketed by TM4 Electrodynamic Systems, a spin-off established in 1998 that has made deals with France's Dassault and Heuliez to develop an electric car, the Cleanova, of which prototypes were built in 2006. Hydro- Québec announced in early 2009 at the Montreal International Auto Show that its engine had been chosen by Tata Motors to equip a demonstration version of its Indica model, which will be road tested in Norway.
" However Bill Wyman of The Chicago Reader gave the album a very harsh review, calling it "the worst piece of [expletive] you can imagine coming from a talent on Springsteen's level." Out of the album's 14 tracks, Wyman said there was only "one passable Springsteen song, 'The Long Goodbye.' The lyrics don't make much sense...but it has a bruising musical onslaught that covers up a lot." Though his initial review was more positive, Greg Kot of The Chicago Tribune later wrote that "in retrospect, Human Touch tried to re-create the stadium-rocking aura of an E Street album, with session musicians unsuccessfully replacing the road-tested band.
People In Planes were in pre-production for their second album for Wind-Up records since they returned from the States in late 2006. They took a period off to rehearse new material and played a string of UK shows in late 2006 and early 2007 where they road-tested new material. New song titles include: "Baked", "Evil With You", "Get On The Flaw", "Human Error", "Better Than Life", "I Wish That You'd Fall Apart" and "Tonight (The Sun Will Rise)" On 7 February 2008 People In Planes released "Pretty Buildings", the first song from Beyond the Horizon as an internet download through MySpace and the band's mailing list. > Hey people.
The band announced in December 2007 that a short tour was planned for February 2008, with only five dates in different small club venues around the UK. Shortly after, they would start recording their sixth studio album. Singer/songwriter Fran Healy said he would like to record the entire album in two weeks,Fran Healy Album 6 - Blog 1 having been inspired by the speed and simplicity of their recent recording session with Beatles engineer Geoff Emerick while participating in a BBC programme celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Sgt. He proceeded to drive it several more miles back into town without stopping. His trip convinced him that the vehicle was worthwhile and could become a valuable enterprise, although he was disappointed in the vehicle's handling and decided he needed to improve the steering system and find a way to divert the motor's exhaust smoke away from the carriage. Haynes' car is believed to be the second gasoline-engine powered vehicle successfully road tested in the United States, according to its exhibit information at the Smithsonian Institution. It was built two years before Henry Ford's Quadricycle, and preceded only by Charles Duryea's Motorized Wagon less than a year earlier.
The Matchless Model X was developed for V-twin enthusiasts and had a specially reinforced rear frame for heavy-duty sidecar work. At the end of 1936 the Model X was upgraded and rebranded the Sports Tourist, with a shorter wheelbase frame which improved roadholding and steering. The Motor Cycle road tested the Model X in May 1937 and noted that the steering was light but even when cruising at over it did "not become so light as to necessitate-use of the damper." Performance of the engine was described as "delightful" and although not a sportster it was capable of and could reach from a standing start in a quarter of a mile.
The coupes were not available in large numbers, but are collected by enthusiasts. They were hard to sell as gas consumption is high compared to the 4- and 6-cylinder cars the Argentinian consumer is used to. In 1903, their Cleveland wareroom became a dealership for the new Buffalo Electric automobile, and within two years, they were manufacturing their own electric vehicles which had been road tested by Joseph Rothgery, who had just celebrated his 50th anniversary with the firm. Initially only a Stanhope was available, but by the end of 1905, a number of coupes and depot wagons had been manufactured, 50 vehicles in all. Many of the Rauch & Lang Electric's non-coachbuilt components were sourced from Cleveland's Hertner Electric Co. and following a $175,000 recapitalization, Hertner Electric became part of Rauch & Lang in 1907. Charles E.J. Lang's family was associated with the Lakewood Realty Co., whose president, Charles.
The Karma was praised on the British television series Top Gear for its looks and hybrid technology while being road-tested by presenter James May and special guest, AC/DC front- man Brian Johnson. Johnson noted that it is probably one of the first production cars that actually looks like the concept version that is sketched beforehand, saying, "It's a cracking looking jam-jar". May noticed similarities in the hybrid-powertrain to his own idea that was used in a segment for Top Gear a few years earlier (The Hammerhead Eagle i-Thrust), though he admits that his idea was very crudely executed. He joked that Fisker would be hearing soon from his lawyers.
In the Regional and Rural portfolio, The Trust partnered with the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (F.R.R.R.) on Disaster Resilient: Future Ready, a pilot program seeking to establish a road-tested model of community-led disaster preparedness after discovering a gap in resilience and adaptation indicators for natural disasters and critically, limited evaluation of effective methods for communities and individuals to build their resilience. In the Young People portfolio, The Trust piloted the Get Into program in 2017. Modelled on a similar program at Prince's Trust UK, the Get Into program worked with emploers in hospitality, retail, construction and logistics to support young people to develop sector-specific and employability skills.
AMC backed up the rust protection of the Concords with a new five-year "No Rust Thru" transferable warranty. This was in addition to the comprehensive "buyer protection plan", a twelve month/ warranty with loaner car and trip interruption protection that AMC introduced in 1972 that covered everything on the car except the tires. Although it was the oldest design and equipped with the biggest engine in a group of station wagons that were road tested by Popular Science, the Concord recorded the best acceleration and fuel economy figures (compared to Chevrolet Malibu, Chrysler LeBaron, and Ford Fairmont). The test and driving report summarized that for many customers, the versatile six-cylinder automobiles like the AMC Concord wagon, were excellent substitutes for full-size cars.
On May 12, 2015, Banditos debuted their self-titled album that was produced by Andrija Tokic, whose work includes fellow southern rock artists Alabama Shakes and Hurray for the Riff Raff. The record was recorded almost all live, and was recorded at Tokic's the Bomb Shelter studio in Nashville. The initial record, made around 2013, was not officially released, was just sold on tour as merchandise, so the Banditos went back into the studio to rework much of the road-tested material, adding a bunch of new songs, which resulted in the official 2015 Bloodshot release. After the album was released, the band was featured in Taco Bell's Feed the Beat campaign, a program that helps feed touring musicians and allows fans to discover new bands.
Early in his career, while serving as a field superintendent at gas and oil companies during Indiana's gas boom, Haynes invented several devices important to the advance of the natural gas industry. When working for the Indiana Natural Gas and Oil Company, he oversaw the construction of the first long-distance natural gas pipeline in the United States, connecting Chicago with the Trenton Gas Field away. He began to formulate plans for a motorized vehicle in the early 1890s; he successfully road tested his first car, the Pioneer, on July 4, 1894—eight years after the first automobile was patented in Germany. He formed a partnership with Elmer and Edgar Apperson in 1896 to start Haynes-Apperson for the commercial production of automobiles.
A circa-1939 postcard touting the GE steam turbine locomotives' "firsts", including first multiple operation of two steam locomotives by a single engineer The locomotives were in operation for six months, among the shortest operational careers in recorded railroading. After being completed in December 1938, they were first tested by GE at its Erie, Pennsylvania facility, then road tested on New York Central tracks between January and March 1939. They were then delivered to UP in April 1939 at Omaha, Nebraska, in time for the 70th anniversary of the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad in May, and given road numbers 1 and 2. According to UP historians William Kratville and Harold Ranks, the new locomotives were hoped to be the "replacement to steam" and the "successor of diesels".
The hybrid program was abandoned, leaving Uhlenhaut to appropriate one of the leftover mules as a company car with only a large suitcase-sized muffler added to dampen its near-unsilenced exhaust pipes. With a maximum speed approaching 290 km/h (180 mph), the 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé easily earned the reputation of being the era's fastest road car. A story circulates that, running late for a meeting, Uhlenhaut roared up the autobahn from Munich to Stuttgart in just over an hour, a 137 mile/220 km journey that today takes two-and-a-half. Uhlenhaut's 300 SLR coupé, in the Mercedes-Benz museum in Stuttgart US auto enthusiast magazine Motor Trend road tested the car, as did two English journalists from Automobile Revue, who spent more than behind its wheel.
After three (official) live albums in a row, the Grateful Dead wanted to record studio versions of songs written since Keith Godchaux had joined the band. At the time of recording, five of the songs on the album (and part of a 6th) had been in live rotation for up to a year and a half, as arrangements were road-tested and finalized. Referring to this period, bassist Phil Lesh explained, "We'd learned to break in the material at shows (under fire, as it were), rather than try to work it out at rehearsals, or in the studio at tremendous expense." The new compositions drew on many of the band's influences, blending genres from country folk and R&B; to ragtime and jazz rock, the latter being more prominent than previously.
Stylus gave the group high praise, stating, "(Erika Wennerstrom) and her two band mates have created an album with more rocking songs and fat hooks than most bands can dream of. It’s not just that they rock, it’s that you believe what you hear, that they love the sound they make, that Wennerstrom lays her soul bare in her lyrics without sounding like Sarah McLachlan, that the women of rock who labored to make it OK for a girl to dream of playing guitar deserve far better than Avril Lavigne or Kelly Osbourne as their descendants." The second full-length album from the band, All This Time, was released on August 8, 2006. The band road tested many of the tracks on the record prior to releasing it and received rave reviews from audiences.
He was the charismatic senior editor of l'Auto-Journal from the creation of the newspaper (later reformatted as a magazine) in 1950, and road tested hundreds of cars, writing his road test reports with elegance and a level of insight which transformed that genre. Costa's writing also celebrated his appetite for automobile expeditions and adventures, such as his drive to Chad in a Citroën SM, a trip he undertook in the remote Hoggar Mountains with a Citroën DS, participation in the Paris-Dakar Rally along with numerous automobile adventures that involved traversing parts of Europe. Costa was also an historian, with a particular focus on the Second World War. In addition to his pure history, he wrote an Alternate history novel, set in the Second World War and entitled L’Appel du 17 juin.
Time-trial bikes provide a significant aerodynamic advantage over standard road bikes. If a rider averages 75–80 minutes to complete a 40 km course on a road bike, using a traditional metal frame, shallow rimmed wheels, and standard road bike components, including a down-tube mounted water-bottle, then switching these road components to the aerodynamic counterparts could shave the following times off their total ride. Positioning Pro and elite level cyclists turn to the wind-tunnels to constantly seek refinement and improvements in their individual time trial on-the-bike positioning. Professionally measured, out-on-the-road tested positioning (arms inwards as much as physiologically possible, knees in pedalling, head and body in better alignment in the time trialing, aero position, etc.) will see as much as a 6-minutes improvement in non-aero or former poor aero positioning.
Beyond the Horizon is the second and final album by the Welsh alternative rock band People in Planes (or third album overall, as their first, 2002's Splendid Animation, was released under their previous band name, Tetra Splendour). People In Planes were in pre-production for their second album for Wind-Up records since they returned from the States in late 2006. They took a period off to rehearse new material and played a string of UK shows in late 2006 and early 2007 where they road-tested new material. New song titles include: "Baked", "Evil With You", "Get On The Flaw", "Human Error", "Better Than Life", "I Wish That You'd Fall Apart" and "Tonight (The Sun Will Rise)" On February 7, 2008 People In Planes released Pretty Buildings, the first song from Beyond The Horizon as an internet download through Myspace and the band's mailing list.
At this time, with several UK auto-producers losing market share, Datsun had grabbed the headlines as the UK's leading car importer. The magazine Autocar road tested a 180B Bluebird and recorded a top speed of 101 mph (162 km/h) along with a 0–60 mph (0 – 97 km/h) time of 13.6 seconds. The Datsun's overall fuel consumption for the test was 27.7 mpg (10.2 l/100 km). For all three of these performance measurements, it was marginally better than the Ford Cortina 1600 GL which continued to dominate this sector in the UK, but both cars were beaten for speed and acceleration (though not for fuel economy) by the relatively crude Morris Marina 1.8HL. It was probably more significant that the Bluebird had a manufacturer's recommended retail price, including sales taxes, of £2950 as against £3263 for the Ford and £3315 for the Morris.
" Weeks said that several of the new album's songs—including "Bloody Sunday," "Hell of a Ride" and the ballad "Angel Without Wings" – have been around for the better part of a year and even road-tested. But like "Addicted," "Miss America's" first single, "Stupid Girl (Only in Hollywood)," was one of the last songs written for the album, shortly after the group's trip to this year's Grammy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles. "There was a little bit of pressure," he recalls, " 'cause we thought we were done and (the label) wanted another single, so we had to go back and write. I had just gotten back from the Grammys, and I read a quote from Marilyn Monroe where she said that a wise girl always kisses before she's kissed...So that's basically how the chorus of the song goes, 'You always kiss before you're kissed/You're not a stupid girl.
The launch of the design for the New Bus for London led to BBC One's The One Show airing a segment on 18 May 2010 reviewing the 100-year history of the London standard double-decker, with John Sergeant reviewing the history of, and riding preserved examples of, the 1910 LGOC B-type, the RT and the original AEC Routemaster. Because of the close connection between British car magazine Autocar and New Routemaster, it was the subject of a road test in December 2011. The magazine said it was "the best in public transport", referring to the vehicle's hybrid drivetrain as "brilliant economy and an interior to die for". The New Routemaster was also road tested by Top Gear's James May in an episode where it left London and drove to attractions such as Cheddar Gorge before returning to the capital to take part in a 'Best of British' vehicle celebration.
"Something to Talk About" is a song written by Canadian singer-songwriter Shirley Eikhard and recorded by Bonnie Raitt in 1990, for her 1991 album Luck of the Draw. It was released to U.S. radio on June 3, 1991. Three single versions were released: the promo b/w the same song; the 7" single b/w "One Part Be My Lover" a song written by Raitt with her then husband actor Michael O'Keefe, which was also off Luck of the Draw; and a 12" single with these two songs and "I Ain’t Gonna Let You Break My Heart Again" off her previous album Nick of Time. In turn, this song was included on the EP version of Raitt’s 2000 single of "The Fundamental Things" taken from her 1998 album Fundamental. It was also included in 2003’s greatest hits compilation The Best of Bonnie Raitt. Live versions also appeared on 1995’s Road Tested and 2006’s Bonnie Raitt and Friends.
The number '250' in its name was intended to indicate a gross loaded weight of 2½ imperial (British) tons, implying a substantial carrying capacity of 22 cwt. When road tested by Britain's Autocar magazine, a 250 JU vehicle converted into a 4,180 lb motor home achieved a maximum speed of 58 mph (93 km/h). The testers thought the van a big improvement over the J2 which it replaced, but found it remained "clumsy to drive" with the "need for constant expertise to overcome its faults": engine noise, especially above 40 mph (64 km/h) was a particular source of criticism. Following the formation of the British Leyland Motor Corporation in 1968, into which BMC, by then a subsidiary of British Motor Holdings, had been absorbed, the van was branded as the BMC 250 JU. It was then rebadged again in 1970 as the 'Austin Morris 250 JU', finally ending production in the wake of the Leyland Sherpa, with which it shared some components, in 1974.
The first 4-cylinder test engine was so badly damaged that it actually changed the shape of the engine block to the point where the crankshaft would not move. As around 4 months had been lost in trying to get the 4 cylinder engine to work, Ford and Cosworth's plan for the engine to debut with Haas Lola in was pushed back to the 1986 season. The GBA engine was first road tested by Haas Lola's lead driver, World Champion Alan Jones in the new Lola THL2 at the Boreham Circuit in Essex just north-east of London on 21 February 1986. In freezing, snowy conditions (−6° Celsius) at approximately 10 AM, the V6 turbo, running a conservative 2.5 BAR boost setting, ran cleanly although the engine management electronics developed by Motorola in the United States and Cosworth had not yet been finalised and the engine ran with the same electronics that were used on the dynamometer.
Several changes came for 1993, when Scoupes got a facelift, including the current Hyundai "H" logo, new flush headlamps plus body-colored side moldings and redesigned front sheetmetal, taillights, and rear bumper. The Base and LS models came with a new and improved, In-house manufactured, 1.5L 12-valve, direct-port fuel- injected engine, called "Alpha". The 1,495 cc Alpha, with a bore and an stroke, produced at 5,500 rpm and of torque at 4,000 rpm in naturally aspirated form, with a 10:1 compression ratio, and at 5,500 rpm and of torque at 4,500 rpm when turbocharged, with a 7.5:1 compression ratio. Turbos came only with 5-speed manual shift, while Base and LS models could have an optional 4-speed automatic. The Australian spec S-Coupe GT Turbo has been road tested by several Australian magazines, returning times of 9.2-9.3 secs for 0–100 km/h and 16.8 secs for the 0–400 m dash. Facelifted rear of Hyundai Scoupe Hyundai says the Scoupe was the first production application for Garrett Automotive Products' T15 turbocharger, which was new for the early 1990s. The turbo unit includes water-cooled bearings and housings and an integral wastegate.
Victorian Railways promotional poster advertising the new Spirit of Progress service The Spirit of Progress racing an Airco DH.4 aeroplane between Melbourne and Geelong on 17 November 1937 The Spirit of Progress ushered in a standard of passenger train speed and comfort not previously seen in Australia. Its introduction in November 1937 marked the culmination of many years of preparatory work by the Victorian Railways, from the laying of heavier rail on the North East line, introduction of Automatic Staff Exchange apparatus to allow continuous high speed running between track sections, introduction of high-powered three-cylinder Pacific locomotives, and the testing of air conditioning equipment on passenger rolling stock. Such was the commitment of VR Chief Commissioner Harold Clapp to introducing a world-class train service to Victorian Railways, virtually no detail was overlooked. VR engineers famously road-tested the new train's smoothness on curves by studying a full bowl of soup in the dining car as the train took curves at full speed; if the soup splashed over the side of the bowl a decision would be taken whether to modify the curve for higher speeds or reduce the speed limit for the curve.
A decidedly back to basics effort, however with much sought after producers Chris O' Brien (Aslan, The Stunning, Something Happens) and Graham Murphy (Westlife) at the helm. The album's opener, with Holden on lead vocals, "Hand me Down my Bible" was a road tested winner, written by Phil Coulter, complete with a brand new 3rd verse given to the band especially at Holden's request. Schooldays Over, another Holden vocal is next, creating a 'Wham-Bam' effect and setting up the listener for what was to come. Schooldays had been recorded apparently, at the insistence of a friend of Holden's who convinced him it would be a hit. After performing the song on the mammoth RTE 100 year Rising celebration called "CENTENARY" and also yet another appearance on RTE'S "The late Late Show" the song immediately entered the Top 10 on various iTunes charts around Europe and the US and became an immediate radio hit. Released on 13 May, with songs such as 'Grace' 'Nancy Spain' 'Spancil Hill' and a foot to the floor version of 'Kelly from Killane', the album was a surefire hit across the board.
The first single from the album "Burning For No One", was debuted by BBC Radio 1 on 2 February, by Zane Lowe who made it his 'Hottest Record in the World'. The accompanying video, shot on the Bahamian island of Exuma was released on 16 February and clocked up over 200,000 views on YouTube in its first week. The new songs were road tested on a quick UK tour of sold- out shows, and then the band went to New York City to play a 3 night residency across 3 different venues (2 in Brooklyn, 1 in Manhattan), before heading to Austin, Texas for the annual SXSW showcase, playing 4 shows across 3 days. Immediately after returning from SXSW, The Cribs embarked on a week-long tour of in-store performances and signings at independent record stores throughout the UK. US touring began a few weeks later in San Francisco for a tour of the west coast, and would include a second appearance at the Coachella Festival, playing the Sunday of both weekends and playing headline shows throughout the state and Las Vegas in the intervening week.
