The 170th Group (170 GP) grew out of Detachment 1 of Headquarters Nebraska Air National Guard, which was established in June 2002. It gathers members of the Nebraska Air National Guard stationed at Offutt Air Force Base into a single administrative unit as part of the "Future Total Force Initiative." Through this initiative, Guard instructor aircrew integrate with the 338th Combat Training Squadron (338 CTS) to provide initial qualification, requalification and upgrade training to active duty USAF and Air National Guard aircrew members in the RC-135 RIVET JOINT, COMBAT SENT and COBRA BALL aircraft and the E-4B NIGHTWATCH aircraft. These instructors are assigned to the 238th Combat Training Squadron.

On 1 May 1972, the 560th was reactivated as the 560th Flying Training Squadron at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas, and took over the mission of training Northrop T-38 Talon instructor pilots for Air Training Command's Undergraduate Pilot Training bases. After 1973, all repatriated Vietnam era prisoner of war (POW) pilots physically able to return to active flying duty came to the 560th for requalification training. As the final chapter in Operation Homecoming, the squadron returned more than 150 active duty pilots to flight status. Over the next two years the 560th flew more than 6000 hours and established a lasting bond that it still maintains with these former POWs.

In 1995-1996, he received an honorable mention from Colorado State University in the International Small Home Competition; in 1997, he won the Architecture competition at the Academy of Architecture, Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles. Focusing his attention on the requalification of the environment, many of his works are involved in promoting the identity and memory of his native territory. In 2004, he designed Valente Jewellers' main shop in the famous Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in Milan, with the intervention of Aaron Demetz, thus launching into an international activity that has led him to found the design and communication company Gianmarcocavagnino Srl.

In 1925, the authorities of Milan started a requalification project for the area surrounding the Basilica of San Lorenzo and the nearby Colonne di San Lorenzo (a double colonnade that is one of the major Roman ruins in Milan). At the time, the area had marshes of polluted water produced by the tanneries located in the adjacent Piazza della Vetra, as well as old buildings in a state of decay. The area was cleared in 1934, but it was only after World War II that it was actually redesigned as a green public space. Architects Pier Fausto Bagatti Valsecchi and Antonio Grandi, enrolled in 1956, conceived the new park as a sort of archaeological promenade connecting the two basilicas, the Colonne di San Lorenzo, and the ruins of a Roman amphitheatre.

Lucas Grandin’s work aroused the passionate interest of the inhabitants of the district, creating a place for socializing and contemplation and covering the urban cacophony inside its water walls. During SUD 2010, the artist engaged the inhabitants of Bonamouti in the production process of the work though preparatory meetings, the requalification of the area (used before as dumpster on the edge of the river), and the building structure.

The project includes a major parkRequalification projects for Portello (in Italian) called Parco VittoriaParco Vittoria (in Italian) and what will become the largest plaza in MilanPortello, la Milano dei grandi spazi (in Italian) (20,000 m²),Al Portello la piazza più grande di Milano (in Italian) as well as commercial, service and housing infrastructures. The name of the district comes from the "Strada del Portello" (Portello road), an ancient rural road that used to connect Milan to Rho, and that was later replaced by the new Strada del Sempione ("Simplon Road") leading to the Simplon Pass; the old Portello road is now known as "Via Traiano". In turn, the road was named after the Portello city gate, that was part of the city walls and that was located in the surroundings of the modern Cadorna railway station.

After the informal period, Somaini started to give to his sculptures symbolic meanings (Portals, 1967): Organic forms were put in a continuous dialectic relationship with architectural geometric volumes; this visionary research culminated in the cycle of Carnificazioni di un’architettura (1974–1976). Starting from the conviction that sculpture shall have a role in the requalification of the urban architectural context – opinion matured between 1958 and 1972, during informal experiences made on a big scale in Italy and in the United States – the sculptor formalized his own ideas, both at a theoretical and utopist level, in a series of project studies (Enrico Crispolti, Francesco Somaini, Urgency in the city, Mazzotta, Milan, 1972). Parallel to these studies on the relationship between sculpture, architecture and the environment, Somaini experimented a personal technique of direct carving executed by using a high pressure jet of sand. This approach became a fundamental component of his plastic language from 1965 onward.

Smaller statues of the Cat and the Fox characters from Collodi's book were part of the complex, but have since been partially vandalized. The pedestal on which child Pinocchio is standing bears an inscription by Milanese poet Antonio Negri (1881–1966)Antonio Negri and based on a line in Collodi's book, reading: In 1989, several prefabricated shopping stalls were placed in the traffic lane where the fountain is located, thus making it less visible than it used to be. Thereafter, the fountain has experienced a long period of decay, as the interior of the traffic lane has been used as a rubbish dump and repeated vandalisms have occurred; most notably, the statue of the Cat was stolen, and the nose of Pinocchio has been broken. In 2004, a parliamentary question was directed to the Ministry of Culture complaining about the state of decay of the fountain; also, a spontaneous local committee has formed to promote the requalification of the area.
