During his long reign, Mercia became the dominant kingdom of the Anglo-Saxons, and recovered the position of pre-eminence it had enjoyed during the strong reigns of Mercian kings Penda and Wulfhere between about 628 and 675. When Æthelbald came to the throne, both Wessex and Kent were ruled by stronger kings, but within fifteen years the contemporary chronicler Bede describes Æthelbald as ruling all England south of the river Humber. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle does not list Æthelbald as a bretwalda, or "Ruler of Britain", though this may be due to the West Saxon origin of the Chronicle. St. Boniface wrote to Æthelbald in about 745, reproving him for various dissolute and irreligious acts.

Known as Daguenet the Fool / the Coward, an utterly lousy and hapless knight that people constantly make fun of, he "captures" (and actually rescues) the great hero Lancelot by leading his horse to Queen Guinevere. During the False Guinevere's reign in another work, Les Prophecies de Merlin, Dagonet, loyal to Arthur and still known as the fool, takes on the administration of the royal court entrusted to him. He bankrupts the household, even killing the treasurer Fole for reproving him, yet ultimately proves to be competent enough to finance the mercenaries who help Galeholt repel a Saxon invasion, all while successfully avoiding the vengeance of Fole's kinsmen.

After he received from Pelagius a confession of faith, together with a new treatise on free will, Zosimus held a new synod of the Roman clergy, before which both these writings were read. The assembly held the statements to be orthodox, and Zosimus again wrote to the African bishops defending Pelagius and reproving his accusers, among whom were the Gallic bishops Hero and Lazarus.

Following the fall of the Arab Kingdom of Syria, Faisal made his way via Haifa (1 to 18 August) to Italy, arriving in Naples on 25 August 1920. En route, 'Abd al-Malik al-Khatib, the Hejaz representative in Egypt, gave Faisal a letter from Hussein saying that Faisal should only discuss policy with the British government and only on the basis of the McMahon-Hussein correspondence while also reproving Faisal for "declaring a separate kingdom and not being content to remain as Hussein's representative". According to the director of the Arab Bureau, reporting on the discussions between Faisal and 'Abd al-Malik, in regards to Iraq "...If the British government wished him to go he was ready either as ruler or as regent for Abdullah..."
