Planes such as the Frankfort horizontal plane or sella-nasion plane have their own drawbacks. The anatomical points that these planes are based on are not known to be stable over time, which may lead to variability and error in studying the cephalometric analysis of a patient. For example, the nasion-sella line which part of our anterior skull is used as a reference line for lateral cephalometric radiographs. The nasion point is known to be move anteriorly and inferiorly over time and thus can lead to an error in the values that are used to study the maxillo-mandibular relationship to the cranial base in lateral cephalometrics.

Twenty-five diverse corn lines were chosen as the parental lines for the NAM population in order to encompass the remarkable diversity of maize and preserve historic linkage disequilibrium. Each parental line was crossed to the B73 maize inbred (chosen as a reference line due to its use in the public maize sequencing project and wide deployment as one of the most successful commercial inbred lines) to create the F1 population. The F1 plants were then self-fertilized for six generations in order to create a total of 200 homozygous recombinant inbred lines (RILs) per family, for a total of 5000 RILs within the NAM population. No matter what hardware and software are used, the basic principle involved is relatively simple. Lateral cephalometric radiograph, used for skull analysis Lateral cephalometric radiograph is a radiograph of the head taken with the x-ray beam perpendicular to the patient's sagittal plane. Natural head position is a standardized orientation of the head that is reproducible for each individual and is used as a means of standardization during analysis of dentofacial morphology both for photos and radiographs. The concept of natural head position was introduced by Coenraad Moorrees and M. R Kean in 1958 and now is a common method of head orientation for cephalometric radiography. Registration of the head in its natural position while obtaining a cephalogram has the advantage that an extracranial line (the true vertical or a line perpendicular to that) can be used as a reference line for cephalometric analysis, thus bypassing the difficulties imposed by the biologic variation of intracranial reference lines.

By the time of the industrial revolution and the quickening of land sales, canal and railway surveys, et al.
