Performing at the White House in September 2009 Their vocals appeared in a number of animated counting cartoons on the long- running PBS series Sesame Street, and the group was the subject of the 2005 documentary Sweet Honey in the Rock: Raise Your Voice. The group has ventured through 20 vocalists since its creation. Embarking on a new chapter in their musical journey, Sweet Honey In The Rock now includes four core vocalists—Louise Robinson, Carol Maillard (both founding members) Nitanju Bolade Casel, and Aisha Kahlil—plus Shirley Childress (an American Sign Language Interpreter who had been performing live with the group since 1981 until her passing in 2017).

Halla Bol ("Raise Your Voice") was a campaign started in 1994 by then Chief minister of Uttar Pradesh and leader of Samajwadi Party Mulayam Singh Yadav against two Hindi newspapers, Dainik Jagran and Amar Ujala , which together they shared nearly 70 per cent of the Uttar Pradesh state's Hindi newspaper readership. The newspapers remained defiant and stepped up their campaign against the government in response to the anti-reservation agitation in the hills (now Uttarakhand). On 12 October 1994 addressing a public meeting Mulayam Singh Yadav denounced the two papers, "Halla Bol", he exhorted his followers, "Commence the storming". The following year, he starred alongside Kate Hudson in Garry Marshall's comedy-drama film Raising Helen. He then portrayed music teacher Mr. Torvald in the 2004 musical drama film Raise Your Voice, co-starring Hilary Duff. Three years later, he had a starring role in the Pang brothers horror film The Messengers (2007).
