In academia, the term queer and the related verb queering broadly indicate the study of literature, discourse, academic fields, and other social and cultural areas from a non-heteronormative perspective. It often means studying a subject against the grain from the perspective of gender studies. Queer studies is the study of issues relating to sexual orientation and gender identity usually focusing on LGBT people and cultures. Furthermore, the essentialism of gender in feminist theory presents a problem when understanding transfeminism. Instead of understanding trans studies as another subsection or subjectivity to be subsumed under the category of "woman", we understand the task of trans studies to be "the breaking apart of this category, particularly if that breaking requires a new articulation of the relation between sex and gender, male and female". Trans subjectivity challenges the binary of gender essentialism as it disrupts the "fixed taxonomies of gender" and this creates a resistance in women's studies, which as a discipline has historically depended upon the fixedness of gender. Trans identities break down the very possibility of gender essentialism by queering the binary of gender, gender roles and expectations.

Though most references at the intersection of queerness and indigeneity fall on Two-Spirit identity and ideas surrounding it, queer of color critique extends the discussion to settler colonialism, future potentialities of Native identity and life, and general discourse about how Native Studies as an academic study can benefit from a sort of "queering". Juan Boza Sánchez or Juan Stopper Sanchez (1941 in Camagüey, Cuba – March 5, 1991 in New York City, New York) was a gayRandy P. Conner & David Hatfield Sparks, Queering Creole Spiritual Traditions: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered Participation in African Inspired Traditions in the Americas; (Haworth Press, Binghamton, New York, 2004); Afro-Cuban-American artist specializing at painting, drawing, engraving, installation and graphic design. Boza studied at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes "San Alejandro" from 1960 to 1962 and then from 1962 to 1964 at the Escuela Nacional de Arte (ENA) both located in Havana, Cuba. He was expelled from San Alejandro due to "political issues" and became a lithographer with the Experimental Graphic Workshop in 1965. Boza was fired as a result of the Congress of Education and Culture which convened in 1971 and led to the censorship of many artists in Cuba.

Scavo also stated that the album artistically "evoke[s] the biologically self- queering nature of the "sublime" [and] approaches the "opening" of Crampton’s sound as a trans-ontology".

Members of non-heterosexual communities may lose the ability to worship or practice religion within the most widespread religious organizations because they are not accepted as a consequence of their sexuality. Therefore, other spiritual spaces are created, known in many cases as "Queer spiritual spaces", that can vary from sacred buildings or locations that can be "queered" to natural environments or cultural practices in themselves. This kind of behavior leads to the general population believing that LGBTQI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersex) communities are largely atheist or agnostic, but instead some are just adopting non-Abrahamic faiths with pre-Christian traditions and customs, that are based on aspirational encouragement and personal well-being. In the process of recalibrating its vision Haiku OS had a community poll after the first alpha release in 2009 (8 years in development) on what could be the feature set beyond doing a floss refactoring of BeOS from late 1990s and decided to expand vision to supporting basic contemporary systems and protocols. Knowing the lack of resources to ever properly ‘catch-up’ with the mainstream - this basically rendered the r1 system as stable and operational more-less impossible to reach if foreseeable future. Exceptional contributor back then busy with packaging, but coming from humanities (media studies) presented this state of affairs in somewhat controversial queering visions talk at the end of 2010 FOSDEM entitled: “Haiku has No Future”. In this intervention he cited (radical) queer theory of Lee Edelman on queer futurity and Mathew Fuller’s (critical) software studies writing when addressing the situation and stating the Haiku OS is a “queer” operating system. “Our work will not ever define the future of operating systems, but what it does do is undermine the monotone machinery of the competition.
