At the start of the season, Graham is institutionalized in the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane, under the care of Frederick Chilton (Raúl Esparza), and awaiting trial for the murders committed by Lecter. Lecter's gaslighting and the disingenuous evidence used to frame Graham have left him unsure if his suspicions about Lecter are correct, or if he is projecting guilt onto Lecter due to his own psychosis. Graham's doubts are allayed after recovering repressed memories of Lecter's manipulations and abuse, and a visit by Lecter's own psychologist and fellow victim, Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier (Gillian Anderson), who assures Graham that she believes him. While preparing to stand trial, Graham insists to his skeptical former colleagues that Lecter is the real killer, while pulling strings from the confines of his cell to expose him.
In 2002, at the age of 33, John Henry entered pro baseball, with Ted pulling strings to get him onto the Red Sox's rookie team in the Gulf Coast League. Peter Parker's life becomes significantly more complicated as he finds himself torn between both Gwen Stacy and Liz Allan, both of whom have confessed their feelings for him; he eventually chooses Liz. Considering the events of her life, literary allusions to Wu Zetian may carry several connotations: a woman who has inappropriately overstepped her bounds, the hypocrisy of preaching compassion while simultaneously engaging in a pattern of political corruption and vicious behavior and ruling by pulling strings in the background. For many centuries, Wu was used by the establishment as an example of what can go wrong when a woman is placed in charge.
