After completing his graduate work, Primer returned to the United States, teaching first at Brown University (1880–1881). He taught at the College of Charleston in South Carolina from 1881 to 1890. The word as a description for a stubble field is found in medieval tithe maps and their apportionments,A Glossary of the Provincialisms in Use in the County of Sussex, William Durrant Cooper, 2nd ed. (1853), p. 43 and is Saxon in origin. Place names such as Earsham, Winnersh and Wonersh derive from their situation in an earsh field.

Gaskell, influenced by her husband's work, did not hesitate to give her Milton workers Mancunian expressions and vocabulary without going as far as Emily Brontë's transcription of Yorkshire pronunciation or Dickens' Yarmouth fishermen in David Copperfield. She developed a reputation for the skilful use of dialect to indicate status, age or intimacy between speakers. Margaret's adaptation to the culture is demonstrated through language. When her mother reproaches her for using Milton's vulgar provincialisms (such as "slack of work"), Margaret replies that since she lives in an industrial city, she must speak its language when called on to do so.

The wealthy citizens of Patavium refused to contribute money and arms to Asinius Pollio, and went into hiding. Pollio then attempted to bribe the slaves of those wealthy citizens to expose the whereabouts of their masters; his bribery did not work, and the citizens instead pledged their allegiance to the Senate. It is therefore likely that the Roman civil wars prevented Livy from pursuing a higher education in Rome or going on a tour of Greece, which was common for adolescent males of the nobility at the time. Many years later, Asinius Pollio derisively commented on Livy's "patavinity", saying that Livy's Latin showed certain "provincialisms" frowned on at Rome.

The government's amicus brief had advised that German law similarly prohibited disputes under its corresponding statutes from being arbitrated, and the Treaty of Rome which established what was then known as the European Union had five articles devoted to forbidding or restricting anti-competitive practices. "[W]hether or not other nations agree with United States law and attitudes relating to competition, it is extremely doubtful that they would describe them as 'parochial' in the sense of being petty provincialisms," he concluded. The second question was whether any policy applied that would specifically prevent foreign concerns from arbitrating antitrust claims brought against them by American companies. There he collected material on history and ethnography, which he combined in the book "Traveling to the North of Russia in 1791", published in 1886 and 1889 (in 1889 it was published by the Society of Ancient Writing edited by Leonid Maykov). Despite the brevity of the presentation, the facts communicated by him, especially concerning the state of trade and industry, the spread of latrines and handicrafts, are of great historical significance. In addition to "Traveling to the North of Russia in 1791", he wrote the "Message to the Russian Academy", which contains a collection of a large number of North Russian provincialisms, and the Russian translation of the German dramatic cantata: "Feliza, Mutter der Völker", which appeared in Saint Petersburg in 1793 (printed along with "Traveling to the North of Russia in 1791"). At the end of his life he became blind, died in poverty.
