It grows to between 1.5 and 5 metres high, has a weeping habit, and produces yellow and orange pea flowers in the summer. The Noongar peoples know the plant as Kabbur, Koorpa or Mondurn. This plant provides food for the larvae of several species of butterfly, including the turquoise jewel, fringed heath-blue, and long-tailed pea-blue.

Polynyas are often compared to oases as their open waters allow for an unusually early spring plankton bloom and an open water wintering area in a frozen world. This provides food for Arctic cod, a species that plays a critical role in supporting the entire ecosystem. Widely distributed in south-west Western Australia, B. prionotes is found from Shark Bay (25° S) in the north, south as far as Kojonup (33°50′S). It grows exclusively in sandy soils, and is usually the dominant plant in scrubland or low woodland. A pond was accidentally created when the peninsula was used as a landfill. The pond is independent of fluctuations in the water of Lake Constance, making it an attractive place for hatching ducks. It is close to the nutrient-rich shallow-water zones of Markelfingen corner, which provides food for the ducks and their offspring.

The construction of the dock could also stand to disturb the habitat. Eelgrass not only provides food for juvenile salmon but is also provides sediment control.

Chrysolepis are evergreen trees and shrubs with simple, entire (untoothed) leaves with a dense layer of golden scales on the underside and a thinner layer on the upper side; the leaves persist for 3–4 years before falling. The fruit is a densely spiny cupule containing 1–3 sweet, edible nuts, eaten by the indigenous peoples. The fruit also provides food for chipmunks and squirrels. Chrysolepis is related to the subtropical southeast Asian genus Castanopsis (in which it was formerly included), but differs in the nuts being triangular and fully enclosed in a sectioned cupule, and in having bisexual catkins.

The candlestick banksia is found across much of the southwest of Western Australia, from north of Kalbarri National Park down to Cape Leeuwin and across to Fitzgerald River National Park. English botanist John Lindley had named material collected by Australian botanist James Drummond Banksia cylindrostachya in 1840, but this proved to be the same as the species named Banksia attenuata by Scottish botanist Robert Brown 30 years earlier in 1810, and thus Brown's name took precedence. Within the genus Banksia, the close relationships and exact position of B. attenuata is unclear. The candlestick banksia is pollinated by and provides food for a wide array of animals in summer months.

The fruits of F. yoponensis contain more vitamin C than any other fruit available to the monkeys on Barro Colorado Island. Various invertebrates live in water-filled holes into which leaf litter falls; as it decomposes it provides food for the animals. Local Indigenous people have also raised concerns about contamination of fish in the McArthur River. Testing by the Northern Territory Government and the mine's consultant found that small species, including rainbow fish and bony bream, have been contaminated with lead above maximum-permitted concentrations, making them unsafe for human consumption. There is therefore no evidence that Roman presence ended the prehistoric settlement at British Camp.
