At any one time, Assisi cares for up to 200 companion animals. The sanctuary provides a refuge for injured, badly treated, abandoned and unwanted domestic animals.

The site was originally a marl pit, excavated in the 1890s for fertiliser and surrounded by open farmland. Kincraig Lake Ecological Reserve is one of fourteen Biological Heritage Sites (BHS) in Blackpool. A BHS provides a refuge for rare and threatened plants and animals.

The Yapunyah waterhole is a healthy aquatic system with no evidence of introduced fish species, cane toads, weeds or feral mammals (such as pigs and goats). It has abundant wildlife and a unique environment that provides a refuge for native species to survive the dry times.

The Washicoutai River is long. The river narrows several times in its source, and runs through a succession of large lakes, some of which are up to deep. The park has diverse flora with species of the Orchidaceae, Bromeliaceae families and jacaranda, arnica and cedrus genera. Species include Cariniana legalis, Gochnatia polymorpha and Vellozia squamata. The park provides a refuge for endangered fauna such as the cougar (Puma concolor), ocelot (Leopardus pardalis), oncilla (Leopardus tigrinus), maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus), Pampas deer (Ozotoceros bezoarticus) and solitary tinamou (Tinamus solitarius).

The Avonmouth Sewage Treatment Works is managed as a nature reserve by Wessex Water. The man-made lagoons and a pool provide a feeding and resting area for many birds including ducks such as pochard, tufted duck, teal and shoveler. The rough grassland provides a refuge for voles, great crested newt and other small mammals, which are preyed upon by kestrels and barn owls.

The Baleia State Park holds diverse natural environments due to its rugged topography, and its varied rocks and soils. It holds alpine meadows, cerrado and a small area of gallery forest. The park provides a refuge for several endangered species of birds and animals. 188 species of birds have been catalogued, of which 11 are endangered and three are endemic to the Baleia Forest.

The Wittow Ferry crosses the Strom. It is a ferry service for foot passengers and vehicles (up to a permitted total weight of 30 t each). In severe winters, when the water surface of the bodden freezes over, the Rassower Strom remains largely ice-free as a result of the current to and from the Großer Jasmunder Bodden and provides a refuge for large numbers of water fowl.

In 2009, Derwent Living was awarded first place in the Complex Needs category at the Guardian Public Services Awards for 'The Butterfly Project'. The project provides a refuge for women who are victims of domestic violence and who also suffer from mental health problems or drug and alcohol addiction. The project was set up in 2009 and has its roots in the women's refuge at Derby which Derwent Living has managed for over 15 years.

North of Omaha, the DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge provides a refuge for migrating waterfowl and is the winter home of more than 100 bald eagles. A neighbouring unused water mill, separated from the house by a turnip field, provides a refuge for him, but it harbours a sinister secret. During the war, the miller was murdered by his wife and her lover. By his own attitude and actions, Simon becomes increasingly isolated. When he is driven to call on his father's spirit for support, it appears that the call is intercepted by the spirits at the mill, which manifest as scarecrows and imperceptibly advance across the turnip field to threaten the family.

The park has about of cerrado forest, of seasonal semi- deciduous forest and of riparian forest along the banks of the Mogi-Guaçu River. The cerrado holds 200 species of trees including pau-terra, barbartimão, cinzeiro, capitão-do-campo and pimenta-de-macaco. The seasonal semi-deciduous forest includes large species, such as the jequitibá-rosa, figueira, cedro and the peroba. The forest provides a refuge for species such as the maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus), southern tamandua (Tamandua tetradactyla), lowland paca (Cuniculus paca), titi monkeys, and birds such as undulated tinamou (Crypturellus undulatus) and the turquoise-fronted amazon (Amazona aestiva).

Angophora Reserve is a nature preserve located in the Northern Beaches region of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales. It was once two adjacent reserves formally known as Hudson Park and Angophora Reserve, however the two were merged and are now referred together under the one title of Angophora Reserve. It borders the suburbs of Avalon, Clareville and Taylors Point and provides a refuge for native fauna and flora and serves as a wildlife corridor. The reserve also contains an Aboriginal shelter site that holds both archaeological and cultural significance and is one of the most important of such sites in the Sydney region.

Sandy Island is the name of a small unincorporated community in Georgetown County, South Carolina, United States, and a larger island between the Pee Dee and Waccamaw Rivers that has been preserved as a refuge and nature center. The island is about 9,000 acres (36 km) of a prehistoric sand dune. It is bounded east and west by the rivers, on the north by Bull Creek, and on the south by Thoroughfare Creek. The northern part of the island is higher and is mostly a longleaf pine forest, which provides a refuge for the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker and numerous other species of plants and animals.

The Bikin River flows west down the west slope of the central Sikhote-Alin, linking the Amur River basin on the west to the Primorsky ("Maritime") region on the east. The drainage basin of the Bikin runs through isolated mountainous territory, covered in mixed conifer and deciduous forest, emptying into the Ussuri River and ultimately the Amur and the Sea of Okhotsk. With over of undeveloped territory, the unbroken forest provides a refuge for large numbers of vulnerable species. The Bikin River flows west across the middle of the Sikhote-Alin Recent reviews by park managers record 51 species of mammals (moose, wild boar, roe deer, red deer, musk deer, tiger, sable, mink, muskrat, brown and Himalayan bear, etc.) and 194 species of birds.

The world's largest Arctic polynya at about , it creates a warm microclimate that provides a refuge for narwhal, beluga, walrus, and bowhead whales to feed and rest. While thin ice forms in some areas, the polynya is kept open by wind, tides and an ice bridge on its northern edge. Named the "North Water" by 19th century whalers who relied on it for spring passage, this polynya is one of the most biologically productive marine areas in the Arctic Ocean.

A pond lies within the eastern pocket of woodland and provides a refuge for wildfowl such as ducks and coots, and is also home to rare Sphagnum moss and marsh cinquefoil. The pond within Palmers Rough An independent ecological survey was undertaken in 2004, which recommended several long term management tasks including for thinning, coppicing, introducing glades, improving dead wood resources, and managing weeds, brambles and non-native species. The survey was one of many undertaken borough wide as part of the Solihull Woodland Management Programme, which aims to provide a commitment to conserving and improving the various woodlands and parks within the borough. Active woodland management includes for Hazel coppicing, and the use of shire horses, as an alternative to damaging wheeled or tracked vehicles, for removing felled timber.
