"Necropolis" is a 26-part story featuring British comics science fiction character Judge Dredd. Written by John Wagner and painted by Carlos Ezquerra, it was published in 1990 in 2000 AD progs 674-699\. The story was the subject of extensive foreshadowing in the comic, beginning with The Dead Man (progs 650-662), followed by "Tale of the Dead Man" (progs 662-668), and finally three stories collectively known as "Countdown to Necropolis" (progs 669-673). It pulled together various story threads going back four years (see also Democracy (Judge Dredd storyline)).

Following "Necropolis", the Judge Dredd story "Nightmares" (2000 AD progs 702-706) saw Yassa Povey brought to Mega-City One by Judge Dredd, where Dr Zilton Northgate, the city's best eye surgeon, fits him with bionic eyes, while Judge Anderson uses her telepathic abilities to ease his mental trauma. During his treatment, Yassa is kidnapped and rescued by Dredd. In the later story "Death Aid" (2000 AD progs 711-715, 719-720), Yassa is almost assassinated by a sniper as he boards his flight home; Dr Northgate intercepts the bullet and is killed.

Originally founded in 1962, the Progressive Party (Progs) is a forum and community for those across the Left to deepen their understanding of what they believe, why they believe it, and to be able to defend those beliefs. The Party dissolved in the 2000s, but a group of politically-minded students from outside the Union collaborated to renew participation. The Progressive Party officially rejoined the Union in the fall of 2019.

D.R. and Quinch continued to appear in 2000 AD from progs 525 to 534 in the form of an advice column with readers sending in letters with personal problems solved by D.R. and Quinch in their own way. One such column was "hijacked" by D.R.'s girlfriend Crazy Chrissy. These later episodes were written by Jamie Delano. In 1986 Titan Books released a collection of all D.R. and Quinch stories from 2000 AD called D.R. and Quinch's Totally Awesome Guide To Life.

Ezquerra also collaborated numerous times with writer Garth Ennis on Bloody Mary, Adventures in the Rifle Brigade, War Stories, a Hitman annual with artist Steve Pugh, and two Preacher specials (The Good Old Boys and The Saint of Killers miniseries) for DC Comics, and Just a Pilgrim for Black Bull Entertainment. Ezquerra occasionally used the nom de plume "L John Silver" for work such as 2000AD's "The Riddle of the Astral Assassin!" prog 118, and ABC Warriors, progs 134–136.

In 1995, Pat Mills wrote the Judge Dredd story Hammerstein2000AD Progs 960-963 which placed the eponymous robot into Dredd's world. In this story, Hammerstein rejoined the American army after the Mars mission, serving under General Blood 'n' Guts in President Robert L. Booth's robot armies. Following the great Atomic Wars of 2070, Hammerstein fought in The Battle of Armageddon against the Mega City Judges. Following the robot's defeat, Hammerstein was trapped under the Cursed Earth for decades before emerging, whereupon he faced off against Judge Dredd.

Lob has also had his left arm amputated on three separate occasions (twice was this self-inflicted). The art, by Carl Critchlow, represented a departure from his older painted style and instead used a computer-based line drawing technique that he developed in his self-published Thrud the Barbarian. Lobster Random debuted in an eight-part adventure in 2003, entitled "No Gain, No Pain" (progs 1342-1349). A hardback collection of this 45-page story was released by Rebellion Developments for the European market in April 2005.

2000 AD progs 1744-5 Decades later, the Volgan scientist Dr Zakaroff sought to create a robot warrior capable of treachery but initially failed to do so with Blackblood. In desperation, Zakaroff turned to the occult, and used a mixture of black magic and science to harness the betrayal of two lovers he forced to torture each other. Blackblood went on to prove his newly discovered treachery by killing Zakaroff, having one of his eyes shot out in the process. He left the socket empty as a reminder of his greatest act of betrayal.

2000 AD progs 1810-11 It is finally revealed that Judge Smiley was Bachmann's predecessor as head of the Black Ops unit. He had been appointed by Chief Judge Griffin in 2101 to work covertly to ensure that no other corrupt judge (such as Judge Cal) could threaten the city again: "a judge to judge the judges who judge the judges." In 2114 he went so deep undercover that he was presumed dead and was replaced by Bachmann. He recruited Dredd, Frank, Point and Maitland to destroy Bachmann once he realised what she was up to.

The Doomsday Scenario is the collective name of a series of Judge Dredd comic stories published in 2000 AD (progs 1141-1164) and the Judge Dredd Megazine (vol. 3 #52-59) in 1999. Written by John Wagner, it was the third such crossover story between those two publications, but was the first in which it was possible to read a complete and coherent tale by reading only those episodes which appeared in one comic or the other without having to buy both magazines. It was reprinted as two trade paperbacks, each collecting the episodes from one comic.

The original Judge Giant first appeared in prog 27 of the comic (1977) as a rookie judge who had just graduated from the Academy of Law. Set in 2099, his first appearance in "The Academy of Law" (progs 27–28) was a crossover with Harlem Heroes, set decades after the events depicted in that series. It featured a cameo appearance by his father, John 'Giant' Clay, as a very old man at the end of the story. "The Academy of Law" is also notable for the debut of another important supporting character, Judge Griffin, as well as the Academy of Law itself.

South Africa's apartheid laws initially limited the party's membership to the country's whites, from which it drew support mainly from liberal English speakers. It opened up its membership to all races as soon as this became legal again, in 1984, but the party remained predominantly white and English. The page drawn by Ian Gibson features Halo, Rodice and Toy involved in a game of strip poker with Sam Slade (with the head of Luiz Cannibal on a plate on the table). This was the last time that Moore wrote dialogue for these characters. Prog 2000 featured Halo beating Hap Hazzard and Finn before getting blown away by the Missionary Man in that issue's character Deathmatch. "Helter Skelter", a Judge Dredd story written by Garth Ennis (12 episodes Progs 1250–1261) features cameos from a myriad of previous 2000AD characters including Halo Jones in episodes 6 & 7\.

The resulting album Nosferatu Il Vampiro (2007) thus offers a new soundtrack to Werner Herzog's film in the form of a kind of rock opera, with Daniele Pomo as the only singer. Excerpts from the film, i.e. original fragments of the Italian soundtrack, short dialogues and monologues, serve as hooks for the individual numbers, which are then presented by the four protagonists on various keyboard instruments, guitar, bass and drums, sometimes interrupted again by insertions with film dialogues. Musically one moves completely in the tradition of the classical, rather song oriented Italo-Progs of the 70s.

2000 AD is a weekly British science fiction-oriented comic magazine. As a comics anthology it serialises stories in each issue (known as "progs") and was first published by IPC Magazines in 1977, the first issue dated 26 February. Since 2000 it has been published by Rebellion Developments. 2000 AD is most noted for its Judge Dredd stories, and has been contributed to by a number of artists and writers who became renowned in the field internationally, such as Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons, Grant Morrison, Brian Bolland, Mike McMahon, John Wagner, Alan Grant and Garth Ennis.

Later that year, the PFP became official opposition following the 1977 general election. The PFP drew support mainly from liberal English-speaking white South Africans, as owing to South Africa's apartheid laws, its membership was limited to the country's whites. The PFP was derided by right- wing whites, who claimed its initials stood for 'Packing for Perth', on account of the many white liberal supporters of the 'Progs' who were emigrating to Australia. What was left of the United Party merged with the Democratic Party, which had formed by moderate National Party dissidents in 1973 and led by former interior minister Theo Gerdener, to form the New Republic Party (NRP).

One of the main characters, Hammerstein, was already known to 2000 AD readers through the story Ro-Busters (originally started in the magazine Starlord). The story of the creation of robotic warriors to be used in the Volgan War had been introduced in the Ro-Busters story "Hammerstein's War Memoirs". Hammerstein is the only ABC Warrior to appear in film, making a cameo appearance in the 1995 Judge Dredd movie. The initial run of stories from progs 119–128 follows Hammerstein towards the end of the Volgan War as he recruits six robots to join him for a special mission – to tame Mars, which had become a futuristic Wild West.

An elite droid built from indestructible alloys, Steelhorn was proclaimed as a hero to the West and seen as one by Volgan civilians whom he liberated, even possessing a secret underground base. Due to his Vortex Hammer weapon, the Volgans viewed him as a war criminal, and so Volkhan and Blackblood infected him with a computer virus that caused him to start massacring civilians and fellow Warriors. Zippo eventually stopped Steelhorn and the virus was deleted, and the massacres were covered up by the military – but he was left traumatised and disillusioned by what he'd done.2000AD Progs 1601-4 Steelhorn eventually ended the Volgan War by killing the Volgan Marshall.

Most ordinary citizens are sent to the Iso-Cubes, tiny cells located within huge prisons. For example, one strip saw a citizen sentenced to a month in the iso- cubes for littering. Judges impose immediate sentences on the spot, usually lengthy sentences of imprisonment (or "encubement"). In extreme cases even the death penalty may be imposed, although relatively sparingly compared with the present day, reserved for mass murder or endangering the security of the city, but sometimes it is used simply to make an example or to intimidate the citizens.2000 AD progs 261, 630, 1337, Judge Dredd Megazine #1.01–1.07 and Batman vs.

First introduced in prog 198, "Pirates of the Black Atlantic Part 2" Each city block contains a Citi-Def force in case of crises, though usually they turn up in Dredd as rogue factions waging block wars. In very rare, desperate and often last stand scenarios the Justice Departments auxiliaries are issued weapons and fight alongside Judges, such as in the latter stages of both the Apocalypse War and Judgement Day.2000AD progs 786–799, Judge Dredd Megazine 2.04–2.09: "Judgement Day" Mega-City One also runs spy networks and a Black Ops Division of Judges. Under Judge Bachmann, their agents were brainwashed to worship the city as a god.

Steve Moore began working for Odhams Press' comics division while still in his teens, and in 1971 he created the UK's first comics fanzine, Orpheus. Moore's comics work has featured in most of the major British comics, particularly in anthologies. He was involved with 2000 AD from its earliest days, writing the second story-arc of their Dan Dare-revival "Hollow World" (Progs 12–23), and devising the Future Shocks format for Prog #25 with his "King of the World". Later work for 2000 AD includes "Red Fang" (with artist Steve Yeowell), "Valkyries" (with American artist John Lucas) and a series of one-off short fantasy stories collected under the name Tales of Telguuth (with multiple artists).

The 150 million population was later revised to 100 million in earlier strips and abruptly bumped to 800 million later on.Prog 59 The United States of the West concept was dropped entirely; a "United Cities of North America" of three megacities was mentioned in prog 42 and then itself dropped in favour of Mega-City One being an independent entity. In early strips, the Judges existed alongside a regular police force,Progs 10–12, "Robot Wars" Parts 1–3; Prog 30, "Return of Rico" were popular with the citizens, and the people enjoyed robots doing the work, with the "Grand Judge" saying they would not consent to work more than ten hours a week.

This concept was dropped after "Conspiracy", with the later stories directly harkening back to the original run. A subsequent story in 2004, "Traitor To His Kind" (progs 1406–1415), introduced Johnny's half-brother, head of a brutal police unit that dealt with mutant crimes. Hired by pro-mutant First Lord Negus, Johnny was sent to get a kidnapped King Clarkie back from mutant guerillas; loath though he was to do so, he knew elements within the government were trying to use this as an excuse to viciously crack down on mutants. Johnny and Wulf rescue the King, as well as uncovering a conspiracy in the Home Office to allow the kidnapping and subsequently fake the King's murder so as to provide a reason for mutant brutalisation.

In 1984, a computer game called Strontium Dog: The Killing was released by Quicksilva for the Sinclair ZX Spectrum.2000 AD's Spectrum games section, with the game (and emulator) free to download In the game, (based on the storyline "The Killing" from progs 350–359,) Alpha has to rid the galaxy of all the 'vicious murderers' by roaming through a maze of corridors and rooms killing the murderers with his gun. It is also revealed to the reader that Accounts Judge Maitland had been mindwiped by Judge Smiley, after discovering for him that Black Ops was financially backing Overdrive Inc.2000 AD prog 1809 Dredd tries to arrest Bachmann, but she gets the better of him, exhibiting combat skills far exceeding what he had expected, and Dredd is severely wounded. He speaks a code-phrase, "bullet to king four", into a concealed communicator, and this message is received by Point, Frank and Maitland: it is a post-hypnotic command which reawakens their memories of being recruited by Smiley, who has put together a secret team to investigate Overdrive Inc and Bachmann. Smiley had suppressed their memories until now because he was aware that Bachmann's telepaths would discover them otherwise. (Only Dredd could be trusted to keep his mental guard up at all times.)2000 AD progs 1811-12 Frank, finally recalling his mission, reveals his true identity to Overdrive, who orders Luna-2 to attack Mega-City One.

Gibbons entered the British comics industry by working on horror and action titles for both DC Thomson and IPC. One of his earlier works was a 12-part comic-series titled Year of the Shark Men for D.C. Thomson's The Wizard magazine, in April 1976 – July 1976"Year of the Shark Men" Retrieved on 22 May 2019 When the science-fiction title 2000 AD was set up in the mid-1970s, Gibbons contributed artwork to the first issue, Prog 01 (February 1977), and went on to draw the first 24 instalments of Harlem Heroes, one of the founding (and pre-Judge Dredd) strips. Midway through the comic's first year he began illustrating Dan Dare, a cherished project for Gibbons who had been a fan of the original series and artist Frank Hampson who, alongside Frank Bellamy, Don Lawrence and Ron Turner are well- liked and inspirational artists to Gibbons, whose "style evolved out of [his] love for the MAD magazine artists like Wally Wood and Will Elder". Working on early feature Ro-Busters (after Starlord merged with 2000 AD), Gibbons became one of the most prolific of 2000 AD's earliest creators, contributing artwork to 108 of the first 131 Progs/issues.
