"Midnight Sky" is an uptempo "Prince-esque" disco, pop, synth-pop, electropop and pop rock song with "gritty", "raw" arena rock vocals and "pristinely glossy" production. Written in the key of E minor, it has a tempo of 110 beats per minute, with Cyrus' vocal range spanning from the low note of D3 to the high note of D5. Its lyrics are inspired by Cyrus' divorce from Liam Hemsworth and relationships with Kaitlynn Carter and Cody Simpson, and show the singer "tak[ing] back her narrative" and being confident in herself. She also revealed in an interview in Alex Cooper's "Call Her Daddy" podcast that her desire was for the song to be an anthem that normalized pansexuality and provided visibility for those living in fear of rejection over their authentic selves.

He also battered the quartet for using art school-level ideas to gain a huge amount of attention from the press, given that the LP's featured artists had been receiving far less popularity: " This is both telling with regards to issues of class and privilege, and also an immense shame. [...] Future Brown has failed to recognise their collaborators as innovators of long standing in their own right." Garvey wrote that "it’s about everything and nothing, partying and post-postmodernism, global street music and the New York art world, commodity fetishism and basketball," but these concepts were unidentifiable when listening to the music itself, and the songs are actually "weirdly unremarkable.
For Blüher, at least, Jansen was the pioneering personality of the youth movement: The motif of the naked body, pristinely and truly perceived, is found not only in the youth movement, but also in other life reform groups and schools of thought. In all these cases, reference is made to the noble and truly idealized nudity of ancient cultures. Historian of the Movement Hans Blüher, who graduated from high school in 1907, spent seven years in the Wandervogel movement before leaving in 1909. But even then, he did not completely break off ties with the group, particularly as Blüher stood by his early friendships during the split-up of the organization and reclaimed sovereignty of interpretation over the development of the movement at the behest of the movement itself and supported by Willie Jansen, who urged him to pre-empt another party's account of the Wandervogel with a work of his own.
Cropduster appear in the April 2001 issue of The Aquarian Weekly, who noted "no one could've predicted their crown opus circa 2001, the undeniably addictive, pristinely recorded release Drunk Uncle[;] on all levels one of the year's top independent releases." Kevin Graves of AllMusic says "with vocals that linger somewhere near the same sing-speak cowboy range as the Supersuckers' Eddie Spaghetti, guitars that tend toward choppy strumming, and a general alt-country air that mixes things up with distorted electric guitars now and again, Cropduster's music is likable," and closes the review by saying "much of the album has a spirited jangle that calls to mind Philadelphia's exquisite outfit The Trouble with Sweeney, though Cropduster occasionally turns things up a notch further than the Trouble With Sweeney normally would." In a record review for CMJ, columnist Dylan Siegler writes "Cropdusters songs teeter on the same fine line, the one between endearing and stupid, packing in tight alterna-pop hooks and quirky instrumental breaks[;] with production as slick as a bowling alley, at the very least, Cropduster doesn't sound like a bunch of wannabe mainstream anterna-rockers–they sound like the real thing." Billboard.
