University lecturer Dr Diane Cassell's boss and one time lover Professor Kevin Maloney is trying to suppress her recent research into sea levels, as its results contradict the university's conformist stand upon global warming. Kevin, hoping to win a lucrative and high-profile research project for the university, pressurises Diane to tone down her controversial lectures, during which she tries to teach the students to reanalyse accepted views over climate change. He also attempts to make her withhold her research findings until the research project decision has been made. Kevin refuses to take the violent threats that Diane has been receiving from Green activists seriously.

It isn't until a dying Lou Beale (Anna Wing) pressurises Pat in July 1988 to give Simon peace of mind regarding his paternity, that Pat finally reveals that Simon's biological father is Brian, the mentally unstable man Simon grew up assuming was his stepfather. Simon and Brian never appear on-screen together, although later plots imply that they do correspond with each other, despite Simon (who left Walford in December 1990) claiming regularly that he hates him and describing to Frank that growing up with Brian was like "living with a nutter". Aside from this plot, Brian continues to remain a menacing off-screen presence, continuously pestering Pat for money. Brian isn't seen again until May 1989.

Commissioner Kushal Singh (Anupam Kher) pressurises Amar to arrest King within 4 days or get ready to get transferred to Tandarikala, a remote location which is also called as the graveyard of the policemen, as no policeman came back alive after going there. Amar is almost successful in arresting King but on their way back, Amar becomes injured in an incident involved with local bandits and King takes advantage of this situation and ditches Amar in the middle of the road and himself goes to Tandarikala, posing as a fake inspector. When raja aka King reaches Tandarikala, he learns that the village is ruled by a merciless ruler, Thakur Gajendra Singh (Amrish Puri). Thakur keeps all old men alive but abducts young men to work for him.
