Pot House Hamlet is located below Silkstone Church and was the site of a 17th-century pottery and 18th century glassworks. English Heritage have deemed this an underground national ancient monument.No 35494 authorised by the Secretary of State for Culutre, Media and Sport on 12 June 2003. Pot House Hamlet today houses many independent retail outlets.

Martin Burnell (1708–1776) died at Penny Pot House in February 1776. His older brother John Burnell (1705–1790) is noted as being the Lord Mayor of London in 1787-1788.

The stones can still be from the ring o bells pub to Pot House Hamlet on the route. Today, the Wagonway is a scenic route ideal for country walks, with storey boards, it is preserved as a historic route and is part of the village's history. The village is also home to "Old Silkstone Band" brass band. The band has a long history dating back almost 150 years.

A glass works was established at Silkstone around 1659 by John Pilmey, who had emigrated from France some years earlier. The glassworks had two furnaces, one for green glass and the other for white. Pilmey married Abigail Scott at Silkstone in 1658.

There is a local legend as to how/why the name 'Penny Pot ' for the camp originally came about. The camp is sited upon Penny Pot Lane and folklore has it that in the First World War, when it was a tented camp, soldiers used to march westwards up the road out of camp to purchase ale at the local farm for "a penny a pot". The name 'Penny Pot' could be associated with the name of a house. In the 18th-19th centuries there was a house on Penny Pot Lane called Penny Pot House and it was the home of the Burnell family of Fewston.

The word derives from the Latin taberna and the Greek ταβέρνα/taverna, whose original meaning was a shed or workshop. The distinction of a tavern from an inn, bar or pub varies by location, in some places being identical and in others being distinguished by traditions or by legal license. In Renaissance England, a tavern was distinguished from a public ale house by dint of being run as a private enterprise, where drinkers were "guests" rather than members of the public.

On Friday 22 July 1842, Charles and Emma visited Down House. They slept at "a little pot-house" in the village, which was also "a grocers- shop & the land-lord is the carpenter", and returned to London on Saturday afternoon, then on the Sunday Darwin wrote to tell his sister of their first impressions. Though there were plenty of trains on the line from London to the nearest station, from there it was a long, slow and hilly drive to Downe. The small quiet village was away from main roads, and though local scenery was beautiful on a good day, the house "being situated on rather high table-land, has somewhat of desolate air ... The charm of the place to me is that almost every field is intersected (as alas is our's) by one or more foot-paths— I never saw so many walks in any other country".
