John H. Reagan Confederate Postmaster General One of the first undertakings in establishing the Confederate Post Office was the appointment of John H. Reagan was a Democratic congressman from Texas (many years after the Civil War, Texas would elect him to a Senate seat). Notably, poet and literary scholar Charles Olson (who served as a Democratic National Committee official during the 1944 United States presidential election) declined the position in January 1945. In 1971, the Post Office Department was re-organized into the United States Postal Service, an independent agency of the executive branch, and the postmaster general was no longer a member of the Cabinet nor in line of presidential succession. The postmaster general is now appointed by the "governors", appointed by the president with the advice and consent of the Senate. The first school building was destroyed by fire in 1920, and a temporary school was held on the second floor of Billy Dixon's former home at Bent Creek, until a new one would be erected. Dixon was appointed the first postmaster when Adobe Walls received its post office on August 3, 1887. Dixon ran the post office out of his home, where he and business partner S.G. In March 1883 a portable wooden building was purchased for £135 to be used as a temporary telegraph office at Junee Junction. No new appointment was made until 1649 when the Commonwealth took over the post in Scotland. James Noble Tyner (January 17, 1826 – December 5, 1904) was a lawyer, U.S. Representative and U.S. Postmaster-General from Indiana. Tyner was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1869 serving three terms until 1875. While in the House, Tyner opposed granting railroad subsidies, promoted gradual western industrial expansion, and spoke out against Congressional franking privilege. In 1873, Tyner voted for the Salary Grab pay raise and bonus that prevented him from getting the fourth-term Republican Congressional nomination. President Ulysses S. Grant appointed Tyner Second Assistant Postmaster-General in 1875 then U.S. Postmaster-General in 1876 serving until 1877.

For several years it had been Keyes' goal to become Madison's first Republican postmaster. To attain this appointment Keyes and his allies persuaded Governor Alexander Randall not to run for the U.S. Senate in 1861, and to back Keyes' friend Judge Timothy O. Howe for that seat. Following Howe's victory, President Abraham Lincoln appointed Keyes Madison Postmaster, which granted him the power to reward Republican supporters with postal jobs, and punish enemies within the party. A year later Randall was appointed by Lincoln as First Assistant Postmaster General, and with Keyes controlled jobs in more than a thousand post offices in the state.

Portrait of Dorothea Krag Dorothea Krag (27 September 1675–10 October 1754) was a Danish Postmaster General and noble. Dorothea was married first to count Jens Juel in 1694, and second to the king's illegitimate half brother Christian Gyldenløve in 1701. As the widow of Count Christian Gyldenløve, the Postmaster General since 1686, she was granted the income from the office from 1703 until 1711. This was expected to be a purely formal office for her part, however she did in fact perform the duties of Postmaster, something unique for a woman of her time and the first for her country.

In 1821, Francis Freeling, Secretary of the Post Office, appointed him as Postmaster and Mail Agent for Falmouth, which was a leading hub of the Post Office Packet Service. This was handed over to the Admiralty in 1824, with Musgrave managing the transfer, whereupon his post as Postmaster was passed to William Gay, who served until 1843. Musgrave was then Comptroller of the London Twopenny Post until 1833, when it was taken over by the General Post Office. On July 25, 1875, Attorney General Pierrepont ruled on what was denounced as a fraud known as the Chorpenning claim. Chorpenning had petitioned the post office in 1857 for payment of mail delivery in San Pedro and Carson's Valley. Chorpenning was paid $109,072.95 by Postmaster General Aaron V. Brown in 1857 for his postal services, however Chorpening, under protest, believed he deserved more compensation. On July 15, 1870, Congress authorized the Postmaster General to adjust the Chorpenning claim. On December 23, 1870, Grant's Postmaster General John A. J. Creswell ruled that Chorpenning was owed a $443,010.60 adjustment.

A month later the Assistant Army Postmaster, Thomas Angell set up an Army Post Office in Varna in support of the Army Headquarters. A regular seaborne mail service was established between Varna and Constantinople. In late summer, an invasion fleet of some 600 ships and 50,00 men gathered at Varna creating a shortage of accommodation which prompted the Assistant Army Postmaster to obtain Lord Raglan's permission to operate from the ship Ganges, but the ship sailed for the Crimea before the Assistant Army Postmaster had moved on board. So he established the Army Post Office on the Sovereign which was smaller.

In 1869, President Grant appointed the "gifted and debonair" Creswell as Postmaster General. His appointment by Grant was very popular in Maryland whose citizens considered themselves part of the South. Having retired as Postmaster, Creswell was appointed by President Grant as an Alabama Claims Commissioner and served from 1874 to 1876. Creswell returned to private law practice and worked in the banking industry.

In 1853 the Martin family moved ten miles south of what is now Mason, on the banks of the Llano River. The settlement became known as Hedwigs Hill, thought to be named for his mother and daughter. Martin was the first postmaster of Hedwigs Hill. His nephew Charles Martin became postmaster three times, being succeeded by Charles' wife Anna Mebus Martin in 1879.

Roberto Bandinelli (, died 1650) was a Florentine merchant and postmaster of Lviv (Lwów) in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Roberto was the elder brother of Angelo Maria Bandinelli, also a postmaster of the Commonwealth.

Abraham Post Office was established on November 30, 1907, with George Washington Smith Jr. serving as the first postmaster. Mr. Smith served until June 1938. The next postmaster was his daughter K. In 1889 he transferred to the new seat of Kilmore, Dalhousie and Lancefield, which he represented until 1904. He was Minister for Agriculture from March to August 1880, Postmaster-General from 1890 to 1892, Attorney-General from February to April 1892, minister without portfolio from 1892 to 1893, and Postmaster-General again from 1894 to 1899. Duffy died at St Kilda in 1917.

Winton Malcolm Blount Jr., known as Red Blount (February 1, 1921 – October 24, 2002), was the United States Postmaster General from January 22, 1969 to January 1, 1972. He founded and served as the Chief Executive Officer of the large construction company, Blount International, based in Montgomery, Alabama. Blount was the last Postmaster General when the position was within the presidential Cabinet.

The Harco post office was established in November 21, 1917, and Thomas Hoffman was its first postmaster. In later years, Lois C. Naugle was postmaster for twenty years, with the post office housed inside Naugle’s general store. There was a one-room school known as 'Vinyard School'. John A. J. Creswell After Ulysses S. Grant was elected, he appointed Creswell Postmaster General. As Postmaster General, he reorganized the Post Office Department, introduced penny postcards and postal telegraphs, proposed a postal savings system. Creswell proved to be one of the ablest organizers ever to head the Post Office. He cut costs while greatly expanding the number of mail routes, postal clerks and letter carriers.

She was appointed postmaster of Santa Clara in 1922 by President Warren G. Harding, and was reappointed to office in 1927 by President Calvin Coolidge. She held this position for 12 years. She founded and edited the California Postmaster, the official organ of the postmasters' association. She then became hostess of the Mission Trails building at Treasure Island until 1940, a few months before her death.

A post office called Cedar Mills was established in 1860 with Charles G. Topping as the postmaster. In 1861, Henry J. Lasher became the postmaster and during the Sioux Uprising he buried all the official papers and for years there was no post office in Cedar Mills. The local planters typically preferred to entrust their letters directly to merchant ship captains, and considered the charging of fees by postmaster Edward Dismore to be tantamount to extortion. Galfridus Walpole (1683 – 7 August 1726) was a Royal Navy officer, politician and postmaster general of the Kingdom of Great Britain. He lost his right arm after a naval battle against the French in Vado Bay, Italy, in 1711 and commanded ships for another nine years. He sat in the House of Commons from 1715 to 1721, when he took office as joint postmaster general.

In 1736, Wyvill's brother-in-law, Thomas Coke, 1st Earl of Leicester, the English postmaster general, appointed him postmaster general of Ireland, which disqualified him from sitting in the House of Commons. A year or so later it seems the new postmaster had begun to experience the frustrations common to border-town officials. As Mungindi, Queensland's postmaster he was not empowered to deal with letters bearing NSW stamps so he applied for, and was appointed to the position of postmaster of Mungindi, NSW in 1867. The following year there were 43 subscribers listed in the Post Office Directory for Mungindi, Qld. Very few of these were family men but the numbers explain the need for the store, which Alexander was operating at that time. William F. Bolger (March 13, 1923 – August 21, 1989) was the 65th Postmaster General of the United States from March 15, 1978 to January 1, 1985. He was born in Waterbury, Connecticut. Bolger served in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. He took courses in accounting at George Washington University. He was the second career postal employee to attain the rank of Postmaster General.

Christian IV granted the postal concession for Norway to Henrik Morian on 17 January 1647 and Morian became the first Norwegian postmaster, followed by his wife Anna who was postmaster from 1648 to 1653. A conflict arose over the naming of the post office as Deerton. A different community named Deerton had been granted a post office on March 17, 1879, and Samuel Hayes was appointed as postmaster. In 1880, the settlers of Deer Creek moved two miles inside the Mason County line, and renamed their settlement Fredonia. William Kniveton was the first postmaster when Fredonia was granted a post office on March 20, 1880.

Arnold closed his grocery store, and the post office was abandoned in 1896. Fred Smith was then commissioned as Postmaster, but closed his business also before he could perform any of the duties of the office. Mrs. Carrie Fleck was the next Postmaster, when she and her husband established a store in the community later in 1896. She continued her duties until the branch was discontinued on February 28, 1910.

The postal arrangements of Antigua were controlled by the British Postmaster General in London till 1 May 1860. Scrub Grass post office was established about a mile and a quarter northeast of this point in the summer of 1844, Wm. J. Calhoun, postmaster. It was later relocated to Goheenville about 1850 and, on June 20, 1866, its name was changed to Goheenville with George W. Goheen being the second postmaster. It remained in operation until 1905. Goheenville P.O. appears in the 1876 Atlas of Armstrong County, Pennsylvania.

After many years of rising through the ranks of the United States Postal Service, Henderson was appointed as the United States Postmaster General by the Governors of the U.S. Postal Service, effective May 16, 1998. He was the fifth career employee to lead the world’s largest postal system. On May 31, 2001, Henderson's contract as the United States Postmaster General expired and he stepped down.

O'Bannon is a neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky centered along Old LaGrange Road and Collins Lane (which is named after Levi Collins). Fremantle Cemetery The son of silk merchant John Bateman, Walter Bateman was born in London on 22 June 1826. In 1830 the Bateman family emigrated to Western Australia on board the Medina, settling in Fremantle, Western Australia where John Bateman established himself as general store owner, whaler and postmaster. Following his father's death in April 1855, Bateman's mother took over as postmaster. After her, Bateman held the position until November 1861.

In 1969, Blount was appointed as the Postmaster General by U.S. President Richard Nixon, and he supervised the transition in 1971 of the U.S. Post Office Department from a Cabinet-level department of the U.S. government to a special independent executive agency. He was thus the last Cabinet-level Postmaster General, and he served as the first director of the new U.S. Postal Service. Blount's assistant Postmaster General was James M. Henderson, an advertising executive from Greenville, South Carolina, who was the unsuccessful Republican candidate for Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina in 1970. On 29 January 1835 W. H. Dutton, on behalf of the residents of Yass, requested the establishment of a post office by the postmaster general and colonial secretary. On 2 March, the colonial secretary recommended that an office be established with a Mr E. I. Abrahams as deputy postmaster for Yass and twenty shillings per week allowance for the conveyance of mail. The first office was then opened on 1 April 1835 with Mr Abrahams as postmaster. Abrahams resigned from the position in December as he was planning to return to England, prompting W. H. Dutton to recommend Mr J. W. Croaker as his replacement, the appointment being confirmed in March 1836.

In late 1872, a petition was made to the Postmaster General for the establishment of a weekly mail service between Bourke and the Cobar Mine. The service was established on 1 March 1873 with the first Postmaster being Charles Claxton, a storekeeper at the Cobar Mine, and the post office was run from the store owned by the mining company. Subsequent premises for the post office appear to have been those owned by the Postmaster at the time and included an inn (which was a source of some complaint), and various stores. In the summer of 1799 Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany (1763–1827), as Commander-in-Chief of the army, wrote to the Postmaster General (Lord Auckland) to request that "a good intelligent clerk" who could "facilitate delivery and to collect letters and protect revenue" be seconded from the General Post Office as the Army Postmaster to an amphibious expedition to Den Helder, Holland. Henry Darlot, a clerk from the Post Office Foreign Section, was chosen as the Army Postmaster, the first to officially accompany the Army overseas. Mail for the Army was handed to the Post Office Foreign Section, sealed in bags and passed to ships sailing to Holland. The Army established a base at Den Helder.

The last Whirlwind Post Office building, 2014 L.W. Riddle petitioned the Postmaster General in 1908 for the creation of a post office called Zama, located six miles northwest of McCloud Post Office and seven miles south of Dingess. The total population to be supplied with mail was 200. In January 1909, the First Assistant Postmaster General responded in a letter that marked out Zama and replaced it with Whirlwind. The proposed post office was located three miles west of the Norfolk and Western Railway, eight miles east of the Guyandotte River, and twenty feet west of Big Harts Creek. L.W. Riddle became postmaster of Whirlwind on March 31, 1910; he was replaced by Sol Riddle on May 25, 1911.

He begged the party's "Old Guard" to persuade President William McKinley to appoint him to his old job as Madison postmaster, which was achieved on the recommendation of Sen. John C. Spooner. After years of serious effort to get a post office on Summerland, Hudgins got his chance. After the postmaster of the Ramrod post office retired, she suggested that it be moved to Summerland and Hudgins was named postmaster. Hudgins' wife Mary learned to fly and kept a plane in Marathon. After meeting Philip Toppino of Toppino Brothers construction on Rockland Key, who also liked flying, Toppino suggested that Hudgins build an air strip on Summerland.

George Pack Jr. (1794 in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada - April 15, 1875 in Pack's Mills, Michigan) was a businessman, landowner, sawmill operator, and postmaster on the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. The town of Pack's Mills of which he was also postmaster, was named after him. Pack's son, George Willis Pack; grandson, Charles Lathrop Pack; and great-grandson, Randolph Greene Pack were to follow him in the timber business in Michigan, New York and beyond.

A Mary Horton served as postmaster of a new post office established at this location on July 10, 1880, a station which would serve the entire White River Valley until January 31, 1933. In 1881, Hatton was a candidate for several federal appointments at the start of the James A. Garfield administration. Garfield died that summer and in October, Hatton was appointed First Assistant Postmaster General during Chester A. Arthur's presidency. In 1884 he was promoted to Postmaster General when incumbent Walter Q. Gresham became Secretary of the Treasury. Hatton worked unsuccessfully to nominate President Arthur for a full term at the 1884 Republican National Convention.

The Postal Inspection Service has the oldest origins of any federal law enforcement agency in the United States. It traces its roots back to 1772 when colonial Postmaster General Benjamin Franklin first appointed a "surveyor" to regulate and audit the mails. Thus, the Service's origins—in part—predate the Declaration of Independence, and therefore the United States itself. He moved to Leeds in the 1950s as Assistant Head Postmaster, and his "apprenticeship" in adapting to Yorkshire life is related in his humorous memoir How I Became A Yorkshireman, published in the late 1960s. Frank Thorpe was born on 15 February 1885 in Kooreh, Victoria. Thorpe started his Commonwealth Public Service career in 1901, one of the Australia's earliest Commonwealth public servants, appointed as a personal clerk to the deputy Postmaster General in the Postmaster-General's Department. When Thorpe volunteered to serve in World War I, he was rejected and instead selected for temporary duty at the Department of Defence. In 1921 he joined the Prime Minister's Department as a senior clerk.

When the Morris Ranch post office opened in 1893, Guy D. Anderson was the first postmaster. He was succeeded by Charles Morris in 1894, who was subsequently succeeded by Clayton Morris in 1910. Cabell's descendants and his former slaves remained in the vicinity of his plantation and settled a community known variously as Cabell Farm and Piney Grove. A post office opened at Piney Grove in 1876, and Cabell's daughter Marina Cabell Hurt served as its postmaster. Hurt is thought to have been the first African American female postmaster in the United States.

The manor house was built around 1736-39 for head postmaster Beat Fischer by the architect Albrecht Stürler. However, the elaborate building proved too expensive for the postmaster and in 1742 it was sold to Samuel Tiller, who then sold it in 1764 to Emanuel Karl Viktor Stürler. His widow then sold the estate in 1788 to their son in law, Friedrich Heinrich von Stürler. The castle remained in the von Stürler family for over two hundred years.

As a member of Parliament he was an opponent of Chinese immigration and payment of Members of Parliament. In December 1885 O'Connor was appointed Postmaster-General in John Robertson's Cabinet, a role he served in for just over two months, until February 1886. He was again appointed Postmaster-General in March 1889 by Henry Parkes, serving for over two and a half years before being appointed Minister of Justice. He later briefly served as Solicitor General.

The town of Santa Claus was designed in 1849. On May 21, 1856, the name of Santa Claus was accepted by the United States Post Office Department, and the first post office was opened with John Specht as its first postmaster. On June 25, 1895, the post office name was changed to the one word Santaclaus. The town's unique name went largely unnoticed until the late 1920s, when Postmaster James Martin began promoting the Santa Claus postmark.

A host of national figures were called in as witnesses to offer their "expertise" on whether the Varga Girl and other Esquire content was obscene, among them H. L. Mencken and Rev. Peter Marshall. The press had a field-day covering the affair and ridiculing the Postmaster General and his department. When the hearing board ruled 2-1 in favor of Esquire, Postmaster General Walker refused to accept their decision, and revoked Esquire's second- class mailing privileges.

Postal Surcharge stamps were created to fulfil accounting requirements between the GPO at Larnaca and the other post offices on Cyprus. The first issue consisted of contemporary revenues as well as postage stamps with a manuscript JAB. These letters were the initials of the Larnaca postmaster Mr. J. A. Bulmer. In 1883 postage stamps were issued with the initials of the postmaster as well as a handstamp reading POSTAL SURCHARGE, and later with the handstamp only without the initials.

The Milo Academy Bridge Milo is an unincorporated community in Douglas County, Oregon, United States, about east of Canyonville on the South Umpqua River. Milo post office was established in 1923; Cora E. Buker was the first postmaster. It was named for Milo, Maine, the hometown of Amos O. Buker, who was the husband of Cora. Originally the post office at this locale was named "Perdue", named after John Perdue, Sr., who was also its first postmaster.

References to recreational drug use were among the many Legion of Decency thou-shalt-nots that would soon be rigidly enforced. In the sequence with the Austin - the smallest car sold in America at that time - W. C. Fields remarks that it "used to belong to the Postmaster General." This was a potshot at Will Hays, the diminutive former Postmaster General who was then trying to enforce an essentially voluntary and often disregarded early Production Code.

In 1851, management of the post office was transferred from Britain (Royal Mail) to the provincial governments of the Province of Canada, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. The position of Postmaster General was established in each province.

King Edward VII Land stamp. Before leaving New Zealand on the 1908 British Antarctic Expedition, Captain Ernest Shackleton was appointed as a New Zealand Postmaster, and provided with 23,492 New Zealand “Penny Universal” stamps, overprinted “King Edward VII Land”, for use on the expedition. Postmaster Shackleton was provided with a circular date stamp, “BRIT. ANTARCTIC EXPD.”, with “N.Z.”, and time, date, year on four lines in the centre, which used to postmark mail from the continent.

A successful barrister-at-law, he was appointed a Bencher of the Inner Temple in 1882. In parliament, the Liberal government made Shaw Lefevre First Commissioner of Works from 1881 to 1885, before he finally entered Gladstone's cabinet in November 1884 on his appointment to Postmaster-General. He relinquished the post of First Commissioner of Works in February 1885 but continued as Postmaster General until the Liberals lost power in June 1885 to Salisbury's 'Caretaker' ministry.

The first official postmaster, William M. Scott, was appointed in the town in with the Post and Telegraph Office operating from the Tomki Shire Offices. In 1879 a new Post Office building was started in Casino, with Postmaster Scott moving into the residence on 21 March 1880. The new office was a single-storey building with an office, four rooms, kitchen and stable. In 1881 permission was obtained to construct an underground water-storage tank and a boundary fence.
