Furthermore, the single was created by a variety of composers, such as Sigurd Rosnes, Courtney Woolsey and Stephen Stahl, amongst others.
Mad Season, also known as Mad Season by Matchbox Twenty, is the second studio album from American rock band Matchbox Twenty, released in May 2000. The album was a significant departure from the band's debut album, Yourself or Someone Like You, as it moved from a straight rock sound to poppier sounds and experimental rock. While not as successful as its predecessor, the album entered and peaked at #3 on the Billboard 200 with first week sales of 365,000 and was certified 4× Platinum in the United States in October 2001.
My Woman was Olsen's attempt to expand her musical style after 2014's Burn Your Fire for No Witness, with emphasis on avoiding being typecast as a lo-fi indie artist. With what she called a "plurality of voices," Olsen "wanted to use [her] vocal more and sing in the styles that [she] liked." Compared to Olsen's previous album, My Woman contains a poppier, more diverse sound. Musical genres and musicians that influenced the album includes Fleetwood Mac, The Shirelles, Crazy Horse, 1970s glam rock, 1960s country pop and grunge.
In conclusion, she added that she loves writing for film and would love to do more of it; it was a 'really natural' progression for her work. Birdy was featured on the cover of Wonderland magazine in the Autumn 2016 issue, with an accompanying shoot and interview. Speaking to the magazine, Birdy explained that her mother was a concert pianist and a lot of her family were very musical. Her mother would play classical music and her father would play "poppier records" like Tracy Chapman and The Beatles.
"My Love Life" is a song by Morrissey released in September 1991. It was a stand-alone single rather than taken from any studio album, although it was included on the compilation albums World of Morrissey (1995) and Suedehead: The Best of Morrissey (1997). Rather than continuing with the rockabilly sound of "Pregnant for the Last Time", Morrissey and songwriting partner Mark Nevin returned to a poppier sound for the final single they would release together. Featuring Chrissie Hynde on harmony vocals, the single reached number 29 in the UK Singles Chart.
The band began the progress of recording the album in late 2012. Upon the album's release, on April 29 the album was described to have a "poppier/R&B; influenced sound" and overall was a "collection of love songs" by Alter the Press. The album strives away from the band's previous studio album Symphony Soldiers pop punk and alternative rock sound and drives closer to a more recognizable radio friendly, dance-pop and R&B; sound. The EP's second track "Moon" is an electropop influenced track fit for top forty radio.
Sean Holio from Cool Try said; "Different, but yet familiar. Honest but with a hint of lyrical insincerity that displays Missy wanting you to know where she has been but without divulging too much." Niko Batallones from Earthings reviewed the song, saying "after so long out of circulation (her last album was released five years ago) the Aussie singer-songwriter is back with a new style". "Although I’m a bit anxious that people will see her as a Gotye copycat, especially with the poppier sound and all the origami in her body".
He scored the 2003 film The Low Budget Time Machine and wrote two songs, "Birthday Video" and "Fake Purse," for the Showtime television series Weeds in 2005. Mallari and Santiago continued to write new material as part of the Martinis, but no longer played live. Their debut album, Smitten, took two years to write and was released in 2004; the pair collaborated with a number of musicians, including drummer Josh Freese, during the recording. Santiago described the album as "a lot poppier and quirkier" than the band's previous material.
South Street district referenced in the song "Punk Rock Girl" was one of the first punk rock crossover hits, and balances between the genre's early days and its poppier, more mainstream interpretation. The Dead Milkmen were among the first artists to gain attention playing this more melodic strain of punk, like fellow genre pioneers NOFX and Green Day. However, Genaro declined to be considered part of the "pop punk" scene; in a 2015 interview, he stated he "[doesn't] really think that we fit into that genre. I don't know what genre that we fit into".
Discovery is a departure from Daft Punk's previous house sound. In his review for AllMusic, John Bush wrote that Discovery is "definitely the New York garage edition" of Homework. He added that Daft Punk produced a "glammier, poppier" sound of Eurodisco and R&B; by over- embellishing their pitch-bend, and vocoder effects, including loops of divas, synth-guitars, and electric piano. Stylus Magazines Keith Gwillim asserted that it is a disco album that draws on the genre's "danceable" and "sappy" elements, including its processed vocals and "prefabricated" guitar solos.
" He described how the group "have clearly maintained their tight and sprightly musicianship. There are plenty of '60s tinged bubble-gum melodies and ferocious wall-shaking firepower and they still manage to diversify their sound." Dylan Stewart of The Music felt "fun and frivolous, and represents a flashback to another time... [with] a slight shift towards a poppier delivery compared to the brash punk sensibility they were then known for." Madison Thomas of Tone Deaf caught their gig at the Tote in November 2012, "the Spazzys seamlessly slip back onto the Tote stage.
Following Christmas 1963, Cooke invited J.W. Alexander to his home to preview a new song he had just written, one Cooke was very excited about. When he arrived, Cooke ran through the number on his guitar twice, the second time going over it line by line. Both were very excited to record the song, with Alexander viewing it as more personal and political than anything he had yet attempted. He warned Cooke that he may not profit off the song as he had with lighter, poppier songs, but Cooke did not care.
Mike Wass from Idolator said "We Belong" has a "ridiculously catchy vocal hooks and boasts a sing-along chorus" and said it sees "Sheppard exploring '80s synth-funk with enough modern flourishes to avoid sounding dated. All in all, it sounds like another huge hit." Joe DeAndrea from We Got This Covered said "We Belong" is "Ridiculously catchy and practically 80s-esque, the song almost sounds like a poppier and more predictable version of The 1975." "We Belong" was the most added song to Australian radio in the week of November 7, 2016.
This gentler direction was largely maintained and refined in their later records, though the occasional poppier and rockier number, such as "Poodle Rockin'" from Spanish Dance Troupe or "Mow the Lawn" from Sleep/Holiday, continued to crop up. Following their fifth album – 1998's appropriately-titled Gorky 5, which was released on Fontana's sister label Mercury Records – the band were dropped by Fontana. They quickly signed to Mantra Recordings (a division of the Beggars' Banquet label). In 1999, Gorky's released their first album for Mantra, Spanish Dance Troupe.
In a retrospective review for AllMusic, critic Ned Raggett gave the album three and a half out of five stars and wrote that "Possessed of a good mid- range punk voice -- no sneering or bellowing, not really singing but not just talking over the songs either -- he creates the same basic rush he brought to his early stints in the Adolescents and the faster Christian Death songs he [had] worked on, but with a slightly poppier bent at points that perfectly balances sass and strength, while not being afraid to experiment from time to time either".
The band traveled to Woodstock in upstate New York and rented the country home of percussionist Jerry Marotta, converted into Jersville Studio. Keating was joined by guitarist and keyboardist Anand Wilder, bassist Ira Wolf Tuton, and engineer Steve Revitte, but not All Hour Cymbals drummer Luke Fasano. According to a Rolling Stone article, Odd Blood was inspired by a trip to New Zealand, where Yeasayer experimented with LSD. Keating has jokingly pointed out that the aim was to "sonically challenge Rihanna in the clubs", with an emphasis on bass, while Wilder has said that the band tried to make "a poppier album".
The single garnered praise from the former BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel (who preferred the B-side), and was voted joint record of the week with The Notsensibles "I'm in Love with Margaret Thatcher" in the English music journal Sounds. The second single "The Time Is Right for Us" backed by "My Karma" was much poppier than their first outing but met with little success. Internal dissent within the group caused them to split in 1980. Despite their general obscurity, or because of it, interest from punk nostalgists and the internet have made original SlowGuns singles collectible.
"Run, Run, Run" is a 1964 song written by Holland–Dozier–Holland and released as a single by Motown singing group The Supremes. After a couple of years of unsuccessful singles, the Supremes had finally broken through with a Top 40 single (23) in December 1963 with "When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes". On the throes of its release, Motown rush-released a second HDH single titled "Run, Run, Run". Inspired by the sounds by Phil Spector (citation needed), it was an attempt to give the Supremes a poppier sound to their earlier heavy R&B; recordings.
Dokken are considered players of the hair/pop/glam metal subgenre by many critics and fans and Tooth and Nail is included in various polls of best glam metal albums. However, in a recent interview, Don Dokken disclaimed the band's belonging to that category and any comparison with acts like Poison, Winger and Mötley Crüe. A more thorough analysis by Canadian music journalist Martin Popoff places Tooth and Nail in transition from the NWOBHM-influenced debut album towards a more melodic and poppier kind of music, similar to the rising glam metal which would dominate the LA scene in the following years.Popoff: pp.
When released, the album didn't feature the Warner logo anywhere on the packaging, a move to ease tension among fans. The album was warmly received by most critics however met with mixed reviews from fans, some of which felt the album contained a "poppier" sound (some accusing Warner of having an influence on the music) while others felt it was a mixture of ..And Out Come the Wolves and Life Won't Wait. The album's music video for the first single, "Fall Back Down" was also met with some criticism from fans due to members of Good Charlotte and Kelly Osbourne making appearances.
Sense Field was an American post-hardcore band from Southern California, formed in 1990. Originally consisting of vocalist Jon Bunch, guitarist Chris Evenson, guitarist Rodney Sellars, bassist John Stockberger, and drummer Scott McPherson, the band formed from the ashes of members' prior group, Reason to Believe. AllMusic summarizes their career as a "critically respected L.A. melodic hardcore band in the 1990s, [which] mined poppier fields in the '00s." Sense Field disbanded in 2004 although briefly reformed for two Revelation Records anniversary shows, as well as a pair of memorial shows in 2016, following the suicide death of Jon Bunch.
Upon release, Music & Media picked the song as their "single of the week" during November 1996. They commented: "David Roback and Hope Sandoval's dreamy acoustics have become even more poppier with gorgeous melodies, plenty of minor chord changes and a delicate violin whispering in the background." In a review of Among My Swan, Chris Molanphy of CMJ New Music Monthly commented: "...amid Hope Sandoval's wispy voice and David Roback's plinking guitars, there's a brightness trying to emerge. You hear it in the chimes that ring over "Disappear," and in Sandoval's wistful harmonica on "Flowers in December.
Minor changes were included, like substituting Hudson's LinnDrum with Zarr's Oberheim DMX. Other changes were in the vocal delivery from the soul, gospel like singing on the demo to Madonna's "poppier" belting; she still remained true to the original melody of the track. The group was not given a production credit on "Holiday" since Benitez had presented the track to Sire Records, and he had an existing relationship with Madonna. Although Hudson pressed for a credit, they ultimately let it go since they felt that the song would be their chance to get recognized as efficient songwriters.
Menezes also co-wrote and performed on the 2003 Tribalistas hit "Passe Em Casa", from the million-selling Tribalistas album. Her 2005 single, "Como Tu", a duet with Brazilian superstar Ivete Sangalo was released amidst much hype because Sangalo was achieving platinum album sales at the time. The track reached the lower reaches of the airplay Top 30 in Brazil but failed to emulate the success of recent Sangalo hits. The hit single was lifted from Menezes' 2005 album release Pra Você; the album received lukewarm reviews, possibly owing to a more poppier sound than previous releases.
The song evokes, through Sam Martin’s vocals, a non-reciprocal love that a man has for the woman of his dreams. According to Philipp Kressmann from Westdeutscher Rundfunk, "Rather Be Alone" is heading for the disco and has some brass vibes. He added that the combo "sounds much poppier than [Robin Schulz's] last tracks and reminds of cheerful tunes of Alle Farben or Felix Jaehn". German magazine Klatsch Tratsch noted that it has disco influences, with a new side, by the presence of "a whipping groove with funky brass, housy piano vibes and a vocal voice of Sam Martin".
Konietzko originally wrote thirty songs over a period of eight or nine months for Nihil before settling on ten final tracks. Watts came into the studio after the songs were mostly complete and added lyrics to a handful of songs, which he said was "actually quite liberating" in contrast to writing his own music from scratch. Konietzko described the album as being entirely foreplay, without any resolution, and said it was the band's best album to date, a statement he believed he would be standing by for years. He also said its poppier sound was more his style.
Siberia is the second studio album by Canadian recording artist Lights. It was released worldwide on October 4, 2011, excluding Australia (October 28, 2011) and the United Kingdom (March 12, 2012). Production was handled by Tawgs Salter and Canadian electronic band Holy Fuck, while featuring guest vocals from Canadian rapper Shad on two of the album's tracks. Musically, Siberia has been described as being "grittier" and "darker" whilst also incorporating "poppier moments", and while the album still uses prominent elements of synthpop, it also features influences of other genres such as dubstep and hip- hop and bitpop.
"Think About It" sees Melanie move away from her more rock- influenced sound that she had spent time crafting in years prior. Incorporating "a more electronic and layered production style", the song has been described as a "summer track", with an "infectious melody". The single has been compared to some of the music featured on her debut solo album titled Northern Star, whilst being described as a "poppier dance feel", it has elements of dance-music. Lyrically the song discusses doing something "you know you shouldn't", with lyrics stating "you only regret what you don't do".
According to a 2013 Rolling Stone article, Love Songs led to Hewitt becoming a pop star in Japan. She attributed her success to the country's love for "perky music" and said: "The poppier the music, the better." After Hewitt attracted further attention following her role in the family drama Party of Five, she released two studio albums in the United States through Atlantic. Let's Go Bang (1995) featured dance-pop and "light R&B;", and her self-titled album (1996) had R&B-inspired; pop music and adult contemporary music with lyrics about "love, loss, and longing".
"Dayglo Necros" not only continues their legacy as one of the most consistently badass punk bands around, it manages to up their game, displaying their continued improvement – both upon the genre and as musicians. Following in the footsteps of their last album, "They Call Us Death," the music of "Dayglo Necros" is hard, fast, and furious, and yet manages, at times, to keep the spirit and the "whoa-oh-ohs" of their earlier efforts, "13 Halloweens" and "The Traveling Vampire Show." This melding of the earlier, poppier sounds of their first releases with the harder sound of their more recent work. "Dayglo Necros" was released July 1, 2012 on Spookshow Records.
On 27 June 2012, Tame Impala uploaded a short trailer for the album, featuring a snippet of the outro to the song "Apocalypse Dreams" set to various video footage shot during Tame Impala's Innerspeaker tour, and revealing the title to be Lonerism at the end. On 9 July 2012, the entire track "Apocalypse Dreams" was released for free download, showing a poppier side to their psychedelia, and a more lavish and expansive sound. It was also revealed that the first single from Lonerism would be released in late July 2012, entitled "Elephant". On 13 July 2012, details of the new album emerged, including the album artwork and track- listing.
Desario formed in early 2004 when John Conley, Michael Yoas and Jim Rivas, who had played together previously in various other bands including Holiday Flyer, got together and started writing songs. The intention was to veer away from the poppier songs that they produced in their earlier bands and find a more indie rock-based center. Armed with the start of about 7 songs and a band name, they began looking for a bass player to round out the group. A chance meeting between Jim Rivas and a friend of Mike Carr's, initiated by a conversation about Jim's The Shins T-shirt, resulted in Mike Carr's introduction into the band.
Volta was well received by critics upon its release, though to a lesser extent than Björk's previous albums. According to Metacritic, the album holds a rating of 77/100, indicating favorable reviews, with Allmusic stating that 'Volta finds the perfect balance between her (Björk's) poppier work in the '90s and her experiments in the 2000s. Arwa Haider also stated that 'this (Volta) is arguably (Björk's) strongest album yet', while Priya Elan praised the album as 'another amazing statement of intent-full of hope, eccenticity and wonderfulness.' Michael Keefe, in a more balanced review, said that Volta is not 'a great album, but it is quite good.
Lightbulb Sun is the sixth studio album by British progressive rock band Porcupine Tree, first released in May 2000, and later reissued in 2008 on CD, DVD-A surround sound, and vinyl. This album, along with their prior album Stupid Dream, is considered to have a more commercial, poppier sound, as opposed to the abstract instrumental sound of their prior albums, or the heavier metal sound in their subsequent albums of the 2000s. The album is divided into two parts between "Rest Will Flow" and "Hatesong". The first part concentrates more on melodic, pop elements of Porcupine Tree's style, while the second has a more experimental character.
Upon release, Marc Hirsh of The Boston Globe commented of the tracks on Rockford: "...along with "If It Takes a Lifetime," they sound blessedly like classic Cheap Trick songs and performances." Alan Sculley of The Desert Sun noted: "The poppier side of Cheap Trick's sound emerges brightly on hook-laden Beatlesque songs such as "If It Takes A Lifetime" and "Every Night And Every Day"." Lou Friedman of PopMatters noted: ""If It Takes a Lifetime" is another ballad disguised as a rocker, and has a sing-along chorus to boot." Alexander Müller of The-Pit described the song as "somewhat relaxed but equally good" as the album's previous track, "Perfect Stranger".
Life thru a Lens is the debut solo studio album by English singer-songwriter Robbie Williams. It was Williams' first solo album following his departure from Take That. Released on 29 September 1997 through Chrysalis Records, it is influenced by Britpop, a departure from the poppier tone of music Take That employed. The album's working name was The Show-Off Must Go On. The album's first three singles, "Old Before I Die", "Lazy Days" and "South of the Border" (the only single to miss the top 10), were all moderate successes, but it was the fourth single "Angels" which catapulted Williams to international fame as a solo artist.
We were taking meetings, but once we were hanging out with Brett, we got right back into the swing of things." Go received mixed reviews from contemporary music critics. "The scenes may change, but the Soundtrack remains the same: sweet, flawed, sort-of-optimistic emo-pop," said Kory Grow of Spin. Gregory Heaney of Allmusic wrote that while previous effort My Dinosaur Life was a summer record released in winter, Go is the exact opposite; he also complimented the band's poppier sound, noting, "Once fans shift into the proper gear, [Go] really shows that these guys are capable of something more expansive than anything they've done before.
But, the song wastes no time getting to its generic 'oh oh oh-a-oh' chorus, the kind of thing that a glowing sea of wailers will shout up to the rafters of the stadiums the band visits on tour next year. A bit lazy, one could argue, but as Martin told the Wall Street Journal, he doesn’t want 'anything to get in the way of the mood of the music … you can't translate the melody into words.'" Adam Silverstein of Digital Spy wrote, "Before Martin's split from Gwyneth and the emotional Ghost Stories that followed, Coldplay were on their way to a poppier place with 2011's Mylo Xyloto.
Shortly after the New Jersey ska punk group Face First disbanded in 2002, singer/guitarist Tom "Chitty" Keiger, bassist Jarrett Selzer, trumpeter Rich "Okie" Okamoto and drummer Tommie Clayton decided to reunite to play a poppier, more synthesized form of modern punk rock. Therefore, Okamoto switched from trumpet to keyboard, and Kenny Ryan, formerly of Hidden in Plain View, joined as a second guitarist. The name "Houston Calls", according to the band, is a combination of chapter titles from the Apollo 13 DVD. Other choices included "Zoltar Madness" (from Big), "Giant Green Insanity" (from The Toxic Avenger), and "Deeds in NY" (from Mr. Deeds).
AllMusic's Mark Demming gave Mach Schau a rating of 3.5 out of 5 stars and felt that it "pretty well picks up where the band left off when we last visited with them" where the "poppier (and garagier) accents of" early albums was "pushed to the back burner in favor of a harder, guitar-based sound" of later releases. Evan Alexander of The Blurb Magazine opined that the group were "doing what they do best. Gnashing six-string rock, dripping with melody and that pertinent Hoodoo panache". He praised Faulkner's vocals which were "in as fine a form as they’ve ever been" and Shepherd's guitar work "the oomph control knob on [his] amp hasn’t slipped down a notch".
After this period of massive success and a considerably steady style in their music, Glay's work took a turn in 2001. Their 2001 album One Love got mixed feelings among the fans, due to its disparities to their earlier works, with a different, generally poppier and experimental sound, and songs that had reggae and R&B; influences. Their 2002 album Unity Roots and Family, Away, which was almost completely made of slow-paced songs and also had elements from other types of music (gospel, rap and traditional Okinawan music), was not welcomed by most fans. In spite of the "cold" reception these works had, the band reached No. 1 spot in the charts with both albums.
Despite being recorded only six months after their previous album Queendom, this album manifests a strong progression both in cohesiveness of the musicians and sound. In fact, the arrangements and compositions are tighter as the result of a real group effort, while the sound of the album is very similar to what could be heard at a Show-Ya's live show at that time. On the contrary, the two poppier songs on the album "S・T・O・P (But I Can't...)" and the single "One Way Heart" were not composed by the band and are almost harbingers of next album Trade Last's style. The single was also used as theme for a Japanese TV show.
Similarly, Dave Simpson of The Guardian felt that the band reinvented themselves with poppier songs, calling Rather Ripped "an extraordinary state of affairs in Sonic Youth's 25th year". Writing for Rolling Stone, Rob Sheffield highlighted Moore's guitar playing for giving the album "a sense of emotional urgency" and considered "Incinerate" and "Pink Steam" some of the album's highlights. Gordon's vocal delivery was widely praised, with Ben Ratliff of The New York Times comparing it favorably to The Velvet Underground singer and collaborator Nico. Robert Christgau also remarked that Gordon sounds "breathlessly girlish" despite being 53 at the time, and that both she and Moore "evoke visions of dalliance, displacement, recrimination, and salvation that never become unequivocally literal".
As a solo artist, Cho has been involved in writing all of his lyrics and producing most of his music. In the early stages of his career, Cho's musical style gravitated towards hip hop, with his releases under the name Luizy also incorporating pop and electronic music. However, the change of Cho's stage name as a soloist to WOODZ in 2018 was accompanied by a change in musical direction, described by Status Magazine as an "[evolution] into a more realized identity". As opposed to his "poppier" approach as Luizy, Cho characterizes his production style under the WOODZ name as "mostly [...] R&B;", but mentions that he is "not picky about the genre".
Songs like the single "Can You Count, Suckers?" are described as an "unstoppable blend of pop-punk and hardcore" and as "pure modern pop-punk". The positivity of the album is halted by the acoustic ballad 'A Loss in the Ranks', which was written specifically about the death of founding member Alex McCulloch. With the writing of the second album the band members have stated that it displays a more contrasting, broader range of styles, offering a more dynamic sound and that the "heavier bits are going to be heavier, and I think the poppier bits are going to be more poppy maybe". They have also considered the album as more of a group effort, so more diverse influences will come into their style.
The Presidents of the United States of America, 2005 In popular music, Seattle is often thought of as the home of grunge rock, but it is also home to such varied musicians as avant-garde jazz musicians Bill Frisell and Wayne Horvitz, hot Jazz band leader Glenn Crytzer, rapper Sir Mix-a-Lot, smooth jazz saxophonist Kenny G, and such poppier rock bands as Goodness and The Presidents of the United States of America. Such musicians as Jimi Hendrix, Duff McKagan, Nikki Sixx, and Quincy Jones spent their formative years in Seattle. Ann and Nancy Wilson of the band Heart, often attributed to Seattle, were actually from the neighboring suburb of Bellevue, as was progressive metal band Queensrÿche. Seattle hosts a diverse and influential alternative music scene.
208 Deal had been experimenting with a chord progression for a while, and since her band The Breeders were then inactive, she decided to donate her new composition to the Pixies. The Pixies chose Deal's riff, as it was a "poppier, more kid-friendly thing," and Francis agreed to let her sing lead vocals and write the new song; significantly, Francis is relegated to backing vocals on the track. Francis' move was meant to warm the previously cold relations between the two—in the previous two Pixies studio albums, Bossanova (1990) and Trompe le Monde (1991), Francis, the band's principal songwriter, had not let Deal contribute any songs or sing lead vocals. This became one of the reasons for the Pixies' 1993 split.
Produced by Brad Jones, who had worked on albums for bands such as Yo La Tengo, Comfortable featured a crunchier, poppier, more guitar-driven sound than Monkeys and received generally much improved reviews. The Village Voice called it "a phenomenal upgrade" and remarked that "Pee Shy make sexiness and marketability look cool and substantive," although the newspaper's critic also criticized the band as "introverted." Veteran Voice music critic Robert Christgau listed two of Wheeler's songs from the album—the peppy love-gone-wrong lament Mr. Whisper and the mellower Much Obliged—as "choice cuts," alongside We've Got It Goin' On by the Backstreet Boys. Mr. Whisper also received some airplay on commercial radio stations nationwide, including KROQ-FM in Los Angeles.
They toured as headliners in Germany and Japan, hitting the Japanese charts with single "Everything", in 2001 signing to MCA in the US. While recording the follow-up album, after the big US deal, the band span off into personal breakdown. Given a "write more 'pop' or get 'dropped' " ultimatum by the UK label, Doyle decided they had already strayed too much into 'pop' territory and quit the band. He watched as poppier, manufactured copies of his band sprung up such as Busted and McFly and dominated the music charts for the next couple of years, while he could not put his finger on a direction to pursue next. Depression descended and Doyle became reclusive, not leaving the house for days at a time.
" Dave Simpson of The Guardian graded the album three stars out of five, but his review was more straightforwardly enthusiastic. He described the LP as "a rickety but entertaining mix of the best elements of his imperial period: tribal glam stomps, razor-slashed T.Rex guitars, two-drummer Glitter beats, knowing homages to cult icons (Vince Taylor and Vivienne Westwood) and sex ... 'Dirty Beast' offers a sweeter, poppier Ant than the glam-punk of yore. While nothing quite reaches the dizzy heights of Antmusic, 'Shrink' – a perhaps autobiographical romp about a man who needs medication to feel normal – is as riotous as he's sounded in three decades. Jeremy Allen in the NME was less complimentary, awarding the album 4 out of 10 and considering it to be too lengthy and too experimental.
In 2013 I Heart Sharks signed a record deal with Island Records and finished producing their follow-up album "Anthems". Intro Magazin The album was recorded in an unused textile mill in Manchester and in the former DDR radio station in Köpenick in Berlin with the help of producer Joe Cross of Hurts and The Courteeners fame. Other notable contributors include Midge Ure and Henning Sommer from Hamburg band Wilhelm Tell Me. Intro Magazin "Anthems" was released in Germany, Austria and Switzerland on 28 March 2014, Intro Magazinand received a very positive responses from the press. Rockzoom Review The sound was described as poppier than the predecessor, "Summer", with more confident vocals and thicker arrangements, Tribe Online Magazinesome even going so far as to describe the band as "Berlin's Hipster Prophets".
HotNewHipHop called the track "very hot", and said Big Boi and Sleepy Brown are a "time-tested duo" following their collaboration on 2004's "The Way You Move", from Speakerboxxx/The Love Below. Consequence of Sound called "Doin' It" "intergalactic", while Stereogum noted that it is "poppier" compared to "Return of the Dope Boi", which it called "harder-hitting". Rolling Stone echoed a similar sentiment, calling "Doin' It" a "radio-friendly pop-rap tune, with the Outkast emcee musing about eternal love over upbeat piano chords" and "Return of the Dope Boi" a "grittier cut full of staccato flexing and punctuated tag-teamed boasts, adorned with funk guitar stabs and orchestral synth lines". Spin thought "Doin' It" had "soul undertones", while "Return of the Dope Boi" featured "heavier production and a standout verse from Backbone".
For a 2018 Billboard article, writers Taylor Weatherby and Nina Braca said the album "may possibly be the most iconic debut album from a former band member in pop music history", describing it as "[a] bona-fide success that foreshadowed Timberlake's superstardom to come" and "at the same time, a declaration of independence from his poppier beginnings." From the same magazine, Dan Weiss deemed Justified as Timberlake's "classic album." Writers from Consequence of Sound deemed it "the standard for former teen pop stars' bids to be taken seriously" when comparing it to other debut solo albums released later, and Herald Sun considered it a "boy band to men blueprint." British singer- songwriter Ed Sheeran cited the album as an inspiration for his 2014 single "Sing", and Shawn Mendes for his 2018 song "Lost in Japan".
Faiella's uplifiting, poppier version, produced by Bruno, Plate and his partner Ulf Leo Sommer, was eventually selected as her debut single with the record company. In summer 2000, an accompanying music video was filmed and sent to German music networks, but as the record lacked general airplay support, it underperformed and the singer was eventually dropped from her label. A few months later, Plate got known that Polydor Records, RTL II network and production company Tresor TV were searching songs for a girl band, the soon-to-be-cast result of the inaugural season of Popstars, the German adaptation of the international reality show of the same name. Submitted by Plate, Faiella's version of "Daylight" found general approval among the members of the newly formed No Angels, and became one of several songs they recorded for their debut album Elle'ments (2001).
The Allmusic site awarded the album 3 stars stating "Parts of the second solo album by Prestige Records' house drummer, Idris Muhammad, are an even poppier affair than Black Rhythm Revolution, with a mellow soul-jazz feel replacing the slight Latin tinge of the earlier album... "The Peace and Rhythm Suite" is a side-long suite consisting of two long, spacy compositions that predate the ambient house scene by nearly two decades yet sound entirely of a piece with that style. Long, droning, sustained chords on a variety of wind and reed instruments float above Muhammad's percussion, which ebbs and flows in a free, almost arrhythmic way through most of the piece. Fans of The Orb or Brian Eno will find it an old hat, but for early-'70s jazz, this was downright revolutionary".Mason, S. Allmusic listing accessed July 1, 2013.
But it does so in a different register, setting [Solange's] deft soprano to an updated version of psychedelic funk and soul." Emily Mackay from The Guardian wrote, "[Solange has] long been engagingly outspoken on issues of race, and from the title down, A Seat at the Table is an intensely personal testament to black experience and culture; the likes of 'F.U.B.U.,' 'Mad,' 'Don't Touch My Hair' and interludes in which her parents talk about their encounters with racism go deep. Sonically, the album's take on modern psychedelic soul is languid, rich, lifted by airy, Minnie Riperton–esque trills on the gorgeous likes of 'Cranes in the Sky' or the darkly glimmering 'Don't Wish Me Well'; it's a world away from 2008's peppier, poppier Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams or 2012's indie-crossover-hit True EP. Guest spots from artists as diverse as Lil Wayne, Sampha, Tweet and Kelela only serve to amplify Solange's fascinating voice.
Having encountered difficulty in both writing and determining a direction for the album, the band chose to record and sequence it as a "left side" — four of the band's poppier songs plus an instrumental — and a "right side" (experimental work including extended and atonal improvisations in the tradition of the mid-1970s band, plus as the third part of "Larks' Tongues in Aspic"). Three of a Perfect Pair peaked at No. 30 in the UK and No. 58 in the US, with "Three of a Perfect Pair" and "Sleepless" being released as singles. The 2001 remaster of the album included "the other side", a collection of remixes and improvisation out-takes plus Levin's tongue-in-cheek vocal piece, "The King Crimson Barbershop". The last concert of the Three of a Perfect Pair tour, at the Spectrum in Montreal, Canada on 11 July 1984, was recorded and released in 1998 as Absent Lovers: Live in Montreal.
MTV's web page on the Fastbacks says that estimates at the number of Fastbacks drummers "range from 12 to 20." For most of the band's last decade, Mike Musburger filled this role, but other Fastbacks drummers before him (or when he took occasional breaks) included Bloch himself, Richard Stuverud (perhaps best known from War Babies, Fifth Angel and his collaborations with Pearl Jam's Jeff Ament, including Three Fish, Tres Mts. and RNDM), Nate Johnson and Rusty Willoughby (both of whom also played in both Flop and Pure Joy), John Moen (of the Dharma Bums, later of Steven Malkmus's Jicks and The Decemberists), Jason Finn (of the Presidents of the United States of America), Dan Peters of Mudhoney, and Tad Hutchison of the Young Fresh Fellows. Several of these people also served at times as drummers in The Squirrels, a similarly long-lived band, and the Fastbacks' sometime label- mates on PopLlama Records, who bring a similar mix of strong musicianship and punk attitude to even poppier material.
Jamelia recorded her second studio album, Thank You, in 2002 and early 2003 following the birth of her daughter Teja in 2001. The first single lifted from Thank You was the R&B-influenced; "Bout", on which she collaborated with American rap star Rah Digga; it debuted at number 37 in the UK. The second single, the much poppier "Superstar", became Jamelia's highest peaking at the time when it peaked at number three, and earned the spot of the 26th best-selling of 2003 in the UK. It remains Jamelia's only single to receive a BPI certification.Certified Awards Search BPI Parent album Thank You, released shortly after "Superstar", was widely expected to replicate the single's success, but entered the UK chart at number 65. Subsequently, a number of record producers worked with Jamelia on a re-release of the album that featured new artwork and track listing, including two new songs: her collaboration with Coldplay's Chris Martin and DJ K Staveley, "See It in a Boy's Eyes", and "DJ".
Finally, the band released its long awaited follow-up to Bag of Hammers: entitled Ampalanche, it released first on vinyl through Italian label Vincebus Eruptum in January 2016, and then in April of that year, it was released digitally online, paired with a 49-minute bonus track: "Vi, de Druknede (We, the Drowned)", a droning wordless group improvisation based on twin electronic tambouras. In July 2017, the group contributed side one to the Vincebus Eruptum label's third Psychedelic Battles split LP with Colt38, including their final masterpiece, "Jolakottur," the lyrics of which were derived from Icelandic folklore. Shortly thereafter, the band split, with lead singer/songwriter/guitarist Clinton Heider moving on to new adventures, including playing guitar with Mlee Marie's band Hearts of Animals, and the rest of the group re-teaming with earlier keyboardist/vocalist Carol Sandin Cooley, now calling themselves the Cryptographers, with Medina and Sandin Cooley taking over singing and songwriting duties, sporting a somewhat poppier sound informed by krautrock, indie rock, and the Velvet Underground.
" Additionally, Gangl found "Wilson's refreshingly forthright lyrics and ability to find light in even the darkest of themes combine to offer a modicum of relief from this latter-segment deficit." Gangl concluded with writing that "Carry Me doesn't quite qualify as groundbreaking or fillerless, it is still an engaging, thought-provoking, and ultimately uplifting collection of songs that should, if there's any justice in the world, go great lengths toward earning its talented creator an evening's worth of peaceful, uninterrupted sleep." Louder Than the Music's Jono Davies alluded to how this release "moved away a bit too much from the acoustic mid-rock genre into a slightly more poppier, catchy chorus kind of album." Kevin Davis of New Release Tuesday evoked how "Carry Me paints a refreshingly relevant musical palate that frames its message beautifully", and noted that the album "is sure to connect with all listeners who like catchy songs filled with truth and yearning for God." In addition, Davis found that Wilson "invites you into his life in such an authentic and relatable way, you’ll feel like you are a lifelong friend after you hear this album.
Barton and Scheff would go on to form Translator in 1979 with bassist Larry Dekker. After playing around L.A. for a few months Robert Darlington joined as the second guitarist–songwriter and the group moved to San Francisco, where they gained an enthusiastic local following and soon signed a recording deal with Howie Klein's 415 Records. They released four albums and the hit single written by Steve, "Everywhere That I'm Not" which was the most requested song on San Francisco radio station KUSF for six months after its release. Up-and-coming producer David Kahne oversaw the band’s first album Heartbeats and Triggers, which was notable for its blend of folk-rock guitars and thoughtful lyrics, delivered in a post-punk way. Kahne also helmed the poppier follow-up No Time Like Now which received a rave from Musician magazine that said Translator were “the only rockers left who are capable of writing love songs that are neither cliches nor abstractions.” Translator tapped Ramones producer Ed Stasium for 1985's psychedelic-tinged Translator LP, “just to see what would happen if we worked with someone else”, Barton says.
