The band at that time had consisted of Evans, Gibbins, Jackson, Kailing and Dacus. In 2003, and again in 2006, two separate CDs of related Apple Publishing music, 94 Baker Street, and An Apple A Day, were released. The CDs contain nine songs by the pre-Badfinger Iveys. In 2008, another CD of Apple-related songs, Treacle Toffee World: Further Adventures into the Pop Psych Sounds from the Apple Era 1967–1969, included two more Iveys demos.

The Middle East has been described as playing within "a multitude of genres and styles". Elements of country, blues, punk, rock, folk, chamber pop, psych folk, post-rock and ambience can be found throughout its music. Allmusic describes the band's sound as "lush, orchestral indie pop that blends the epic atmospherics of modern rock outfits like Múm and Sigur Rós with the earthy simplicity of modern indie folk". Instruments used include guitar—both electric and acoustic, drums, hand percussion, piano, glockenspiel, banjo and trumpet.

The duo began while they were friends and classmates at W. W. Samuell High School in Dallas, Texas, United States. Seals and Coley performed first as part of local cover bands, including Playboys Five and Theze Few. They recorded a series of demos in Nashville as The Shimmerers, but their prospects ended with the death of their producer, before he could secure a recording deal for them. Their next grouping was Dallas pop/psych group Southwest F.O.B. ("Freight on Board"), whose material has been re-released on CD by the Sundazed label.

On 2 April 2013, "Rastus Ravel (Is A Mean Old Man)", was re-released as track 4 on Piccadilly Sunshine, Part Twelve – British Pop Psych and Other Flavours 1967-1971, on the bootleg Particles label. On 11 April 2013, Paul Martin reviewed Piccadilly Sunshine, Part Twelve in Shindig magazine, and wrote, "So here's another hamper of low calorie sooth-sayers with pictures to paint. The indulgence food in this particular feast comes from Heatwave's “phat” mod-soul funker, "Rastus Ravel"". On 24 April 2013, Newtracks (Germany) selected "Rastus Ravel (Is Mean Old Man)" for the music game, Bands, for Facebook and mobile devices.

F. R. David began his career as Robert Fitoussi, a Tunisian-born Jew who was a singer-songwriter and guitarist with French garage band Les Trèfles. After one EP, they mutated into Les Boots, but achieved very little commercial success. Adopting his new stage name, he went solo in 1967 and recorded some orchestral pop psych with Michel Colombier, including a version of the Beatles' "Strawberry Fields Forever" ("Il Est Plus Facile"). He enjoyed minor hits with the Éric Charden penned "Symphonie" and a cover of the Bee Gees' "Sir Geoffrey Saved the World", but this success did not last.

Apple received a large number of demo tapes; some songs were published, some were issued on other labels and only Benny Gallagher & Lyle were retained as in- house writers before going on to co-found McGuinness Flint. Many of these demos have been collected on a series of CDs released by Cherry Red Records. They are entitled 94 Baker Street, An Apple for the Day, Treacle Toffee World, Lovers from the Sky: Pop Psych from the Apple Era 1968-1971 and 94 Baker Street Revisited: Poptastic Sounds from the Apple Era 1967-1968. Apple Books was largely inactive and had very few releases.

The extreme rarity of this album has pushed up its collectability rating to where, in 2007, a shabby scratched copy was sold on eBay for £1,200 and since then (in 2009 & 2010) two other copies have sold in excess of £2000. It is regarded by collectors as one of the most valuable pop/psych albums of all time. In 1998, a CD and LP reissue circulated with alternative artwork. In 2009, it was reissued again on vinyl LP (with the identical artwork to the original) on Acme Records while an expanded CD was released on Cherry Red's psychedelic imprint, Grapefruit, with various bonus tracks and the band's approval.

The Luck of Eden Hall is a pop/Psych/prog band established in Chicago in 1989, with releases on many record labels including Limited Potential (USA), Fruits de Mer Records (UK), Mega Dodo (UK), Headspin Records (NL), Vincebus Eruptum (IT), and has appeared in magazines including Shindig, Prog, Classic Rock, Goldmine, and AP. The story of the Luck of Edenhall is told in the 2004 manga Bartender. It is also the namesake for the protagonists's bar, Bar Eden Hall. The legend of the Edenhall Cup is mentioned in the first chapter of Anthony Trollope's novel The Little House at Allington, saying that guests had to drink from the cup regardless of the danger that it might break.

" Stephen Thomas Erlewine from AllMusic gave a more mixed review, rating the album three stars out of five, saying that "Ultimately, this isn't an album of purpose, it's a collection of moments, and it has just enough good ones to solidify Demi Lovato's comeback." Jody Rosen from Rolling Stone awarded the album three stars out of five, saying that "It's predictable stuff—sassy songs, lovelorn songs, a couple of pop-psych pep talks—but Lovato is good company, and her voice has gustiness and character." Melissa Maerz from Entertainment Weekly, however, gave the album a mixed review and graded it C+, saying that "it's too bad that her new album Demi, sounds like such a decisive return to teen pop. Transformed from an edgier young woman back into America's sweetheart.

Drift Code received positive reviews from critics. The aggregate review site Metacritic assigns a score of 79 out of 100 based on 13 reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews". Heather Phares of AllMusic wrote that "the way Webb blends folk, jazz, classic vocal pop, psych and prog ... in combinations that are elegant but too strange to be tasteful echoes latter-day Talk Talk, but there's a rustic eccentricity to songs such as "Light the Light" and "Martian Garden" that makes this album singular even within his body of work", concluding "Drift Code is the sound of an artist coming into his own on his own time". Andy Crump of Paste wrote "what Webb has created is so rich, so delightfully off-kilter, that an auxiliary listen is necessary the same way another sip of pickleback is necessary".

Samuell High School classmate and longtime friend John Ford Coley to perform first as part of Dallas pop/psych group Southwest F.O.B. ('Free On Board'), whose material has been re-released on CD by the Sundazed label. As England Dan & John Ford Coley, Seals made use of a nickname he had acquired in childhood for an affected English accent he assumed due to his love of The Beatles. In 1970 they were signed by A&M; records, but a lack of US hits led to their being dropped two years later. Seals later recalled that this led to a period of severe financial challenge which ended only when the duo signed to Big Tree Records and had a run of six US Top 40 hits from the mid-1970s, beginning with "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight", the pair's biggest hit, reaching No. 2 in 1976 and becoming their only gold single.
