For instance, my collection of stories titled Samuel Johnson Is Indignant contains fifty-six pieces, including what could roughly be described as meditations; parables or fables; an oral history with hiccups; an interrogation about jury duty; a traditional, though brief, story about a family trip; a diary about thyroid disease; excerpts from a bad translation of a poorly written biography of Marie Curie; a fairly traditional narrative about my father and his furnace, though ending in an accidental poem; and, scattered through the book, brief prose pieces of just one or two lines as well as one or two pieces with broken lines.

A "good" candidate would be someone who took four years of science, English, math, and a language; they'd have at least a few AP and honors courses with mostly A's, maybe a B or two; they'd play a sport or be on the debate team or have an after-school job or, ideally, do a bunch of these things; they'd have interviewed with one of us or with any alumni; and their essay wouldn't be breathtakingly dull and/or pointless (which is, in fact, an extremely high bar for college admissions essays; I read so many poorly written accounts of overcoming sports injuries and life-changing service trips to foreign countries that I was bored to tears).

I've actually spent a good deal of time this summer wondering if privileged straight women are OK: while watching the new season of Big Little Lies, in which the complex web of female camaraderie and solidarity established last season has fallen apart in poorly written episodes that don't do justice to what I'd believed about these women's relationships; while watching Ari Aster's Midsommar, in which poor Florence Pugh's character has a heartily cathartic screamfest with female cult members when faced with the actions of her dumb, shitty boyfriend; while reading Taffy Brodesser-Akner's fabulous new novel, Fleishman Is in Trouble, in which straight marriage seems just as ghastly as I've always imagined it to be.
