For the Wild Card Game, the Pirates started Edinson Vólquez, who had a 13–7 win–loss record and 3.04 earned run average (ERA) in 31 games started during the 2014 season. Hurdle picked him over the team's other available starters – Francisco Liriano (who would have been pitching on only three days' rest) and Jeff Locke, who pitched erratically throughout the year.
From June 4 to 25, Price had five consecutive starts with at least ten strikeouts, becoming only the eighth pitcher in major league history to do so. On July 6, Price was named to his fourth All-Star team; he did not participate in this All-Star game due to pitching in a game two days prior, avoiding pitching on only one day of rest. He was replaced by Fernando Rodney. Before a July 31 trade to the Detroit Tigers, Price had a record of 11–8, with a 3.11 ERA, 189 strikeouts, and 23 walks in 23 starts with the Rays.
Bob Gibson The seventh game finally matched up the aces, Bob Gibson against Jim Lonborg. Lonborg was pitching on two-days rest, while Gibson had rested an extra day since his last outing. Only once before had a seventh game of a Series brought together starting pitchers who both had 2–0 records in the Series—in 1925, when the Washington Senators' Walter Johnson pitched against the Pittsburgh Pirates' Vic Aldridge. St. Louis catcher Tim McCarver said the Boston newspapers made the Cardinals angry with their headline "Lonborg and Champagne" that basically declared before Game 7 that Lonborg would win.
The series switched to Citi Field in New York for game three. A three-run single by Yasmani Grandal gave the Dodgers a quick 3–0 lead but Brett Anderson performed poorly allowing a bases clearing double by Curtis Granderson and a homer by Travis d'Arnaud. Alex Wood subsequently gave up a three-run homer to Yoenis Céspedes and the Dodgers were blown out 13–7. In Game four, pitching on three days rest, Kershaw allowed only three hits over seven innings and Kenley Jansen picked up a four out save as the Dodgers evened up the series with a 3–1 win.
A most notable failure occurred in the 13th inning, with two out and Keith Lockhart on first base and Jones at the plate. With Lockhart running, Jones laced an offering from Dotel into the right field corner. But the ball was cut off by Melvin Mora before it reached the wall, and Mora's strong relay throw, via Edgardo Alfonzo, cut down Lockhart at the plate and ended the inning. Pitching on his 25th birthday, local villain John Rocker entered the game in the bottom of the 13th inning to a loud chorus of boos and several projectiles hurled in his direction.
Kazmir attended Cypress Falls High School in Harris County, Texas, where he was a two-sport athlete, through his sophomore year, pitching on the baseball team and starting at quarterback on the junior varsity football team. During one stretch on the high school baseball diamond, Kazmir threw five no- hitters in six games (three consecutive no-hitters, a one-hit game, followed by two more no-hitters). As a senior, he struck out 172 batters in 75 innings pitched and had an earned run average (ERA) of 0.37. By the time he graduated, Kazmir was averaging around 17 to 18 strikeouts per game.
In August 1914, the Millers traded Rondeau to Washington Senators. Clark Griffith of the Senators parted with four major league players in exchange for Rondeau, making him the most expensive recruit for the 1915 Senators. Rondeau appeared in only 14 games with the Senators in 1915, 11 as the team's starting left fielder and the others as a pinch-hitter, as his batting average plummeted to a career low .175 against big league pitching. On May 10, 1915, after a poor performance in his tryout with the Senators, Rondeau was sold by the Senators to the Minneapolis Millers.
On a day in which it rained much of the day but stopped early enough so that the lack of a dome did not delay the game, the Cardinals won to clinch the championship four games to one, making this the first five-game series since the Yankees–Mets Series in . The starter for Detroit was game 1 loser Justin Verlander and the Cardinals starter was game 2 loser Jeff Weaver. Weaver got an extra day of rest to avoid pitching on three days rest. Justin Verlander pitched a sloppy first inning for Detroit, walking three and tying a World Series record for a single inning by throwing two wild pitches.
In 1935, Bithorn competed in the III Central American and Caribbean Games held in San Salvador, El Salvador, helping his Puerto Rican teammates bring home a silver medal in volleyball and a bronze in basketball. By this time, he had already begun making a name for himself in baseball in 1932, while pitching on a team of nativos playing in the city of Guayama. The Puerto Ricans faced the Richmond BBC, a squad composed entirely of continental American players, including slugging first baseman and future Hall of Famer Johnny Mize, as the 16-year- old Bithorn led his team to a 10–1 victory over the visiting club.
He was declared the 24th-best prospect in the majors that season. In the month of April, Adenhart had a 4–0 record with a 0.87 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 31 innings. As a result, he was brought up to the Angels' major league roster, and was scheduled to make his debut on May 1, pitching on three days' rest. Shortstop Maicer Izturis was placed on the disabled list when Adenhart was brought up. Adenhart pitching for the Salt Lake Bees in 2008 Adenhart made his Major League debut as the starting pitcher against the Oakland Athletics at home in Angel Stadium of Anaheim.
On the strength of an eight- decision winning streak, he was selected to the All-Star team for the first time. He threw a three hit shutout against the Phillies on July 5; Antonelli had also allowed three hits in a shutout victory over them on April 25. Pitching on three day's rest on July 20, on a day when it was over 100 degrees Fahrenheit at Crosley Field in Cincinnati, Antonelli showed what sportswriter John Drebinger called "an extraordinary display of stamina," pitching all 13 innings of a 2–1 victory over the Cincinnati Redlegs. He won 11 straight decisions from May 25 through August 1.
With the score 8-5 and runners on 1st and 3rd, Lilly refused to give him the ball. Eventually, he reluctantly left the mound and later feuded with Gibbons in the locker room, though Gibbons maintained no punches were thrown. Lilly filed for free agency at the end of the 2006 season, and alongside Barry Zito, Jason Schmidt and Jeff Suppan, was one of the most sought-after free agent pitchers, partially due to the thin market for starting pitching. On the morning of December 6, 2006, he informed the Blue Jays that he would not be returning to the club, thus rejecting a four- year, $40 million deal.
Sunday, October 12, 1986, at Shea Stadium in Queens, New York Astros' ace Mike Scott, pitching on three days rest, was dominant once again in Game 4\. The right-hander again pitched a complete game on a three-hitter to earn his second victory of the series in Houston's 3–1 triumph. Mets' starter Sid Fernandez allowed just three runs in six innings, but surrendered a two-run home run to Alan Ashby and a laser-beam home run to Dickie Thon to account for all the offense the Astros needed. Danny Heep drove in Mookie Wilson with a sacrifice fly in the eighth to account for the Mets' only run.
Nathan Eovaldi pitching on May 25, 2015. The Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 4–2 on May 2, during which Andrew Miller had set Yankees club history by securing nine saves in the first 23 games the Yankees had played in a season. Mariano Rivera, the former Yankees closer who had retired following the 2013 season, had not even performed this feat during his 19-year career. It was the same game that Alex Rodriguez hit a pinch-hit home run off of Red Sox pitcher Junichi Tazawa, his first as a pinch-hitter, and tied Willie Mays for fourth on the all-time home run list at 660 homers.
In many instances, these games were shortened by regulations such as darkness (in an era before lights), rules to make doubleheaders seven innings (the second game, or both games, may be seven innings; still used in amateur and lower-level professional leagues) in order to avoid darkness from shortening games, or curfews, especially when teams needed to travel on regularly scheduled trains, buses, or flights (in the era before chartered flights). On rare occasions, the team that pitched a no- hitter also lost the game while pitching on the road - resulting in only 8 innings pitched because the opposing team did not bat in the bottom of the 9th inning.
He was also the first pitcher in history to give up at least seven runs in back-to-back postseason starts (his previous one was Game 6 of the 2013 National League Championship Series). Pitching on short rest in Game 4, he would again be dominant, but again would take the loss after giving up a 3-run home run to Matt Adams in the 7th inning. It was the first home run Kershaw had allowed in his career to a left- handed batter off his curveball. Kershaw was honored after the season with player of the year awards from both The Sporting News and Baseball America.
A series of normal leg spinners or topspinners, with their dropping looping flight, will have the batsman used to the ball pitching on a shorter length. The batsman may wrongly assume that the flipper will drop and loop like a normal overspinning delivery, resulting in the ball pitching under the bat and going on to either hit the stumps or result in leg before wicket. Much of the effectiveness of the flipper is attributable to the "pop", that is, the extra pace and change in trajectory that is imparted to the ball when it is squeezed out of the bowler's hand. Occasionally, the term 'flipper' has been used to describe other types of deliveries.
On August 7, 2007, the Yankees purchased Chamberlain's contract, elevating him to the major leagues for the first time in his career. In his debut, a Yankees victory over the Toronto Blue Jays, Chamberlain struck out the first batter he faced and went on to pitch two scoreless innings, striking out two. Chamberlain's usage in games was initially restricted by what were referred to as the "Joba Rules", which prevented him from pitching on consecutive days and gave him an additional day of rest for each inning pitched in an outing. On August 30, 2007, during a game against the Boston Red Sox, Chamberlain threw two pitches over the head of Kevin Youkilis.
In the bottom of the 14th, Ortiz would again seal the win with a game-winning RBI single that brought home Damon. The game set the record for longest postseason game in terms of time (5 hours and 49 minutes) and for the longest American League Championship Series game (14 innings), though the former has since been broken. With the series returning to Yankee Stadium for Game 6, the improbable comeback continued, with Curt Schilling pitching on an ankle that had three sutures wrapped in a bloody white sock (red with a blood stain). Schilling struck out four, walked none, and only allowed one run over seven innings to lead the team to victory.
Score would tell Cleveland sportswriter Terry Pluto (for The Curse of Rocky Colavito) that, in 1958, after pitching and winning a few games and feeling better than he'd felt in a long time, he tore a tendon in his arm while pitching on a damp night against the Washington Senators and sat out the rest of the season. In 1959, he shifted his pitching motion in a bid to avoid another, similar injury. "The reason my motion changed", Score told Pluto, "was because I hurt my elbow, and I overcompensated for it and ended up with some bad habits." As a result of the changes Score made in his pitching delivery, his velocity dropped and he incurred further injuries.
Sams earned the Player of the Year Award and made her first All-Star Team as an outfielder and pitcher that year, becoming the only player in AAGPBL history to be so honored. Muskegon went on to win the regular season title with a 69–43 record, but failed to the Racine Belles in the first round. In 1948 the AAGPBL expanded to a historical peak of ten teams divided into Eastern and Western Divisions, and made the switch from side-arm to overhand pitching. On July 12, Sams opened the year by hurling a 3–0 no-hitter against the Springfield Sallies, one of the league’s two new clubs, along with the Chicago Colleens.

Bumgarner pitching on June 21, 2011 Bumgarner was 0–5 with a 4.58 ERA in his first seven starts of the 2011 season. Despite pitching at least six innings and giving up more than one earned run only once in his five starts from April 27 through May 19, 2011, it was not until the 19th that he got his first win, collecting an ERA of 3.71 for the season at that point. On May 19, 2011, at Dodger Stadium, in a 3–1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers, Bumgarner pitched before allowing a run in the ninth inning, nearly throwing his first career complete game shutout and outdueling 2009 All-Star Dodger pitcher Chad Billingsley. He threw a career-high 89 strikes on the outing.
Steven Matz pitching on July 7, 2018. Matz tied a career-high with nine strikeouts against the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 26, but followed that performance with a July 31 start against the Washington Nationals in which he was pulled after recording two outs and allowing seven runs on eight hits in of an inning, marking the shortest start of Matz's career, and matching his career-high in runs allowed. The game ended with a 24–4 loss, the most lopsided in Mets' history, and caused Matz's season ERA rise to from 3.79 to 4.35, compared to 3.21 before the All-Star break. Matz was placed on the disabled list for two weeks in early August due to a flexor pronator strain in his left elbow.
On April 14, 2018, the Pittsburgh Pirates claimed Romero off waivers. He appeared in two games for the Pirates, hitting a double in his first at-bat, but in the four innings he pitched he gave up five runs, three of them unearned, on seven hits, giving him an ERA with Pittsburgh of 7.50. In order to make room on their roster for the major-league debut of pitching prospect Nick Kingham, the Pirates initially decided to designate Romero for assignment on April 29, but within hours changed their minds after Romero and his agent informed them that Romero had injured his shoulder while pitching on April 25. The Pirates instead opted to place him on the 10-day disabled list.
5:07 p.m. (EDT) at Miller Park in Milwaukee, Wisconsin The Brewers started Game 2 on a high note with Ryan Braun hitting a two-run homer in the first inning off of Daniel Hudson, but starter Zack Greinke, pitching on three days' rest, allowed a leadoff home run to Paul Goldschmidt in the second; In the third, Braun doubled with two outs, then scored on Prince Fielder's single before Fielder scored on Rickie Weeks's triple. Greinke gave up a solo home run to Chris Young in the fourth, then a two-run home run to Justin Upton in the fifth and left with the game in a 4–4 tie. In the sixth, Jerry Hairston doubled with one out.
Things appeared to settle down on September 13 when Bunning beat the Giants for his 17th win, and Short and Bennett followed up with wins over the Houston Colt .45s. However, Bunning replaced Culp for the start on the 16th for the last game against Houston and, pitching on two days' rest, gave up a two-run home run by Rusty Staub and lasted only 4⅓ innings (charged with 4 more runs).National League Standings 17 September 1964 On September 20, Bunning beat the Dodgers in Los Angeles, 3–2, throwing a five-hitter. Bunning remembered that the club had been shaky; the Phillies almost blew the game in the ninth when Vic Power made an error, leading to two unearned runs.
Crowe made his return to pitching on June 1, 2016, starting the home opener for the Lexington County Blowfish and showing off a sharp slider and a fastball that reached 95 mph. The Indians again selected him in the 2016 MLB draft, using their 21st- round pick on him, but Crowe again did not sign, returning to South Carolina as a redshirt junior. Crowe led the Gamecocks in strikeouts while posting a 3.41 ERA across 92⅓ innings in 2017 before being drafted with the 65th overall pick by the Nationals in the 2017 MLB Draft, who were known for selecting amateur players who had previously had or needed to undergo Tommy John surgery. Crowe received a $946,500 signing bonus from the Nationals, in line with the slot value of the selection.
Largely on account of the perfect game and three 19-win seasons (1964–1966) with the Phillies, today Bunning is memorialized in the Philadelphia Baseball Wall of Fame (1984), and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans' Committee in 1996. Thirty years later, Bunning, by then a member of Congress, talked about The "Phold" to David Halberstam and said that to understand what happened, you had to be there and be caught up in the emotions and excitement of the pennant race. Also, there was a belief by the Phillies that they could prevail simply by sheer will. Pitching on short rest, the injuries, and the reality of pitching with a good deal more fatigue than he recognized all led to a loss of confidence.
Pitching on three days of rest after throwing 107 pitches in six innings in Game 1 and making his first relief appearance since a single appearance in relief for the Arizona Diamondbacks during the 2017 season, Corbin gave up a single to the Dodgers′ leadoff hitter, center fielder Cody Bellinger, but followed that by striking out shortstop Corey Seager and left fielder A. J. Pollock in consecutive at-bats. Then Corbin's slider failed him, and his outing unraveled. Pinch-hitter David Freese singled, advancing Bellinger to third, and catcher Russell Martin doubled on a 2–2 count, scoring Bellinger and Freese to give Los Angeles a 3–2 lead. Corbin walked pinch hitter Chris Taylor on five pitches, then gave up a double on a 1–2 count to pinch hitter Enrique Hernández that scored Martin and Taylor and stretched the Dodgers′ lead to 5–2.
Any grass on the pitch in the game's first over, for example, may have disappeared by the twentieth over due to wear. As almost all deliveries bowled will bounce off the pitch towards the batsmen (the only exception would be a, usually accidental, full toss), the state and type of a cricket pitch can significantly affect the outcome of a match. For example, a dusty, very dry, pitch will favour spin bowling because the ball will grip more on a dusty pitch - giving the team with the superior spin bowlers a significant advantage in the match. The state of the pitch is so important to the outcome of a cricket match that teams can be fined or docked points if they produce a poor pitch that is deemed unfit for normal play, or seen to be a danger to batsmen by the ball behaving erratically when pitching on it, and players can face disciplinary action if they are seen to be deliberately damaging or altering the pitch in ways that are not allowed by the Laws of Cricket.
The Nationals struggled at times on offense, posting the third-worst batting average in the National League ahead of only the Braves and Milwaukee Brewers amid poor performances at the plate from center fielder Michael A. Taylor, left fielder Jayson Werth, and first baseman Ryan Zimmerman, despite strong hitting from Harper and second baseman Daniel Murphy, an off-season acquisition who hit in 12 straight games during the month and had 11 multi-hit games. The team also suffered injuries to regular players, with Ben Revere, acquired in the off-season to play center field, straining his oblique during his first at-bat of the season on April 4 and ending up on the disabled list, and reliever Matt Belisle, another off- season pickup, being placed on the disabled list after straining his calf while pitching on April 26. Outfielder Matt den Dekker and reliever Sammy Solis were called up from the Syracuse Chiefs, the Nationals' Class AAA International League affiliate, to replace them on the roster. Amid an offensive lull and the injury to Belisle, Washington was swept at home late in the month by the division rival Phillies for their first series loss of the year.
The Nationals finished July having won four series and lost two, including the three-game set against the Cardinals that began the previous month, while splitting two. Coming out of St. Louis, they swept two games against the Mets (with the third game of the series postponed by rain), split a four-game set with the Braves, swept the Reds in four games after the All-Star break, split a two-game series visiting the Angels, took two out of three against both the Diamondbacks and the Brewers, and dropped two of three to the Rockies before heading to Miami to play the division rival Marlins for three games beginning July 31. In that game, the Nationals shut out the Marlins 1–0 behind eight no-hit innings from their starter González, pitching on what would have been the 25th birthday of his friend, the late Marlins pitcher José Fernández. With the win, the Nationals improved to 63–41, finishing the month of July up 14 games on the second-place Marlins in the National League East Division and with the second- best overall record in the National League.
In , Darling won a spot in the starting rotation and maintained a spot there almost uninterrupted until . While his early walk percentages were poor—he even led the league in walks in —he never again showed the terrible walk percentages he had while playing AAA ball. With Darling and Terrell each getting their first long-term chances in the Majors and with the debut of young star and eventual Rookie of the Year Dwight Gooden, the Mets went from second-worst in the majors in 1983 to fourth-best in the majors in 1984; the Mets finished second- best in their division and missed the postseason. Darling had difficulty pitching on the road in 1984 compared to pitching at pitcher-friendly Shea Stadium; his road ERA was more than 50% higher than his home ERA. He had a streak of seven wins in seven starts in June (5–0) and July (1.88 ERA) including a pair of complete game four-hit shutouts, but the other two-thirds of the season were not nearly as successful. The Mets were in first place at the end of July but Darling's 2–6 record the rest of the way was little help, and the Chicago Cubs won the division by 6 ½ games.
