Runyon IV organisms are rapid growing for mycobacteria (colonies in 5 days). They do not produce pigment. Mycobacterium fortuitum, Mycobacterium peregrinum, Mycobacterium abscessus, Mycobacterium chelonae, Mycobacterium thermoresistibile Some rapidly growing mycobacteria are considered "late-pigmenting".

Scytalidium ganodermopthorum is an anthroconidial ascomycete fungus in the Scytalidium genus. It is also known by its teleomorph name Xylogone ganodermopthora. It is the cause of yellow rot in lingzhi mushrooms and it is used in spalting as a pigmenting fungi.

Afamelanotide is in phase II and III clinical trials for vitiligo and other skin diseases. A medication for rheumatoid arthritis, tofacitinib, has been tested for the treatment of vitiligo. In October 1992, a scientific report was published of successfully transplanting melanocytes to vitiligo affected areas, effectively re-pigmenting the region. The procedure involved taking a thin layer of pigmented skin from the person's gluteal region.

A mole can be either subdermal (under the skin) or a pigmented growth on the skin, formed mostly of a type of cell known as a melanocyte. The high concentration of the body's pigmenting agent, melanin, is responsible for their dark color. Moles are a member of the family of skin lesions known as nevi and can occur in all mammalian species especially humans, dogs, and horses.

Due to its properties as an insoluble pigment, this fungal pigment is being examined as a naturally-derived aniline dye replacement. There are several methods of pigmenting wood with this fungus. In the cut-wood inoculation method, at 12 weeks, the yellow pigment completely saturated the wood samples. According to the woodchip-agar/chemical solvent extraction method created by Robinson, dichloromethane is the best solvent for extracting this pigment.

Prevotella intermedia and Prevotella nigrescens were associated with inflammatory periodontal diseases, such as pregnancy gingivitis, acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis and adult periodontitis. Together with Porphyromonas gingivalis they are known as black-pigmenting anaerobes. All three require haemin as the source of iron for their growth. These species were shown to bind lactoferrin that is released together with the contents of neutrophils during inflammation and bleeding in periodontitis patients.

These are localized white spots on skin which may affect any area of the body, but these white spots are quite stable lesions. In the majority of patients, the lesions are not completely achromic, but are hypopigmented and resemble splashed paint. The individual lesions are permanent and there are no effective therapies for re- pigmenting this nevus. If there is hair in an affected area, it is usually colourless or white.

In 2005 Kanost was a member of a small research team that suggested that silencing the enzyme laccase-2 in a beetle prevents cuticle tanning, the process of hardening and pigmenting the insect's exoskeleton.
