The song is an instrumental that was recorded entirely on Gorillaz co-founder Damon Albarn's Apple iPad during the American leg of the Escape to Plastic Beach World Tour in October 2010. The "Phoner to Arizona" video—a compilation of footage and images taken from the tour and the phase—was posted on YouTube on 22 December as a way to promote the album.

The album was first announced on 20 December 2010 as a holiday gift to fans. On 22 December, the music video for "Phoner to Arizona", which consists of a compilation of footage and images taken from the tour and the phase, was posted on YouTube as a way to promote the album. The album was first released to stream for free on the Gorillaz website on 25 December; it was available as a download for paying members of the band's Sub-Division club, a premium access campaign the band ran throughout 2010. The album was given an official release on 19 April 2011.

Following a petty squabble on the road, Alice is killed by a loutish pair of normies. The group buries her and arrives in Clay's hometown of Kent Pond, where they discover notes from Johnny which tell them Clay's estranged wife Sharon was turned into a phoner, but their son survived for several days, before he and the other normies were prompted by the phoners to head to the supposedly cell phone-free Kashwak. Clay has another nightmare which reveals that once there, the normie refugees were all exposed to the Pulse. He remains intent on finding his son, but after meeting another group of flock-killers, Tom and Jordan decide to avoid the ceremonial executions the phoners have planned.

One such example of an exception to this is in Plastic Beach, where Murdoc claims to have mainly programmed the drums himself using Gorillaz drummer Russel Hobb's Hip-hop Machine, as Russel was absent for the recording of Plastic Beach. Murdoc has occasionally contributed vocals to Gorillaz songs. He claims in the Gorillaz press interview CD We Are The Dury that he is the vocalist on the Demon Days track White Light, and has been portrayed in the fifth installment of his radio show Pirate Radio as the robotic voice on the track Phoner to Arizona from The Fall. His pet raven Cortez is attributed to the wailing guitar on the Demon Days track O Green World.
