A pharmacon or pharmakon (from Greek: (φάρμακον), adapted from pharmacos) is a biologically active substance. It is used more broadly than the term drug because it includes endogenous substances, and biologically active substances which are not used as drugs. Typically the word pharmacon includes pharmacological agonists and antagonists, but also enzyme inhibitors (such as monoamine oxidase inhibitors). Spelt with a "k", is acceptable in English, but more common in German.

By the end of 2011, MabCent had tested about 200,000 extracts, finding several hundred "hits". Through further research and development, some of these hits will become valuable "leads", i.e. characterized compounds known to possess biological effects of interest. A cat eating grass - an example of zoopharmacognosy Zoopharmacognosy is a behaviour in which non-human animals apparently self-medicate by selecting and ingesting or topically applying plants, soils, insects, and psychoactive drugs to prevent or reduce the harmful effects of pathogens and toxins. The term derives from Greek roots zoo ("animal"), pharmacon ("drug, medicine"), and gnosy ("knowing"). An example of zoopharmacognosy occurs when dogs eat grass to induce vomiting. However, the behaviour is more diverse than this.

Jan Raa (born 11 October 1939) is a Norwegian biologist. Raa was a professor at the University of Tromsø from 1972 to 1988, and has an honorary degree at the same university. After his tenure at the University of Tromsø he was a director at the Directorate of Fisheries Institute of Nutrition, research director at Fiskeriforskning and developer of the company Biotec Pharmacon. He is a fellow of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters and the Norwegian Academy of Technological Sciences.

Pharmacology is a branch of medicine and pharmaceutical sciences which is concerned with the study of drug or medication action, where a drug can be broadly or narrowly defined as any man-made, natural, or endogenous (from within the body) molecule which exerts a biochemical or physiological effect on the cell, tissue, organ, or organism (sometimes the word pharmacon is used as a term to encompass these endogenous and exogenous bioactive species). More specifically, it is the study of the interactions that occur between a living organism and chemicals that affect normal or abnormal biochemical function. If substances have medicinal properties, they are considered pharmaceuticals. The field encompasses drug composition and properties, synthesis and drug design, molecular and cellular mechanisms, organ/systems mechanisms, signal transduction/cellular communication, molecular diagnostics, interactions, chemical biology, therapy, and medical applications and antipathogenic capabilities.
