The name "boccia" is derived from the Latin word for "boss" – '.History of Bocce The sport is contested at local, national and international levels, by athletes with severe physical disabilities. It was originally designed to be played by people with cerebral palsy but now includes athletes with other severe disabilities affecting motor skills.

Above the village, with views across the sea to the Isle of Arran and the Argyll hills, is the Port Bannatyne golf-course. Built in 1912, the course now has 13 holes and wild deer grazing the herbage. The village has strong links overseas and has its own club for the French game of Pétanque, with a pitch, or piste, on the seafront. In 2005, work was started on the new yacht marina.

The Champ de Mars Racecourse in Port Louis Sports are popular among the inhabitants of Port Louis, as in the rest of Mauritius. Over 35 sports federations are organized under the aegis of the Mauritius Sports Council. Popular activities include football, volleyball, a range of martial arts (Karate, Taekwon Do, Wushu), table tennis, badminton, and pétanque, which is a form of boules. The Mauritius National Olympic committee is also based in Port Louis.

The game was extremely popular in France in the second half of the 19th century (the first official club was established in France in 1854). It was played informally in villages all over Provence, usually on squares of land in the shade of plane trees. Chinese Taipei competed in the 2016 Asian Beach Games in Danang, Vietnam from September 24 to October 5, 2016. The delegation was bannered by 53 athletes in 10 sports including 3x3 basketball, beach handball, beach kurash, beach volleyball, beach woodball, beach wrestling, ju-jitsu, muay thai, pétanque, and vovinam. Lee Wan-ting, gold medallist in 2014, won the gold medal again in the women’s -57 kg division contest for beach kurash. Hsiao Chia-hung and Wang Wan-yi won the Men's Doubles Fairway for beach woodball.

Boules games have a very long history, dating back through the Middle Ages to ancient Rome, and before that to ancient Greece and Egypt. In France in the second half of the 19th century a form of boules known as jeu provençal (or boule lyonnaise) was extremely popular. In this form of the game players rolled their boules or ran three steps before throwing a boule. Pétanque originally developed as an offshoot or variant of jeu provençal in 1910, in what is now called the Jules Lenoir Boulodrome in the town of La Ciotat near Marseilles.

A "playing area" (aire de jeu) is an area containing one or more terrains. For tournaments, a large playing area is subdivided and marked off (typically using nails and string) into rectangular marked terrains (also known as "lanes" (cadres) or "pistes") so that multiple games may be carried on simultaneously. For tournament play, a marked terrain is a rectangle at least wide and long. In the United States, proponents of pétanque such as author Byron Putman often urge the use of non-dedicated public terrains--public walking paths, playground areas, dirt/gravel parking lots, and baseball infields - as terrains.

The Sports and Recreation Ground caters for several sports, including cricket, football, squash and pétanque, and is home to the Ickleford Cricket Club, whose symbol represents two crossed farmers pitchforks. The club was founded in 1947 and in 2006 won promotion to Division 3 of the Saracens Herts League, and was promoted to Division 2 in 2010.

In the City of Halifax (Nova Scotia, Canada), a city with a limited Dutch heritage, kermesses have been held since 1907 as fundraisers for the local children's hospital. The École Française de Vancouver (ÉFIV) in North Vancouver, British Columbia (Canada), holds an annual kermesse with games, food, a pétanque tournament and community participation. In February 2016, complaints were laid with the Judicial Conduct Commission over photographs on the Club's website of a District Court judge playing pétanque in the nude. Though the judge's name was never published, the case drew national attention, with negative commentary from former government minister Rodney Hide and the Sensible Sentencing Trust, and support from TV host and fellow naturist Paul Henry. The Judicial Conduct Commissioner does not report on the outcomes of individual complaints made against judges, and no further action was made public with regard to the case. The park extends from the Santa Monica Pier at the south to Adelaide Drive at the north. Boċċi is the Maltese version of the Italian game of bocce, French pétanque and British bowls. Other than certain differences in rules and the ground on which the game is played, one of the most obvious differences between Maltese boċċi and foreign equivalents is the shape of the bowls themselves which tend to be cylindrical rather than spherical in shape. Many small clubs (usually called Klabbs tal-Boċċi in Maltese) can be found in Maltese and Gozitan localities, and are usually well-frequented and are quite active on a local and European level. Even the emigrants to Canada, Australia, and The United States have taken the game with them and now forms an important part of their social scene.

The village has many provisions for sport, with two large playing fields, used for men's football, at the north end of the village, a small children's play area, a tennis court, a pétanque area, a cricket pitch with pavilion and car park, and links to numerous countryside paths, such as the Jurassic Way. In the middle of the village there is a bowls lawn. West Haddon has many active sports clubs, such as the tennis club, 3 senior football teams, several youth football teams, a cricket team, a bowls club a petanque club and a table tennis club. West Haddon Bowls Club is known as a friendly village club with members of all ages and experience and abilities.

Stade Clermontois Basket Féminin, formerly known as Stade Clermontois Auvergne Basket 63 is a French women's basketball club from Clermont-Ferrand created in 1938, currently playing in 6th tier Regionale Féminine 2.Statistics in the French Basketball Association's website It is the women's basketball section of Stace Clermontois, a sports club also featuring archery, athletics, boxing, canne de combat, fencing, gymnastics, handball, jeu provençal, judo, karate, pétanque, rugby union, savate, swimming, table tennis, tennis, weightlifting, volleyball and wrestling sections. Stade Clermontois became Clermont's main women's basketball team after Clermont UC's disappearance in 1985. It won the national cup in 1989,List of finals in the French Basketball Federation's press dossier for the 2009 edition.

Lawn Bowls is a precision sport where the goal is to roll slightly radially asymmetrical balls (called bowls) closer to a smaller white ball (the "jack" or "kitty") than one's opponent is able to do. It is related to bocce and pétanque. The game is usually played on a large, rectangular, precisely levelled and manicured grass or synthetic surface known as a bowling green, but an indoor variation on carpet is also played. In the simplest competition, singles, one of the two opponents begins a segment of the competition (in bowling parlance, an "end"), by placing the mat and rolling the jack to the other end of the green as a target.

The playing fields of Mies include a full size football field, basketball pitch, boules (pétanque), running track, tennis courts, and children's playground with swings, climbing frames and other children's games. The clubhouse has showers and toilets, as well as a snack bar, but these facilities are generally only open when football matches are being played on the sports field. There is a polo field, Polo de Veytay, where several polo matches are played every year, such as the Geneva Polo Masters. This is part of the large agricultural and forest area known as Domaine de Veytay, in the North-West of the commune and which takes up about 40% of the area of the commune or some 150 hectares.

A period of decline in the late 20th century spurred the creation of the Prospect Park Alliance, which refurbished many parts of the park starting in the late 1980s. Main attractions of the park include the Long Meadow; the Picnic House; Litchfield Villa; Prospect Park Zoo; the Boathouse; Concert Grove; Brooklyn's only lake, covering ; and the Prospect Park Bandshell that hosts free outdoor concerts in the summertime. The park also has sports facilities, including the Prospect Park Tennis Center, basketball courts, baseball fields, soccer fields, and the New York Pétanque Club in the Parade Ground. There is also a private Society of Friends (Quaker) cemetery on Quaker Hill near the ball fields.

The annual Eastlake Shake fair (renamed Lake Fest in 2006) is held in a closed-off section of Franklin Avenue E. between E. Roanoke and E. Louisa Streets on the playground of the TOPS@Seward public school. The fair features live music, local vendors, and—a neighborhood favorite—the Eastlake Shake Pet Parade. In 2006 a group of Eastlake residents and friends transformed the E. Louisa street end on Lake Union into a park whose focus is a pétanque court called the Eastlake Boulledrome. Built from granite curbs recycled from Pioneer Square and pitching mound material from Safeco Field, it is now the "home field" for the Independent Petanque Club of Eastlake.

Apart from participation in the above games, the following Vanuatu sports have participated in their respective world championships either at continental or international levels or both: Archery, Athletics, Basketball, Boxing, Cricket, Football, Handball, Judo, Karate, Netball, Pétanque, Rugby Union, Table- Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Volleyball (Beach Volleyball) and Weightlifting. In 1989 during the PGC meeting in Tonga, Vanuatu was awarded the right to host the 1993 Pacific Mini-Games. The National Sports Council Act was drafted that year but approved in Parliament on 17 April 1990 paving the way for the establishment of the VNSC mainly to manage the sports facilities built for these Games and other government-owned sporting facilities in the future. The Minister of Sports appoints all the Council members.

This pin shape suggests that it may have been the origin of the modern bottom-heavy design of bowling pins and similar skittles of various sizes used in a wide variety of games. A conical king or jack, or sometimes a spherical jack or , as used in modern bowls, boules, bocce, and pétanque, has been employed in lawn-bowling games since at least as early as the 13th century in England; all these games have the same basic objective, to get as close to the jack as possible with one's own ball. Conical king pins are found in depictions and actual surviving game equipment (of carved stone) from Ancient Egypt. Later equipment was typically made of wood, sometimes also with clay, bone, or ivory pieces.

The new park is site of the relocated Bagley Memorial Fountain which previously occupied a spot on Campus Martius. In January 2008, the city of Detroit announced plans for a new Cadillac Centre, a $150 million mixed-use residential entertainment-retail complex attached to the Cadillac Tower. Designed by architect Anthony Caradonna and patterned after the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the contemporary steel and glass 24-story skyscraper complex to be located on Campus Martius Park, was planned to begin construction in the fall of 2009, but was indefinitely postponed by the city in October of that year when the developers failed to meet key agreements with the city. The French sport of pétanque is played at Cadillac Square each workday from noon to 1 p.m.

When a small group of Taupō residents called for public signage banning G-strings at the local Spa Thermal Park in early 2020, the strength of opposition to their proposal made national news. In February 2016, complaints were laid with the Judicial Conduct Commission over photographs of a District Court judge playing pétanque in the nude at Pineglades Naturist Club. Though the judge's name was never published, the case drew national attention, with negative commentary from former government minister Rodney Hide and the Sensible Sentencing Trust, and support from TV host and self-declared nudist Paul Henry. The Judicial Conduct Commissioner does not report on the outcomes of individual complaints made against judges, and no further action was made public with regard to the case.

A 1925 advertisement for a hotel in Bournemouth, England offers "Croquet, Clock Golf, Billiards, etc." while in 2016 a hotel in Scarborough, England says that "the children's play area, clock golf and putting green, provide plenty of fun activities for children of all ages" and at one in Silkeborg, Denmark, "You can also avail yourself of clock golf or the pétanque court." English Novelist E. F. Benson makes reference to clock golf in Chapter 8 of his novel Lucia in London (1927) in the Mapp and Lucia series. Daisy and Robert Quantock are playing the game on their lawn. British Novelist P.G. Wodehouse makes reference to country house lodgers playing clock golf in Summer Moonshine (1937). Agatha Christie's novel 4:50 from Paddington (1957) also features a (rusty) clock golf.

Pétanque, a form of boules, is a popular sport played in towns and villages all over Provence. A more athletic version of the sport called jeu provençal was popular throughout Provence in the 19th century – this version is featured in the novels and memoires of Marcel Pagnol; players ran three steps before throwing the ball, and it resembled at times a form of ballet. The modern version of the game was created in 1907 at the town of La Ciotat by a former champion of jeu provençal named Jules Hugues, who was unable to play because of his rheumatism. He devised a new set of rules where the field was much smaller, and players did not run before throwing the ball, but remained inside a small circle with their feet together.

The bourg (original walled community) was accepted as a member of the prestigious (entirely non- governmental) organisation Les Plus Beaux Villages de France and restaurants and artisans returned to service the needs of a growing flow of tourists – estimated in 2016 at about 100,000 visitors. The original village (of barely 30 permanent, year-round, residents now) has to endure all the inconvenience – as well as some benefits – of this mass inflow. Many events are organised with the tourist visitor in mind – a weekly marché nocturne (an open-air meal, with entertainment, bought from an array of stalls cooking a wide variety of food) during the summer, in the Place du Port down alongside the river; art exhibitions in the Chateau Parc; a small weekly market; an immense Pottery Fair, one of the largest in France; a similarly large antique and bric'a'brac fair; to join the regular artisans – a glassblower, a potter, and a micro- brewery ('brasserie') – as well as local canoeing, horseriding, football, and pétanque.
